Let us hope that each of our daughters would answer this question as we would wish.

I believe Judith Martin may be stating our hope would be that our daughters will say we, as mothers, had the biggest impact in their (our daughters) lives.

As a parent, I always hoped I had an impacted on my children’s lives. I had the blessing of having this affirmed on Mother’s Day just this year. My daughter gave me a gift which is inscribed with "The greatest compliment anyone could give me would be, You are just like your Mother."  This would tell me I had an impact on my daughter’s life and I still do.

That was the first place my mind went; right to my mother!

Behind my wife and my mother, I think the answer to this question for me is Judith Martin. I relish every word Miss Manners writes.
