Lily Tomlin (aka Tommy Velour) Remembers Michael Jackson in Her Own Special Way (Video)
I was touched by Michael Jackson’s sudden death as were millions of others around the world. Upon hearing the news, I immediately thought of when I first met Michael, back in the early ’70s. When he was just a teenager, Michael came with Diana Ross to visit the set of "Laugh In." He was shy, and observed everything with a sly, delighted smile.
The next time Michael and I were in the same space, it was in 1997 at Elizabeth Taylor’s 65th birthday party. I performed that evening as Tommy Velour. As Liz’s escort, Michael sat beside her, watching my performance with that same sly smile, that same shy response. I’m lucky enough to have the evening – and Michael’s laughter – caught on tape.
I’ve just now watched Michael’s child Paris at his memorial say "good-bye" to her dad and I am moved to tears for a child’s loss.

Watching Paris say goodbye to her father was heartbreaking. I couldn’t keep the tears from streaming down my face. It was quite a moving memorial service.
It’s when sudden losses like that of MIchael Jackson that I remember those performers and artists who mean the world to me: Lily, thank you for the laughter, you are a remarkable talent with the most insightful wisdom. Your comedy is a bright, shiny light that brings true happiness to millions of people. You truly are an amazing individual.
I’ve even had the pleasure of meeting with you a few times and I will forever cherish those moments. Keep the laughter and insight coming, Lily!
interesting that MJ was ok with you making fun from a distance, but when you approached Ms. Taylor and worked closely MJ crossed his arms defensively, as if he were afraid of what you might say or do
Ms. Taylor, on the other hand, was totally at ease.
Man, Lily, that took some ‘ovaries,’ all things considered. So you woke up that morning thinking, "Guess I’ll be moonwalking for Liz in front of Michael. Better go with a lite lunch?" Lord.
Today, loved hearing Stevie resonate with They Won’t Go, loved Judith Hill (singer from London production.) And Loved that Paris claimed her Daddy - to the world who never really considered or regarded him in that primary and pivotal role.
What do we know, anyway? I keep thinking about how media has gotten so circumscribed, we just completely miss the heart of the story.
Lily,
Thank you.
Laughter is a universal ‘healer’. How appropriate that ‘healing the world’ is among the more important themes that will be remembered in Michael Jackson’s music.
Ms Tomlin: I think teh first movie I ever remeber seeing in a theater was the Incredible Shrinking Woman… I loved you ever since then.
I feel all giddy typing this.. :)
