Japanese Engineers Unveil 'Fashion Robot' (Video)

Models may soon be outdated!
A Japanese government program this weekend revealed a so-called "fashion robot" that’s made to strut her stuff on the catwalk, complete with smile and perky chest. And, more than that, she loves the press. "Hello everybody, I am cybernetic human HRP-4C," said the robot during her unveiling.
Though some people may fear such a human-looking creation, officials at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology insist familiar features can help comfort levels. "It’s important that people feel good about humanoids and want to work with them," said researcher Shuji Kajita. "We shifted from a dry mechanical image to a very human image."
Kajita and his team could have made the model more human looking, but decided that would be too eerie, according to South Africa’s Independent: "If we had made the robot too similar to a real human, it would have been uncanny. We have deliberately leaned toward an anime style."
This is only the latest "humanoid" technology to come out of Japan: Engineers last week showed off a robot teacher who grimaces at naughty children.
Now, we don’t want to rain on the technological parade, but didn’t anyone see "Terminator"? Robots can turn on us. And, it seems, make us even more body conscious. Great.
Here’s video of HRP-4C showing off her moves:

I was listening to a radio talk show on robots once, and after polling many women, most said they’d prefer a male robot to a real male. Says a lot, doesn’t it?
