JFK Jr.'s 'Thank You' to Julia Reed

Julia Reed

I met John Kennedy only once, when he was in the planning stages of George. I was doing almost all of Vogue’s political coverage in those days and he called to see if I were interested in jumping the fence. I told him no, but that I’d be happy to come talk to him about what they were trying to do. We met for about two and a half hours over Diet Cokes in the conference room at George’s bare-bones offices. He was so enthusiastic and engaged and thoroughly charming of course. And so modest — he was the novice eager to learn and I was the so-called "expert." He really wanted to make George work and took it very seriously. Afterward, I got the nicest thank-you note I have ever received in my life, and I am not exaggerating. It was gracious and sweet and funny. His mother would have been proud. The last time I came across it, it made me cry.

He was raised well and understood how important it was to acknowledge appreciation of a gift — and that’s what you gave him — and more than likely, you would have gone out of your way for him another time because of the truly nice note you received from him and not because of his last name.  That small gesture was the genesis of what might have become a friendship of sorts.  More young people should be taught how imortant and valuable a thank you note is.

And while they’re at it, they should learn about the words, please, thank-you, and excuse me.

Judy,

Even the clerks in the stores seem to act like my buying something is a huge interruption of their time.  PET - I’ll remember that acronym.

How sweet. I remember thinking that I was so glad his mother wasn’t still alive at the time he died. The woman had enough death and tragedy in her life.
