Kate Gosselin on 'Today Show' Defends Jon (Video)

Kate on Jon Gosselin’s alleged affair with Deanna Hummel: ‘I’m very hesitant to believe any of it.’

"Jon & Kate Plus 8" has a plus-one problem.

A 23-year-old named Deanna Hummel is at the center of a firestorm over allegations that she is the mistress of reality-show super-dad Jon Gosselin. Speaking on the "Today" show on Thursday, Kate Gosselin stood by her man — who US Weekly says has been carrying on a three-month-long romance with elementary schoolteacher Hummel.

"We just need to weather this storm, just like all the other storms that we’ve been through," Kate Gosselin told "Today’s" Meredith Vieira in New York. The tabloid attention and paparazzi have come as something of a surprise to her, she added:

It is so public. It’s one of the things we did not envision when we started our show. It’s one of the things that comes with it — the tabloid stuff. To be very honest, I’m very hesitant to believe any of it. It comes with the territory. We’re dealing with it just like everybody else does.

Gosselin also said she takes all the stories about her marriage with "a grain of salt" since "people are being paid to talk." In response to Gosselin’s claim, Us Weekly said on their website that no one was paid for the interviews.

Us Weekly published a story yesterday that gave details about the affair. Last week, Us also ran a story and photos showing Jon out with a "mystery" woman, while Kate was out promoting her new book, Eight Little Faces.

The magazine’s "most reliable source" is Hummel’s older brother, Jason, with whom she lives.

Deanna Hummel fired back at her brother in People magazine, saying, "My brother is making this all up. I can’t even stomach the lies he’s saying about me."

Kate was scheduled for "The Today Show" to talk about her new book, which came out April 19. Instead, the interview mostly focused on these recent allegations.

TLC issued this statement on behalf of Jon Gosselin, who was originally supposed to appear on the show with Kate but decided it was best to stay home with the eight children. The statement, which denied the allegations, read:

These allegations are false and just plain hurtful. As I adjust to the attention that comes from being in the public eye, I need to be more careful and aware of who I am associating with and where I am spending my time. But the bottom line is, I did not cheat on Kate … My family is my top priority.

The seventh season of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" airs May 25 on TLC, but don’t expect to watch Jon and Kate address the affair.

"We’re dealing with it privately," Gosselin told Vieria. "It’s kind of ironic to say that, because we do have a reality show. People see the good, the bad and the ugly. But there are those things that we keep to ourselves. And we’re working through it together, and that’s the important thing."

I’m sad to hear that Jon was caught in a comprising position.  I hope that he’s doing what he can to rectify the situation.

I know that having that many children is stressful.  During the few times that I’ve watched the show, it seems like she’s constantly talking to him as if he’s one of the kids.  She puts him down.  That can be very hard to take.

I have seen the show because I love watching the kids react to each other and play etc, and grow and develop language skills.  It is is a 24/7 merry-go-round ride in their home, and I think all of them do the best they can under the circumstances.  It is played so much I am sure they are making a bundle.

The irony is that Kate Gosselin, who is traveling around the country, publicizing her books and giving advice to parents, appears to spend very little time at home rearing her own eight children. Her "parental expertise" is reminiscent of Phyllis Schafly’s insistence that wives shouldn’t work outside the home when all the while she, too, was on the road and building her own career.

Maurine, I think she has also continued working as a nurse.  I was surprised that she was on tour and in meetings for the books, but they have to supply for 8 kids and get all of them through college.  The two older twins at the same time, and then the younger 6 at the same time.  I remember my father when he walked in the kitchen one morning and I asked him how he was, and he said, "I just realized I will have 4 kids in college next year…"  Then he got busy and sold some land off.

On the show, Kate is there quite a bit and is involved in everything.  They get some help, but not all the time.

Frannie - I don’t watch "reality TV" often but I have watched the Gosselin’s program off and on because I think the sextuplets are adorable, and one of my daughters lives near them and sees them occasionally. What you should know is that they are paid an enormous sum for their program, a sum which allowed them to purchase a million dollar (plus) home recently, and that all their trips, clothing for the children, toys etc. are provided for them in exchange for the marketing exposure received by the companies that supply them. Apparently, they also have several "nannies" that are rarely seen on TV. I don’t believe they have any financial problems, and, of course, do remember that they explicitly chose to have the sextuplets through fertility treatments. It just seems to me that a mother who constantly says "all we do is for the children" ought to be spending the greater part of her time with them instead of promoting the books she’s written about them. Methinks Kate doth protest too much.

EKA -

I have no idea who this woman is and no interest in whatever show she is doing. If she has 8 kids it is obvious she is doing it for the money to support them, so I don’t fault her for that, but I have no interest in it.

The only reality I am interested in is mine …. as warped as it is ;-)

From what I know of this couple, the husband really does not want to continue with the reality show while the wife does, most likely for the financial gain.  My advice for her is to take stock of the toll this show is doing to her marriage.  In my opinion, it doesn’t appear to be worth it.  Concentrate on your children and your marriage, the message is clear, your husband wants out of his ‘reality life’.

Once again, it’s a shame public figures have to make EVERY aspect of their life public knowledge. She shouldn’t have to defend her husband or the "situation" adding more humility to the whole debacle. The reality show is about raising 8 kids..  not raising a husband.
