Judith Martin: 'Leadership Was Not for Me'

Judith Martin
The only leadership job I’ve ever had was as head copy girl in the women’s section of The Washington Post. I believed and sympathized with every  personal problem my little staff told me, as a result of which I had to do all the work myself. The lesson I learned was that leadership was not for me.

I love this, as I am starting to feel this in my life.  I love the "doing" part.  I’m somewhat in a leadership position at this time - working with a friend’s new company, being responsible for budgets and the doling out of people’s hours.  I’d rather just do it all myself to make sure it gets done, and it saves us from hiring contractors.  Not that this is beginning to make sense to anyone.  I think my point is:  I love that it’s ok to say "leadership is not for me."  Thanks Judith.

We are fed the idea that if you are not a leader, you are not successful.  How wonderful it is to see a successful woman state that leadership is not for her.  I hope our sisters and daughters read or learn this as it is such an invaluable lesson.
