Liz Smith: Brits Survey Alaska's Sarah

"If anyone from small-town America can grow up to become president, surely it is Sarah Palin. She remains, by far, the most attractive woman in U.S. politics," writes Leonard Doyle in the Sunday Daily Telegraph.

But, hey, didn’t she quit her job in her first term as governor of Alaska, saying rather inexplicably that it was because "she loves Alaska"? So, how’s that again?

Mr. Doyle goes on: "America’s elite chortled at the explanations. When someone pointed out that she shot her first rabbit on her back porch aged just ten, the media deemed that, at 46, she had shot herself in both feet."

Indeed, Sarah Palin has gone on offering haikus of philosophy on her Twitter site, many inaccurately referenced to the famous, such as Socrates, when actually they are from someone else. Being specifically correct isn’t what moves Sarah Palin.

But, as writer Doyle notes correctly, "The media is often a poor predictor of events in the U.S. It was slow to identify Barack Obama’s chances of winning the Democratic nomination for the presidency. It completely missed the story of the global economic collapse. And thus, predictions about the end of Sarah Palin’s political life seem premature."

So, kids, we just have to wait and see.

Finally, after heaven only knows how many years, Whitney Houston’s new album, "I Look to You," arrives in September from Arista Records. This disc was slowly completed under the guidance of Whitney’s discoverer/mentor, the legendary Clive Davis.

Clive has never given up on Whitney, no matter the rumors whispered, how the tabloids screamed and her own infamous reality show with ex-hubby Bobby Brown.

So, on July 21, at the Allen Room of Jazz at Lincoln Center, the maestro Clive is putting on a cocktail reception and then an exclusive listening party. A select group will get to hear what Whitney can still deliver. I am betting this album goes over like gangbusters.

I first interviewed Whitney when she was just a young girl, fresh and dewy and untouched by the vagaries of fortune. What a doll she was then. And the last time I saw Whitney perform was two years ago in Los Angeles at a tribute to Clive. She looked glorious and sounded even better. Everybody was screaming – "Come back!" But then our Whitney sort of fell off the map again.

Well, she is back now! She is really serious about reactivating one of the great musical careers of all time.

Europeans have gone mad over the new show that is the biggest Vincent Van Gogh exhibition ever seen anywhere. This London event has made locals forget all about how their Members of Parliament are abusing their expense accounts. They are well into deep group psychoanalysis as to what made the famous painter tick.

"The Real Van Gogh" exhibit is causing speculation that, 120 years after his death, Vincent may now be diagnosed as having intermittent porphyria (the disease that caused King George III to lose the American colonies). They cite Van Gogh’s psychotic episodes, a family history of mental illness and his self-mutilation of cutting off his ear as a symbol of sexual castration, or a subconscious desire to possess his mother, plus a wish to emulate the offering of the bull’s ear in the bull ring as a prize. They also cite tinnitus, alcoholism, depression, gonorrhea, migraines, epilepsy and asthma as affecting his work!

Forty years ago that astronauts first stepped on the moon, eh? It was so exciting back then, space travel. I remember my parents let me stay up to watch late at night to watch the proceedings that week. And while I was in elementary school, TV’s were brought into the classroom for subsequent moon trips. I’ve loved astronomy ever since. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMINSD7MmT4

James  - I remember that night - it was so exciting to watch.  Living here in Florida we have the opportunity to experience ever single lift-off.  Except when it’s cloudy and the weather is gloomy.  Last night we watched the latest from our back yard.  It’s still amazing to me.  Guess I’m a space launch junkie.  And, now, a space station!  JFK would be astonished.  Remember his words "We choose to go to the moon" .    Thanks for the youtube watch!

On to sports — did you see where my Gators are ranked #1 for the upcomiong season.  Scary.  I hate that ranking.  Everyone is standing in line to knock you off.  They look good James - 22 returning starters and they are three deep at just about every position.  I sure would love to go to the Rose Bowl this year - we shall see.  I notice that Michigan State is #25 - I think they should be ranked higher than that.  However, I don’t know how many returning players are back.  Give me some info on same.

How did your operation go?  Hope all is well!

Greetings, Gator. The operation seems to have gone well, in the sense that I didn’t flatline this time around. But I don’t know yet whether the hearing will be improved, and won’t for a while yet. Thanks for asking.

