Oscar-Winning Composer Joseph Brooks Accused of Raping Aspiring Starlets
In a plot that seems straight out of "Law & Order," an Academy Award-winning composer is on the receiving end of 82 counts of sex-related charges — including rape — after allegedly luring young, aspiring actresses into his apartment. Joseph Brooks, who wrote the famous love song "You Light Up My Life," turned himself in on Tuesday, pleaded not guilty and was released on $500,000 bail. Police believe Brooks posted ads on Craigslist and other talent websites that promised to turn young women into stars.
According to reports, from 2005 to 2008 Brooks was assaulting women. Authorities believe that the 71-year-old songwriter had the help of one Shawni Lucier. Police say Brooks targeted women mostly in Washington state and Oregon with the help of Lucier, who is based in Seattle. Together, they arranged young women’s flights to Brook’s place in New York. Once the young women arrived, Brooks allegedly would tell them that they were auditioning for a role as a prostitute and were to drink a lot of wine, said District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. "He may very well have drugged them," said Lisa Friel, chief of the DA’s Sex Crimes Unit.
His victims reportedly include Loretta Spruel, a former "American Idol" contestant.

Women show up up an horny old geezer’s apartment and were told to drink lots of wine? Well, that says something about common sense and intelligence on their part.
82 counts? If he did drug and rape them , the DA should move fast and park his old butt in prison.
I hope they throw the book at him and his assitant. There is a related psot at http://iamsoannoyed.com/?p=1928
From above, "Brooks, who is 71 lured the women to his apartment with the aide of his personal assistant, Shawni Lucier. Lucier apparently played a willing role in contacting the women, interviewing them and even assuring some of some and their mothers that these were legitimate auditions."
Lucier and Brooks should get the full sentences allowed by law. They knew exactly what perversions lay in wait for these young women.
What the heck is up with Craigslist? I refuse to go on that site to look for work. I think it should be boycotted until it cleans up its act. Murders, rape—is this not enough to go after a website?
Kermie,
A little suggestion? Rather than hunt through any ads, take a more proactive approach and make a list of the top 5 companies you want to work for. Learn everything you can about them. Try to envision what YOU can do to make them soar. Then find a friend with a friend who knows someone in the company and get on the phone and get an appointment. For people who really know what they want and have the skills and experience, companies are apt to create jobs for such talent. It might be a little harder in this economy, but……
Its not that I’m confused, its just that where is the common sense in these women? If it sounds alitle fuzzy then dont go though with it, or if its too good to be true aspect.
Also drinking wine at an audition? Doesn’t that sound odd?
What has the world come to.
It does sound odd. And I’m guessing that, in retrospect, a red flag probably did go up in the mind of each one of these ladies. But then they probably reasoned that an Academy Award winning composer with a female assistant would not be a danger. I am a firm believer in trusting one’s instincts. That’s the lesson here, along with never going anywhere like this alone.
kermie b is right about Craigslist, too.
Lastly, I agree with Norma Grooms that this guy should have been punished long ago for writing that song. But that’s another issue…
What sounds odd to me is that anyone would believe that a composer would be auditioning actresses.
Now that you get me to look more closely, composers and songwriters are not quite the same thing. According to Wikipedia, he “is a Jewish-American screenwriter, director, producer and composer.” While composers would not be involved in casting, he could get involved as a director or producer - information left out of this article. Looks like that particular oddness came from the way the article was written. You’re right, Deena, he does have the credentials to lure the unwary.
Someone without an agent being flown across the country should have been a big red flag.
A private audition (especially in an apartment) should have been a big red flag.
Being asked to drink real alcohol during an audition should have been a big red flag.
Are these women too young to remember the so-called “casting couch”??
