Judith Martin: 'It's Raining – The Government Is a Thief'

Judith Martin
Of course everything is the fault of The Media. It’s our version of the Italian saying, "It’s raining — the government is a thief." But what is wrong with making clear that the situation is so serious that everyone should sober up financially?

What’s happening financially is not the media’s fault…but the media has relinquished its duty to reporting the facts!  What has happened to the MSM and its obvious deflection towards entertainment news and totally supporting the agebda of the right is deplorable and very, very sad!

Once upon a time the media, in order to use the public airwaves, was required to set aside time to report the news. When those requirements were removed, the media absorbed the news into the rest of their for-profit programming and REAL news disappeared.

Why is it that the media did not report what was happening before the bubble burst… but once it burst suddenly it can’t shut up. I’m with Jon Stewart on this.

This isn’t a media thing it is one of personal responsibility. Over the past fifteen or so years I saw many people buy homes beyond their means. Subdivisions popped up with huge homes on tiny lots that seem to fill almost immediately. A portion of the people living in these places had interest only loans with no payment going towards the principal because they hoped to flip the houses. Others had ARM loans they couldn’t afford once the interest raised.

Other people charged their credit cards to the limit then consolidated with another card to start the cycle again. Where was the personal responsibility in all this? What is wrong with buying a home you can actually afford even if one person loses their job? Why are so many people ashamed to say, “I can’t afford it,” rather than reaching for the plastic?

I certainly realize that many of the people affected by the economy today did everything right. However, I don’t think we should prop up the financially irresponsible or blame it on the media.

The major media outlets are too invested as part of the status quo to really do a good reporting job. Try listening to Amy Goodman on Democracy Now and Bill Moyers on PBS.  They frequently take the time to dig beneath the surface of these hard stories and ferret out what the major media outlets aren’t/can’t/don’t have time to tell us.  Commercial TV/radio has an obligation to shareholders—I get that. But they get the airwaves for free; where is the obligation to the ones they serve—and not just the ones they give dividends to?

More like Congress and those behind those DOORS are the true ones to blame.  Don’t you love how they stick on other issues on to one important one just to weigh it down?  Kind of like the type of person you want to bring home and introduce to Mom, eh?
