'Julie & Julia' Takes the Cake (Video)

My favorite movie of the summer premiered last night in NYC … and our own wOw woman and scene stealer Joan Juliet Buck was there

The summer hit that opens next week will be – drumroll with wooden spoons – "Julie & Julia." The hilarious and charming film, based on two bestselling books that intertwine the culinary lives of Julia Child and Julie Powell, a contemporary woman blogger, stars Meryl Streep (as Julia), Amy Adams (as Julie),  Stanley Tucci (as Julia’s husband, Paul Child) and Chris Messina (as Julie’s husband).

They were all at the premiere last night at NYC’s Ziegfeld Theatre, hosted by Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman of Sony, who introduced the amazing "writer, director and ‘chef,’" Nora Ephron. (Sir Howard:  Nora Ephron is to New York what butter is to sole meuniere.)

Meryl Streep will no doubt win an Academy Award for channeling Julia Child into the wOw woman she really was. But the highlight of the evening (AND, may I add, the movie) was our own wOw woman, Joan Juliet Buck.  While she may have had a small role … it was indelible. As head of Le Cordon Bleu, the French culinary school, and Julia’s mean-spirited (i.e., bitchy) nemesis, Joan turned a small egg white of a role into a magnificent soufflé!

Here’s the trailer … and here, too, is a little part of a Conversation Joan gave us (with Mary Lawrence, myself and Margo Howard), telling of the making of the movie and what it is like to work with Meryl Streep.

I’m taking my brother he’s a Professional Chef/Writer/Artist. I enjoy hearing him talk about food! … He truly is the best ! … We’re going to have a ball! … We’re dressing for the occasion. It demands It!

This should be fun to see, but I’ll go without my husband who does not like Meryl Streep (no accounting for taste!) and does not have a clue about who Julia Child is. Being from Dublin not only did he miss out on Julia Child, he also missed out on Dan Aykroyd’s Julia Child!

As the "social director" for my friends I am planning a get together movie/lunch or dinner to view Julie & Julia hopefully channelling our own inner Julia Child.

Meryl Streep is long overdue for her second best actress Oscar (her first Oscar was for supporting). It’s been 26 years. Of course, Katherine Hepburn took 34 years before she got her 2nd Oscar, the very next year, she got her 3rd and her 4th Oscar was 13 years after her 4th. I guess that’s what it takes.

I was fortunate enough to have a friend with preview tickets in our city and we saw it Wednesday.  The movie is wonderful.  I love Julia!  I love Julie!  I love food!
