Women from all walks of life will be getting together in October to share their stories about coping with loss — especially the loss of a child — and tough family issues everyone from Hollywood stars to the average soccer mom face.

During the California Governor’s Conference for Women, hosted by Golden State First Lady Maria Shriver, personalities including actress Kelly Preston, Kate Gosselin of "Jon & Kate Plus 8," Elizabeth Edwards and others will come together. Jett, the son of Preston and John Travolta, died in January during a family trip to the Bahamas. Jett’s death fueled scads of reports about his health conditions, Scientology and what treatment — if any — Jett was receiving for them. The conference will mark the first time Preston will be speaking publicly about her loss.

"If she can empower one other woman who feels like they can’t get out of bed, or get through the day, whatever the loss, it’ll be worthwhile sharing her story," Shriver told People. "I asked her to speak and she knew about the conference and decided if she was only going to speak once, it would be here. She wants the conversation to be about more than just her."

Preston will be joined on a panel titled "Grief & Resilience" by Elizabeth Edwards and actress Susan St. James – both of whom have lost sons. Edwards also had to deal with discovering that her husband, former presidential candidate John Edwards, had an affair with a campaign staffer and may have an illegitimate child with her. Other speakers will include Cindy and Meghan McCain — wife and daughter of Arizona senator and former presidential candidate John McCain — Caroline Kennedy, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Vanity Fair photographer Annie Leibovitz and racecar driver Danica Patrick.

This is an event surely not to be missed!

Would be great if I didn’t have to go across country to see it too!

I’m a Californian, a mom, a sister, and someone who copes in every day life with everyday struggles.  I have no desire to attend this conference or hear anything that these speakers have to say.  I still think Mrs. Edwards is a strong woman, but wish she would not be parading around her tale of dealing with a cheating spouse.  It’s just all too familiar and distressful.  If she is sticking by him, then let it die down Elizabeth.  Let it go, or leave him.  As to having Kate Gosselin, aka Mommy Dearest, on the panel, what in the world are the organizers thinking?  This is a woman who publicly spanked the heck out of one of her little ones in front of papparazzi, calls her boys icky and nasty, and makes her children work long hours to support her lavish lifestyle.  Why in the world would any woman want to listen to what Kate Gosselin has to say?  Seriously, the panel who chose her should be ashamed.

Jana, what was wrong with Kate spanking Leah that day, just b/c cameras were around?  Please, that child acted up and she got a spanking.  I am sure you spanked your kids or was it ok b/c it was only done in the privacy of your home?  She did not spank the heck out of her either, she tapped her on the tail a couple of times, since when is that wrong?

And for her making her kids work to support her lavish lifestyle, what work are the kids doing, there doing their normal daily activities but with cameras around.  There not out cleaning or modeling…they have been to places and seen things that without the show they would not have been able to see…

Boys are icky & nasty, they get dirty as hell.  I have a daughter out of all my friends who have boys and man when they play they go throught a lot more wipes then I do to get our kids clean.  Boys have cooties!!

C. Hardy, I just wanted to say that I always enjoy reading your posts and more often than not agree with your comments.  You have a very down to earth style!

I also think I read somewhere along the way that you and I may share the same employer.  Having said that, I was ‘severed’ in February of this year, but am on payroll until next year.  I am starting to look for work (internally first) as we speak…

Today has not been a good day…  As I was procrastinating on the job thing, I ran across your post and laughed out loud at the final paragraph - thanks so much, I needed that!!!

Lisa I am so sorry to hear that…Right now we were told we would know more in November about our Department thanks to all the mergers.  :(

I am glad that I could make you laugh today!  Boys do have cooties and they are gross!!!  Isnt that what we tell our daughters so they will stay away as long as possible?

Well, the good news is that in the last hour or so I have found twelve internal job postings that sound good…  Unfortunately I cannot see the band, but the descriptions sound like they are along the lines of what I was doing before.  The good news is that I am in Southern California (LA area) so that makes it a bit easier.  There are several posted for the consumer first mortgage teams in Calabasas and Simi Valley.  Should be interesting…  I’ve spent the past few months traveling and acting retired - now I need to start acting unemployed and look for work!

I am sorry about your department…  I have had to be the ‘deliverer’ of that news on several occasions over the past few years and it’s tough on everyone.  Because of that, I guess I always knew that at some point it would be my time to go.  I have thirty-one years in (all with the same employer), but the good news is that I am still relatively young (49) so hopefully ’ageism’ won’t be too much of an issue as I look for new work.  But, who knows - guess I’ll find out…

As for boys, yes - I tried to tell my daughter they had cooties.  But, she unfortunately is like her mama and enjoys the male species!  She is twenty now (yikes, I cannot even believe it - the time flies by) and will be starting her third year at UCLA in the fall.  She isn’t shy about confiding in me regarding her ‘crushes’.  In fact, just the other day she was telling me about the ‘hottie manager’ at work - and then went on to mention that he was probably closer to my age than hers.  OMG - sometimes I just don’t want to know stuff!!!

Lisa I will pray that you find another job soon!

Well my daughter is only 3 so I still have plenty of time to try & brain wash her into thinking boys have cooties and then when she is 25 maybe they get better :)

LOL!  You are so right about boys.  That brings back a memory.  I grew up with brothers.  We had only one bathroom.  In the evenings, Mom made certain they all showered first.  For good reason.  But, by then, there was no more hot water , so I had to get up early before school to shower.  And even that was a problem because one of them was usually "perched" in there with a comic book.

Well I grew up with a sister so my Dad was the only man in the house…So I wasnt really aware of how "dirty" boys can be until my husband comes home and takes off that uniform after a hot 100 degree day…his under clothes are just dripping wet and I can’t even hug him until he showers…But I love the way he looks in the uniform!!!  :)

In our defense we were talking about Kate Gosselin and how she says boys are nasty & gross…

I bet the woman coming together in that room would be a very powerful event to be a part of.  But it would entail me having to fly and I just dont like to do that.  :)

What does hot head Danica Patrick have to contribute, I wonder.

I would love to hear what many of those women have to say, not that I will be traveling that far to hear it.  I, however, have no respect for Kate Gosselin anymore.  There show was great when it started and they were "regular" people trying to raise a big family.  Now they are reality tv stars living off of the bizarre world they have created for themselves.  I don’t care that she spanked her kid, but honestly, raising that many kids is certainly easier when a lot of things are handed to you free, you have a ton of money and a nanny.  I would be more excited to hear from a women who was doing it without all of that.
