Interrogating Kate Gosselin and Rush Limbaugh (Video)

Mr. wOw weighs in on interrogators Natalie Morales vs. Chris Wallace.

YouTube
Mr. wOw watched two interviews earlier this week. One was yet another sit-down on Fox News with Rush Limbaugh. His "interrogator" was Chris Wallace.

The other was Kate Gosselin’s TLC confessional – her Princess Diana moment, replete with tears and appropriate lighting. (Diana chose to allow some harshness, emphasizing her ravaged-victim-deer-in-the-headlights pose. Kate was softly lit, offsetting her bitch-on-wheels persona.)

The Limbaugh session was typical Fox softball. Chris Wallace was practically licking Limbaugh’s shoes. It was really just an excuse for Rush to vent on Obama – the president is trying to destroy the economy, "on purpose … he is a ‘man child,’ etc." Through it, Wallace ducked his head, smiled and all but blushed, as Limbaugh swelled with vitriol. Keith Olbermann (I’m not a big fan, but sometimes he is useful) did a moment-by-moment replay that is classic. It is probably on YouTube right now.

The whole thing was fascinating, like watching the malevolent aliens arrive in "V," and choose one clueless newsperson to become their PR outlet. (I’m thinking the fabulous ’80s miniseries "V," not the bland, plotless travesty that is currently airing on ABC.)

Oh, and beyond anything Rush said, there was the sight of his bare ankles. Mr. wOw does not want to see any of Mr. Limbaugh’s flesh. Wear socks, and a tie. (That fleshy neck is no treat.) Look, it’s OK for FOX to be conservative. I don’t mind that. Just say it, and quit the "fair and balanced" routine.

Mrs. Gosselin, the infamous, driving ego of "Jon & Kate Plus 8," was interviewed by Natalie Morales. And I must say, Ms. Morales did not give much quarter to Kate. This was a relentless hour. Natalie was hard-eyed and not afraid to put Kate on the spot, over and over, in matters of exploiting her fecundity, the resulting brood and her own desire to be more than what she is – a woman with a crazy asymmetrical hairdo and an angry, insecure, fat, loser hubby. Morales even pulled out one of the worst tabloid cover stories on Kate and demanded to know how Kate felt about being called a "monster." And right to the end of this interview, Morales kept asking, essentially – why not just quit showbiz and move ahead as a normal divorcee?

Guess what? Mrs. Gosselin went head-to-head. I was impressed with her composure, her obvious restraint in lacing into Jon, her well-thought-out replies. Although Kate has yet to explain, as far as I know, why exactly she signed on for a reality show after she learned she was carrying sextuplets (unless this is just ordinary 21st-century pathology?), she impressively explained that the genie was out of the bottle; no matter what she did, she’d now be followed everywhere, every decision overanalyzed by the tabs.

That she feels she was made for the limelight is obvious. And as for quitting public life: "What can I do, go back to being a nurse? That wouldn’t support the children." She is addicted to the attention now, but she is being commonsensical stating that she’s in it, up to her neck, no turning back, and her basking in the glow will provide for the future of her children.

It was fascinating. Not so much Kate, and certainly not the shadow of her unfortunate soon-to-be-ex, but the quality of this interview. I haven’t seen such a sizzling grill in quite a while. If Natalie Morales can bring this aggressive stance to the idiocy that is Jon and Kate, I’d like to see her bounce it off … any politician. I rarely observe these guys and gals on either side of the fence have their feet put to the fire. The intelligent follow-up question, the determination to get a straight answer seems long gone.

Ms. Morales works for NBC. She replaces Meredith Vieira during the third hour of the "Today Show" and fills in for Ann Curry sometimes as an anchor. I have never noticed her before. Now she is on Mr.wOw’s radar!

In early shows , seeing how John needed Kate to tell him what to do with the children, how can you blame her for yelling at him.  She had 6 BABIES to care for. Sometimes he acted like a child himself. You can’t be fooling around when you’ve got 8 kids to be fed all at one time. I think he got totally overwhelmed! They both did.  The money seemed like an easy decision to make. Then it went to their heads.  They both like the attention. She can right books to make money and he can get a real job and get off TV for good. Give the kids some normalcy.  Most kids don’t get to go on vacations, and live on acres.