I’m more of a Michigan fan than Michigan State, when it comes to football, although I like both. Coach Mark D’Antonio has really turned the program around, and state could contend for the Big Ten title this year. The problem, though, is that they lost an outstanding running back in Javon Ringer. And they’ll have a new quarterback this year: either freshman sensation Kirk Cousins, or Keith Nichol, who played for Oklahahoma, then took last year off so he could transfer to Michigan State. I am not really into the prediction business. But the Spartans have built a strong foundation.

Meanwhile, I was extremely disappointed last year - Rich Rodriguez’s first as coach at Michigan. He replaced Lloyd Carr, who guided Michigan to the national title in 1997 (Jan. 1998), an undefeated season. But Jim Tressel’s Buckeyes have beaten Michigan up regularly in recent seasons. Carr retired, and in came Rodriguez, with this reputation of running a high-powered spread offense. He’d been very successful at West Virginia, but left in a whirl of controversy for the U of M, which had to pay not only a big contract to get him, but also his huge buyout from West Virginia.

And Michigan, mighty Michigan, won only a few games last year. I’ve been following the team since 1970, and last year was the first losing season I ever saw for the Wolverines. They had the nation’s longest consecutive-years streak for going to a bowl game snapped at 33. In a word, they were lousy. Now, Michigan’s got a stud quarterback prospect in Tate Forcier, and a running QB prospect in Denard Robinson. We’ll see how they do. I predict a .500 record, which would be a major improvement, but still lousy by Michigan standards.

As for Florida, they have an awesome unit, no doubt. But I’ll have to see these teams play some games to make a better assessment. See you in the Swamp.

Hiya James! I will not admit if I was around, or what it was that I may have been doing at the time of the moon walk…  ;]

My comment is to the Sarah Palin thing AGAIN. What really strikes me here, is how a large part of the population, that touts themselves as "for the little guy"…rip this woman apart. They cite, "no Ivy League education"…" she eats rabbits for gawd sakes"….things like that.

What kind of elistist cr@p is that? They attack someone because they perceive her as "less than" , while attempting to pretend to support the "less thans"….pathetic and the only "tranparent" thing going on with these elitists.

Oh…and that pesky economic meltdown that "no one saw coming during the elections?" BS….their were plenty that "saw it coming"…hell, they orchestrated it…they were COUNTING on it, in order to swing the election towards their hand raised, socialist candidate.

Soros and other billionaire investors planned and timed the economic meltdown…now they stand to make BILLIONS upon BILLIONS upon BILLION on the "new policies" and stocks. All anyone has to do is follow the money and how these corporations have been set up for green technology investments.

Buy in low…make that happen….and then reinvest with the new…bingo…GOZILLIONS to be made, again. People…get a clue.

Always struck me that they never did instigate an investigation into the run on the banks that took place last fall.  Someone, somewhere was withdrawing so much money they shut the banks down ….. Surely today this is something that should have been investigated but then again I think there were those who knew where the trail of breadcrumbs would lead and did not bother to follow ////

You are right there Canuck…it was all a manipulation and Obama knew that it was coming. They planned for it to hit, it was the center of the Soros plan. So many involved, but it started way back with Fannie and Freddie…and ACORN. So many affiliates, and Obama is shutting down investigations.

"The powers that be"…ya know.

If more people would really research these things, and not just accept what is placed in front of them, Americans would be more united in this effort. But we are stuck fighting between Dems and Rep….which is what they want.

Our country is being taken over and the people are ignorant for the most part.

Our family was so thrilled by watching the moon landing, we named our new dog after the affair. "Luna" was a German shorthair pointer and was our sweet house mate for many years. Also, during that time, we sponsored a little boy in Greece and received many letters from him. He had a goat that he named Luna after our dog. But when his grandfather died, they had to sell Luna to pay for the funeral. He went on to be an electrical engineer.

Absolutely respects to Patrice. It was a very nice story. I was just laughing at myself and how I read it at first.

I wish Whitney Houston well but she always strikes me as a person standing with her toes hanging over a precipice.  Clive Davis sees her great talent and I hope she is able to deliver.

I love Whitney…I could never see what she saw in that husband!

My words of wisdom….You can’t predict what Americans do or whom they like.  Just because someone makes a statement or a prediction doesn’t make it the gospel.

Palin in office is a prospect too bizarre & frightening to contemplate.  If she’s successful it will say terrible things about our country & our standards.
