Yes, this was way out of line.  Doesn’t matter which daughter, or whose daughter, it’s offensive.  Ironically, I recently posted that I like Letterman and do not find him to be sadistic.  I may have to rethink that….

Wouldn’t it be great if Liza’s show was made into a documentary?  I’d line up for that.  Love her!

Um, gossip .. I keep hearing that Katie Holmes is finally going to break away from you know who ..

Actually what I heard was Katie was sick to death of idiots hasseling her and her husband. A man that has never been arrested, has never been found to do drugs, drink too much. Who honors his mother who raised him alone and who basically treats his fans with dignity and respect. He did make one mistake, he thought as an American living in a Democratic country he had the right of freedom of religion like most other Americans, but gosh darn it…who are these little daytrippers who think they have the right to sanction his religious choices and harass his family…ahhhhh   Christine W…right?

Irish Eyes .. I think it’s important to differentiate between a commentator, like Imus or Limbraugh, and a comedian doing a stand up routine.  Letterman said himself he was going for cheap laughs and, while in poor taste, he was not stating an opinion.  Also, I think the difference between 14 and 18 IS important to the issue.

I’m not sure I can make such a distinction.  Some things are just not suitable topics for humor, in anyone’s hands.  Imus deserved to lose his job.  I’m not familiar with what Limbaugh said, but I don’t doubt for a moment that it was inexcusable.  This was completely out of line as well.  I know I would beyond angry if anyone made such a crack about my daughter.  I’m quoting my mother for the second time today - "What’s good for the goose is good for the gander."

So Dreena where were you when Leno made a similar joke about Governor Palin’s 18 year old and John Edwards months ago? No hoopla, no rush to judgement. No feminists, we must march down broadway for Sarah Palin? gulp…Why? because this was never about the daughter…Gypsy Rose Palin, tossed Bristol to the public hordes last year…this is about mama getting some media attention to move her political agenda…

Well, Victoria, I was probably in bed asleep as I do not typically watch late night TV.  Or much of any TV for that matter.  I was not aware of Leno’s comment but it sounds like it was inexcusable as well.  I hereby denounce it.  I am actually not a huge Sarah Palin fan.  And, as far as late night hosts go, I always preferred Letterman over Leno.   But I am not a respector of persons.  When something is wrong, it is wrong - no matter who it is about or who says it.  I also do not care for the Clintons but was always offended when people said unkind things about Chelsea.

Christine, I think you nailed it.  Letterman might have known Palin’s daughter was not the 18 yr old but the 14 year old but then again might have relied on his writers to make that distinction.  However, he didn’t look too bothered but did say he might not be on the air the next day.  Letterman has always taken cheap shots and, I thought he had gotten better after his operation, but he seems to be slipping back into that meanness that he finds funny.

People in the public eye always act surprised when their families are talked about but most of them try to keep the kids out of the public eye.  The Palins had their kids center stage and so cheap shots will be taken.  It is unfortunate but this is a whole new age of cell phones and You Tube and Twitter and what all.  Don’t wear torn jammies to go get a quart of milk or you might end up an unwitting star on the computer.

If you can’t take it, don’t dish it out.

Pretty hypocrital of Laure to object to Palin’s comment if he thought Letterman’s comment was funny.

So, let me get this straight.  Irish Eyes is all over Letterman and the Palin comments, but it’s okay to hit on Chelsea Clinton? ( "Of course that remark should never have been said by Rush either,—————-even tho its true!")      Alrighty then !

The big news today is that 12 million people apparently had no idea the nation is going digital even as we speak and are now wondering what the hey is wrong with their TVs.

How is it even remotely possible that people could be unaware?

Re going digital and people’s awareness, I am finding that a lot of people are so self-absorbed, with I-pods and texting that it is a wonder many more of them dont walk in front of buses.  Jay Leno’s Jaywalking was an all-too-painful reminder of just how unaware so many of us are in regards to our surroundings.  Hope he brings that back in his new show.

It reminds me of something I heard about a man from New Mexico trying to use a check to buy something in another state and the clerk said they didnt take checks from a foreign country.  He tried to explain New Mexico is a state in the U.S.  The clerk didn’t believe him and called his boss who agreed with the clerk.  There is no limit to how insular we can become and that is scary.  It has nothing to do with how smart someone is but how narrow their scope or willingness to go outside their immediate circle.

Judy K: I think that most of the people who haven’t switch are older folks, most of whom are afraid of what they don’t understand.

Your comment about people not knowing that New Mexico is a state, is very sad indeed. It is a reflection on the schools. Geography is not being taught along with alot of other subjects that are not being taught.

I saw an American History book recently (high school level) with the likes of Marilyn Monroe & other hollywood people, but did not contain a list of all the past Presidents of this country.     Very sad, indeed,

In my area, there were a lot of calls from folks about their TV signal.  But the majority of them were well aware of the change, had their converter boxes and thought they were good to go.  What they did not realize was that they needed to rescan for channels after the switch.  Also most of those calls appeared to be from elderly folks.  Additionally, one local station’s broadcast tower is not strong enough to hold both the analog and digital antennas so the digital antenna won’t be in place until later this month.

Re: The Sarah Palin / David Letterman Feud

I’ve always believed that while politicians, celebrities and folks in the news are pretty much fair game for comics, their kids should be kept out of it for the most part. But let’s face it, in recent years, kids have become public commodities, part of the publicity machine. Politicians and celebs trot their offspring out for photo-ops, they willingly discuss them with interviewers, and the public seems endlessly fascinated with the kids. Sarah Palin was only too happy to bring her family to the forefront during her campaign, and she continues to do so. Now, Letterman’s comment was crude and clearly not a good choice of "joke material". That being said, when Palin objected, Dave made a lengthy, detailed and sincere apology. I have read that he invited Palin to come on the show. But she keeps making what she believes to be political hay by harping on and on about this, and has made statements that David Letterman is someone she would never want to expose her children to, and seems to imply that he is some sort of predator! Yikes! Palin has every right to speak out and chastise someone she feels has taken a cheap shot at her kids. She’s a mom, and that’s what moms do. But to keep fanning the flames, engaging in ad hominem arguments, and calling for Dave’s head on a platter, she is just plain overreacting. Time to stop the rhetoric, Gov. Palin and get back to your day job of running the great state of Alaska. Accept the man’s apology, take the high road, and move on. As for Dave, well, he made a bad joke in very poor taste and I’m sure he regrets it - his response was timely and certainly seemed both sincere and dignified and appropriate. He’s a father who obviously adores his own child, and understands that he caused some pain.

Bottom line: closure time is long overdue on this story! Let’s learn from it and then move ahead - - - please?
