A Letterman Update: More Information, More Thoughts, by Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Margo’s advice column, Dear Margo, appears twice a week — on Thursdays and Fridays — on wowOwow.com.

Well, now I think Dave has real trouble. It has come to light that the young assistant at the center of the Letterman/Halderman drama was being paid $200,000 a year and was sent to law school, courtesy of Letterman, with the promise that she would become his personal attorney. A guy can always be in the company of his attorney, right? Then it appears she was taken on trips “with the family,” with Regina none the wiser.

Now my guess is the humiliation is too overwhelming to overlook. My earlier thought was that the Lettermans would work it out, but now I ain’t so sure. I still think young Harry is the glue in that marriage, but he wouldn’t be the first kid to go between Mommy’s house and Daddy’s house. Were Regina to write me, I would encourage her to opt out of this humiliating arrangement and, as they say, take the money and run. I have no idea what their prenup says, but he is loaded, and given what’s gone on, her life would continue as lavishly as before. The guilty party is quite evident here … plus, the mother gets the kid, no question.

There is just so much a girl can put up with, and with each revelation he is looking more like a skunk. I wrote my previous piece with the information I had. Knowing what I know now, I am no longer sympathetic. It is quite clear that Dave, like many another middle-aged guy, cannot resist the chase and, alas, 20-some years with one woman has become totally boring to him. A pity. I believe that in any real sense he has already lost the cozy family of three, and if more drek comes out, he may lose his show. Stay tuned.

There will always be more to any big-name story on philandering, but this is still a separate issue from the extortion. I am not a Lettermna fan and never watch the show, but I confess that I don’t fully understand the rising shrieks of indignation against him, while Halderman’s name scarcely gets a mention. Why is that - is it because women identify more with the wronged woman as victim, than with the extortion victim?  Does the target of women’s outrage here reflect our own fears, rather than which actions were truly criminal?

Maybe they have both acted like heels, but keep it in perspective.  As Margo says, Harry wouldn’t be the first child of divorce, and Dave is like many another middle-aged guy.  Maybe our own guys and ex-guys.  I am guessing that guys who resort to extortion because their girlfriend was unfaithful are a bit more rare.

Letterman’s actions may well lead down the path of divorce, alimony, child support, and negative impact on his career.

Halderman’s actions may well lead to jail.

Ahhhhh, DL can afford to retire - and that he should. His show has been a flop for years.

The New York Post showed a picture of Regina, taken yesterday, with her head down, trying to get somewhere in NYC.  It was very sad.  I feel very sorry for this woman and can’t imagine how she could have been naive enough to fall for all the crap all these years.  I don’t think anyone believes the affair ended before the marriage.

Uh oh, cue the choruses of "a-HA!" "I KNEW it!", and "Ann Landers would have seen through this right from the beginning!" ;-)

I do feel even more sympathy for his wife, because (if true) this situation continues to become more and more humiliating for her.  But at the end of the day I still believe that I’m not the one to whom he has to explain himself.  As bad as this is getting, I look to talk show hosts for entertainment, not moral guidance.  At the same time, I wouldn’t begrudge anyone else who decided they couldn’t watch his show anymore after this.  I don’t watch the show now, so it won’t change anything for me.

I don’t know where anyone is getting their information from, but according to Letterman’s own staffers everyone was treated the same in the office regardless of whether they were sleeping with him. Ms. Burkitt, the "young lady" in the middle of this scandal, was born in 1975, making her 34 this year. At one time, she was Letterman’s live-in girlfriend. She also had a reputation prior to getting involved with Letterman as one who sleeps her way to the top, search the NY Post for this information. She started working with CBS on multiple programs, including Late Show, in 1996, when she was 21, working as an intern. It was sometime later that she was full time on the Late Show. BTW, in 1996 Dave would have been 49. No where have I read exactly when he was involved with Ms. Burkitt, but if she was his live-in girlfriend it only stands to reason that he wasn’t yet with the woman who is now his wife. If he was, then that would make his wife “the other woman” who broke up Letterman and Burkitt. Come on people, the bottom line is this is a personal matter to be handled between husband and wife. I’ve been in her shoes, though thankfully not in the public eye. It is possible to forgive and move forward, and it is possible for one who committed such an indiscretion to never do it again.

From what I’ve read, Ms. Burkitt wasn’t Letterman’s live-in girlfriend, but the accused blackmailer’s live-in.  Mr. Halderman supposedly found Ms. Burkitt’s diary after she moved out which detailed her relationship with Letterman, and then used it to try to extort money from him.  Say what you want about Letterman, but at least he had the sense to come clean about it immediately — he didn’t try to pay the hush money, and admitted to the public and his family what he did — no easy task. Some of the other public figures who have been embroiled in similar sex scandals in the past decade (Bill Clinton, anyone?) should have owned up to it as quickly as Letterman did.  Not that their reputations or jobs (Elliot Spitzer) could have been saved, but at least they could have retained some measure of dignity (are you listening, elected officials?), and not come under fire for lying under oath.

You are mistaken on a key point: Letterman and Lasco have been together for 23 years. If we go by your information, Burkitt would have been a live-in girlfriend at the ripe old age of 11.

Margo: I sure hope you finally see the light on this perv? People will make mistakes about live in vs non live in, who cares. The bottomline is that Letterman got caught bigtime. He deserves to lose three quarters of his money. This says there is no prenup. I love it. http://bumpshack.com/2009/10/10/letterman%E2%80%99s-wife-regina-lasko-wants-divorce-pre-nup/

Frank — remember the old saying, "Time wounds all heels?" Your link is news to me and I think it’s the way things ought to be. Not that anyone asked, but I did not want her to stay in this marriage, and I LOVE that there is no pre-nup. As I said in another post, given what’s gone on, I think he will hand over a bundle, if from guilt if nothing else. Go, Regina, say I. Look for Dave to move into a hotel any day now …

Margo: I’ll be completely honest with you (and whoever else is reading). The real reason I’m glad Letterman is getting his, is beacuse of his big mouth about Sarah Palin.

Yes, I’m a Sarah Palin supporter. I realize Sarah Palin, other public figures are open season, but the hypocrisy regarding Letterman is unbelievable. It was satisfying watching him squirm and aplogize to Palin, this fiasco has hurt many innocent people involved. Without a prenup, its open season on his cash.

We may be prematurely happy that Letterman’ll get his. I have seen the info from that link nowhere else. And c’mon, being a Palin fan should have nothing to do with Letterman’s personal situation. That would neatly match the definition of schadenfreude.

Margo: I was just telling the truth about Letterman. Letterman has been after Palin and her family for as long as shes been in the spotlight.

Letterman has already gotten his. Wherever he goes, he’ll be a joke. It’ll fade away, but never forgotten. Look at cross dressing, woman biter, Marv Albert? 200 million might help Lettermans wife with her humiliation.

What a slug! I am not privy to his relationship status with the future wife, but this is just repulsive. I didn’t comment last time, but I have to say I have never found him attractive or funny. Paula siad it best above "arrogant, immature & add a dweeb.  I’ve watched his show merely out of curiosity (& the guests). Not to be old fashioned, but I have to say Jay & Johnnie & are much better.

The past 5 years, I’ve yet to find one of those shows worth watching - men pracing are not my idea of enjoyment, and women determinedly half nude as a guest aren’t either! Another half-A …. is Ferguson. That man did well in some films, and was funny - now he’s reached the lowest depths to keep the laugh tracks spinning. Life is far too much fun to waste time on these men. It’s time for some decent progamming with credible performers - where are they?