Joy but what is normal?  To these kids their life was normal b/c they really didnt know any different…so now that the show is done and those bonds they made with their tv crew - what then?  How will the kids act?  I would like to know…Your normal is not their normal and its not my normal.  Personally having cameras following me would drive me crazy to turn around and see them there all the time but that is ME - not them.

You know, I don’t think a lot of us stop to think about the situation Jon and Kate are in. The vast amount of kids. I know, I come from a family of 11 children, all of which my father raised on his own (my mom died when I was 6). So when you have a lot of kids it is daunting, mind-blowing!

And once the kids are here, they’re here. You have to raise them the best way you can.  What I find so interesting about the Jon and Kate issue is the fact that it is a glimpse into how far and how much we have changed as a society. Because they chose to televise their life, WE know everything about them. We all debate, judge and talk about their lives everyday as if we know them intimately. If this was 20 years ago this wouldn’t be happening.

I find it fascinating and a bit disturbing that we have such detailed knowledge of others. Think about it guys, it was just last month we had a couple who told their children to lie, put on a hoax of their child in a flying balloon for God’s sake. All to gain notoriety to gain their own reality show. Truly fascinating how people think these days…..

Belinda…if it was 20, 30, 50 or a hundred years ago, we’d be talking and judging in some way.  Gossip and shallow opinionators such as Mr. Wow are nothing  new.  Also not new is the insatiable thirst of the public  (and the media) to build up, tear down and speak as if they "know all about" public figures.  It’s just more in your face 24/7, undeniably coarser, increasingly idiotic and without a shred of real entertainment value.

Reality TV is a blight, and that’s the kindest thing I can say about it, but in terms of public and media reaction, over-reaction and presumptions, it’s nothing new.

Oh I agree with you Mr. Wow, gossip and shallow opinions are nothing knew. People have been curious and nosey about others lives, especially as it relates to those we deem as "celebrities" since the beginning of time. But my point was we have never had the degree of intimate knowledge about celebrities as we do today.  I don’t know how old our Mr. Wow is, but it wasn’t that long ago that the studios and talent management controlled every thing we knew about celebrities. There was no TMZ and 24-7 paparazzi outside the homes of the famous and infamous.

Now people openly open up their homes, bedrooms and lives to us…Americans. We know everything about Jon & Kate, far more than I think we should.  I have a huge crush on George Clooney. Love the man. But I am hard pressed to find out any true intimate details of his life. He does a great job in protecting his privacy. Yet people like Jon and Kate literally make a buck off of showing us the inner workings of their family life and marriage. I just think that is odd.

And I agree with you about Reality TV being a blight, most of it. The problem is it is so hard to determine what is reality tv? I like Kathy Griffin’s show, My life on the D list. I consider that quasi-reality. Some is scripted some is not.  I also like Hell’s Kitchen. Some is scripted and some is not. The line between what passes as real reality is so blurred these days.

But that’s my two cents on the subject. So much of what is happening in our world today is wonderful and progressive, but it is weighed also by alot that is happening that I feel uneasy about. But I have no choice, I must move with the tide, not fight against it.

Have a great weekend. Can’t wait to see what you will brooch as topics for discussion next week.

Mr. Wow-   Natalie Morales is great.   Thanks for the spot light on her.  I must be the only one on the planet that never saw one episode of Kate & Jon.

Rush Limbaugh - You are right -I fear his audience.  He is a fear monger and what he is doing is dangerous much in the same way as Glenn Beck.  Most people think he is funny and that surely everyone knows he is an entertainer. I don’t believe it.

I’m a little late to this conversation, but I wonder: what would it have been like if Chris Wallace interviewed Kate Gosselin and Natalie Morales interviewed Rush Limbaugh? Chris Wallace wouldn’t have done much differently, but I daresay Ms. Morales would have put Wallace to shame at his poor interviewing skills while putting Limbaugh’s (bare) toes to the fire!

P.S. to Starry Nite: I also have never watched "Jon and Kate" even once!
