Joan Ganz Cooney's Drinking Journey

Joan Ganz Cooney
I haven’t had a cocktail in years. I used to love Manhattans and went through a martini phase (which passed quickly when I caught myself slurring words). But years ago, white wine became my drink of choice and I enjoy it (and sometimes red) on any and all evening occasions (I can’t drink at lunch anymore, either).

I’m more into red wine, now but in ages past the Golden Cadillac was my favorite which we ladies use to lunch with…I can’t do that anymore either.

I drink Milk, Ice Tea, Hot Tea, and lots and lots of Pepsi.  Being an Adult child of Acholoic I stay away from the stuff.  I got a look at what my childrens lives would be like when I was a child, and at 18 when it legal for me to dirnk, I did and I didn’t like what I saw.  An angry mean person lashing out at anyone, but only when I was drunk.  I quit the day I found out I was pregnant with my first child.

Since that day I’ve only had a drink or two over the last 27 years, I was lucky,  I could have become my Mother or older sister.

But if anyone else wants to drink that’s not my say so, but not in my home. And if someone gets drunk while were out spending time together, anyone, I will drive them home, But if they get sick because of drinking don’t look to me for help of any kind.  I draw the line.

Sorry if this isn’t what this question is about, but it just struck a cord with me. I’ve seen so many people lose what they’ve worked hard for because of booze. Their homes, families, respect of their children, and when there so bad and no one will buy it for them because they refuse to contribute to their disease, the one who stands their ground becomes the bad guy.  I speak from experience. The day before my mother died she refused to eat anything, but when asked if she wanted a beer her eyes got as big as the moon,  she passed away the next day.

So for me it will be Pepsi, or Tea, and a glass of milk with every meal :)

Deniseann, I hate to cast dispersions on your favorite drink, Pepsi, but please read up on what soft drinks like Coke and Pepsi can do to you liver among other organs.  I make sun tea all summer long and drink soft drinks only on rare occasions when I go out.  I can’t give you a precise web site about the damage caused by the soft drinks because it’s been a couple of weeks since I read about it.  You can google it asking "Is it dangerous to drink Pepsi and Coca Cola?"

As for alcohol - I limit my drinking to two Tom Collins drinks a year when I go to the Fireside Theatre in Ft. Atkinson for dinner and a play.  Half a glass of a mixed drink makes my arms tingle - by the time it reaches my head I just want to curl up and go to sleep.  Never did like the taste of beer and alcohol.  I admire you for what you’ve survived and risen above.

Pdr de, I will look into it, I think I went to Pepsi when I was young because It was forbidden in our home, if he stepfather and my Mom weren’t drinking booze, he was drinking Pop of all kinds and we weren’t allowed to have any.  He got buttter were go margine, he got steak we got hot dogs, he got new cloths we got used.

when I was on my own and making my own decisions (18) I ate and did what I wanted, it was 1974, my father had pepsi in the house 24/7 and I was never forbidden from drinking it.

When my dad got sober in the 60’s he went from beer to pepsi and I think that’s kind of the reason I started drinking only pepsi, and i find if i go a day or two with out one I get the gitters, the cafeeine, but I don’t drink coffee except when I go out to dinner (and thats far and few inbetween), I love Ice tea, last yr I got an Ice tea maker for mothers day, and my son works for a company (Tevana) and every gift from him has something to do with tea, which is good by me.

Thank you for the information and I will look into it today. :)
