Julia Reed: Laughter and 'Life on Mars'

Julia Reed
Everything makes me laugh — thank God — but one thing that has been making me pretty consistently happy is my new absolute favorite TV show, "Life on Mars," set in 1973 New York City, complete with the fabulous Harvey Keitel in while slip-on shoes. It is so well written, well shot and well acted (Gretchen Mol is wondrous), and the soundtrack is out of sight. Every week it makes me laugh — and cry — and I can’t wait for the next installment.

okay, okay, julia. uncle! unlike most people who say they rarely watch tv, I truly don’t. (not counting the hot thing I’ve got for Jon Hamm of Mad Men, of course) but now YOUVE mentioned "life on mars" twice, so I suppose i must watch. there goes an hour of my time every week. thanks.

My TV recorder is now set for Life on Mars every Wednesday at 9 Central. No doubt I’ll be falling off the sofa laughing with you, Julia. But I won’t like it more than Mad Men. My relationship with Don Draper is deep and true.

LIFE ON MARS: I was beginning to think I was the only one. No one I know is hooked. We must get everyone to drink the koolaid.

I am crazy about it. MAGIC. So good to see the 70s with a 2009 commentary. The last episode with The Weathermen/terrorist storyline was fantastic. What will the 90s and 2000s look like with 30 or 40 years gone by?

I have been a fan of "Life on Mars" from the beginning, and I am glad to see I am not alone in enjoying it.<!—break—> I second everything Julia said, and add a thank-you to Whoopi for making a great appearance. Some parts are very familiar, and some are still alien to me. Never been to NYC, for one.

I do love to see characters grow over time, especially the women.

Looks like “Life on Mars” has been canceled. 8-( From what I have read, they will make unaired episodes available online - so we will not be left hanging too much.
