Jane Wagner Gives Kudos to Her Favorite Comediennes

Jane Wagner
Lucille: What can you say but OMG! Simply one of the greats. Her style of broad, beautifully timed and executed comedy has released more endorphins than all the OxyContin, feel-good meds and morphine pumps in the world.

Ellen DeGeneres is a true original. She is just brilliantly funny from stand-up to talk-show host to whatever she does. And so loveable! Her sitcoms were funny and innovative. She has a witty, high-comedy style that blends seamlessly with her own persona — this is, I think, what gives her unusual magnetism. She is so real and wise as she brings us her sly insights into this absurd and foolish world of ours.

Chelsea Handler is someone I’ve heard about. I know Chelsea has a show on VH1 and I’m going to catch up with her right away.

But I must add kudos to some of my other favorites:

Phyllis Diller — brilliant, bizarre, hysterically funny jokes. She laid down the trail for the hilarious, outspoken Roseanne.

Joan Rivers — Some of the best, flat-out, funniest lines in the history of one-liners.

Whoopi — I love this brilliant actress and comic.

I think Joy Behar is wonderfully funny on "The View." I love her quick wit and intelligence when she hosts the "Larry King" show.

I feel I’ve left someone out — one of my absolute favorites — gee whiz, what IS her name?

I KNOW WHO IT IS! I KNOW I KNOW! It’s Mary Jean…no…Lilith..wait, no…Lillian Tomlinson or something…?

No but seriously. Whoopi and Lil are my goddesses. I almost had a coronary when I discovered this site because they were BOTH bloggers here.  And you, Jane, are the icing on the cake. (Miss you and everyone else, by the way!)

You know what I love the most about Lilly, Whoopi & Jane?  Not only do they make me laugh, they also make me think.  I like smart women & these are some of the smartest around.

My son is turning 15 this week & I have told him "I will love whoever you choose - but for God’s sake pick a girl with a brain & a sense of humor."  I’m not too worried, since all of his friends are a HOOT

Wanda Sykes is the funniest in stand-up and TV. And Kathy Griffith is pretty funny, too.

Gracie Allen.  Ruth Draper.  Moms Mabley.  Minnie Pearl.  Gilda Radner.  Fanny Brice.  Lily Tomlin.  The great ones.

I left out Gertrude Berg, but only because I think of her as a writer more.  It was she, not Lucille Ball, who invented the sitcom.  In 1929.

If you can find "Yoo-hoo, Mrs. Goldberg," the documentary showing around about Gertrude Berg, GO!!!!

Adding to the aforementioned: Carol Burnett is an unparalleled genius at physical comedy. The late Madeleine Kahn’s inimitable style made me laugh so much.

Lily Tomlin (may she live at least as long as her Uncle from Kentucky!) is in a class unto herself. ♥ ♥ ♥

Yes, and of course in the Carol Burnett school there is the immortal Imogene Coca.

Lucille Ball is of course my all time favorite. Mentioning, Carol Burnett, makes me think about all the crew from her show - Vicki Lawrence, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman. There are so many great ones, and don’t forget the male comediennes - Steve Martin, Richard Pryer, Robin Williams, I could keep going…..

Dear Ms. Jane,

First, by re-runs I love Imogene Coca, Gracie Allen, Carol Burnett as Scarlett, and who doesn’t love Lucy, especially when she and Ethel were candy makers.  For more current comediennes, to remind you, I love Lily, as well as Whoopie, Ellen, Tina Fey, and, of course, you, My Dear Ms. Jane, for your humorous creativity!

Love, DtN

PS  When are you going to open the sand box!

Hi Jane & everyone, I like all the ladies that were mentioned here already  (including the one that Jane for some reason can’t remember her name…. "good one J" very witty! :p) but here is a few other ladies that I really admire a lot and they would be Janeane Garofalo and Gilda Radner. However, the list goes on and on. Thanks for your posts. -Shey
