Liz Smith: Is Bill O'Reilly a Secret Lefty?

“That they do!” answers Bill O’Reilly when I note that he’s “at the top” and “your enemies hate that!”
I spoke to the Fox talk king on the occasion when his show, “The O’Reilly Factor,” came to be listed as No. 1 for 100 consecutive months.
Some O’Reilly detractors felt he was bragging and note that “The Today Show” and “Meet the Press” had been on air longer. But Bill just added, “This was for 100 months in primetime!” I’ll let Bill speak for himself …
BILL: The people who lie about us on a daily basis, and you know who they are, like to omit the word "primetime." They do this every night. It’s a compliment to me. They can’t beat me so they have to slime me. We have enemies in the media because of our success primarily and then there is the ideological to consider – super liberals don’t like me. If it’s just about issues, we don’t care. If it’s personal attacks, we chalk it up to jealousy. Most of them we ignore.
LIZ: You’ve written eight books and five are on the bestseller list, including the last one with the fabulous title, A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity. How does anyone work as hard as you do and write books?
| It takes a lot of luck to get where I am. I’d give it about a million to one given my personality and the fact that I never kissed anybody’s butt. |
BILL: Well, the books are written at night and sometimes on the weekend. The secret to writing a book, if you have a regular job, is to say to yourself, "I’ll do ten pages a week." That’s how I do it.
LIZ: Are you privately religious?
BILL: I go to church. My line is I have to go every Sunday because otherwise I’ll fall behind in my atoning. I gotta atone or I’ll never catch up. I am a Catholic and I show up and the priest gives me a dirty look.
LIZ: I’ve known you almost 40 years, Bill, and in the early days, I just thought you were a good-looking news guy, but I admit I wasn’t prescient. I had no idea you’d turn out to be such a big deal! Maybe it was your conviction, your ambition, and maybe a Harvard education helped.
BILL: All those things helped. I always knew I would succeed but nobody could have possibly predicted success at this level. My work ethic was always strong, ever since I started in Scranton, PA, in 1976. I just said to myself, "Look, I’m going to work as hard as I can and I’m going to have fun."
But it takes a lot of luck to get where I am. I’d give it about a million to one given my personality and the fact that I never kissed anybody’s butt. But still, if I wasn’t having fun then I’d always go get another job.
If you add up the reruns of the show every night — our eight o’clock show appears on the West Coast and at 11 here, and adding that, we have more than five million viewers a night. So in a cable universe, we’ve accomplished a lot. And you know what I’m proudest of? BillOReilly.com — and all the money from the website goes to charity. This year we’ll donate close to a million, helping Habitat for Humanity, children’s charities, help for the homeless. This goes directly to the community. Every penny!
LIZ: But, Bill, in spite of what you say about having fun, are you really a happy guy?

Good points Donna,
His arrogance really bothers me too…but I find him an equal opportunity arrogant! (Is that even a word?) Frankly, it pains me to watch most of the talking heads cause they’re all snide and/or arrogant. But, ya know, many of my college profs and bosses over the years have been arrogant, and I learned from all of them, so I force myself to tune in.

I have noticed that as well. I used to only catch snippets of him while my husband watched, I was on the computer. Some of what he said made sense and other things didn’t, but agree with your assessment. I don’t like the way he treats women on the show, it is not interesting. He gives them a lot of time to discuss the legal issue thing, but then acts like he has to come in and settle the girl problem. He does that with some of the men as well. Sometimes I think he is tired or burned out from the same subjects all the time.
Hey Bill, quit it. You don’t need to do that - it makes you rather boorish and demeans what you are trying to accomplish.
Frannie Em- You know that is becoming my pet peeve with so many shows that I use to enjoy a lot, it seems to be all about ratings anymore. The louder and more shrill they get the better, I really enjoy hearing all the different view points, without the loud screeching over each other. You can tell immediately whether it is natural or fake!! How stupid do they think we are? If I want entertainment, I will switch to something else!!

I didn’t think I was alone in this. He does a lot of good and can play both sides of the aisle, when he gets irritated some like it, but I prefer the information. I saw Bernie Goldberg get impatient with him once or twice because Bill kept interrupting. Bernie sets up a point and is meticulous about it but with a general appeal, I just wanted to hear what he had to say.
Chris Matthews is the absolute most annoying. Someone is answering a very important question and all he does is interrupt and be bombastic. I just turn the channel. Waste of my precious time, besides the fact that he was a political kiss ass.
I highly doubt that he or his family have been threatened. He has illusions of grandeur and likes to make stuff up to make himself sound more than what he is. Remember his claim that HIS call for a boycott of French goods hurt France?? Check this out (and there are many more like it):
excerpt: Host Bill O’Reilly threatened Canada with a boycott like the one he advocated against France, then cited a phony statistic about the success of the French boycott. The threat came during O’Reilly’s April 27 debate with Toronto Globe and Mail columnist Heather Mallick about Canada’s harboring of two deserters from the U.S. military who have fled to Canada. From FOX News Channel’s The O’Reilly Factor:
Media Matters for America found no evidence of a publication named "The Paris Business Review." A Google.com search revealed no mentions of "Paris Business Review," "Revue des Affaires de Paris," or any similar French name. A LexisNexis search for "Paris," "France," or "French" within five words of "business review" produced no relevant results. There is a journal called "European Business Review," which is published in England; however, over the past two years, "European Business Review" has not mentioned an American boycott of France.
Furthermore, contrary to O’Reilly’s claim that France has lost "billions of dollars" due to an American boycott, American imports from France have actually increased since international tensions with France began in the months prior to the start of the war in Iraq in March 2003. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in February 2004, the United States imported $2.26 billion in French goods and services, up from $2.18 billion in February 2002."

It is a fact that he has been threatened. It has gone on for some years now. He and his family have to have protection when they are out and about. Someone once said it was terrorist organizations, but I don’t know about that.
