wOw-Worthy Men: Liz Smith, Candice Bergen and Cynthia McFadden's Favorites

The wOw women get together and, as women sometimes do, talk about men.

LIZ:  Candy and I are talking about men we have a crush on and I just named Craig Ferguson, the late-night Scotsman on CBS. Oh, I think he is so cute.

CANDICE: I have a crush on Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart. But more Stephen Colbert because I think the guy has guts.

LIZ: Yes, it’s really incredible what he gets away with, isn’t it?

CANDICE: Oh, I saw him at the Washington Press Corps dinner. What he took on … Oh, my God, my mouth was just opening.

CYNTHIA: Well, alright, I say Tony Blair for me. If he would just say he was wrong about the war in Iraq, I could really go for him. But I interviewed him a couple of years ago and I was just absolutely smitten. I guess I’m a little less so now …

Click here for photos of these wOw-worthy men.

CANDICE: I think everybody was having out-of-body experiences when that war was declared, and I don’t know that people can be held completely accountable for —

CYNTHIA: OK. Alright, so he has out-of-body exception.

Honey, when he gathers you up in his arms, it’s just unbelievable. He even beats George Clooney ...

LIZ: May I say a word? A P.S. to Candice’s love of Stephen Colbert? Now Candice, when we talk about him having guts and the things he gets away with, don’t you think it’s because his satire is on the right, and if he were doing a satire of somebody who was liberal, he couldn’t get away with it?

CANDICE: Bill Maher …

LIZ: Bill Maher. He’s just outrageous. He’s not doing satire; he’s right up front and opinionated. I don’t know if he particularly gets away with it. A lot of people hate him, but I don’t think anybody hates Stephen Colbert. I love both of these guys.

CANDICE: Right.

LIZ: It’s just whether they have sex appeal or not. OK, so let me just get Hugh Jackman out of the way. He’s one of my favorites.

CANDICE: He’s also one of the nicest.

LIZ: Yes, he’s a great guy.

CYNTHIA: Humor goes a long way. Looking you right in the eye goes a long way.

LIZ: I’m sure Candice knows this guy, and maybe some of you do, too, but one of the sexiest men I’ve ever known and still know is Bruce Willis. Honey, when he gathers you up in his arms, it’s just unbelievable. He even beats George Clooney, who is another person who knows how to zero in on you and make you feel he cares.

CANDICE:  I’ve never met Bruce, actually. I mean, I’ve seen him just at parties, but I’ve never met him. So I wouldn’t know, not like you do, Liz.

CYNTHIA:  I think Vernon Jordan’s right up there.

CANDICE: Absolutely.

LIZ: Yes, great. Sexy.

CYNTHIA: There’s something about … I really like intensity, men who have ideas and want you to know what they are. Their looks are not all that crucial to me.

LIZ: I agree, My friend Barry Diller is right up there with the dynamos. Whenever he talks to me, boy, I feel a lot.

CANDICE: Very attractive. No question.

CYNTHIA: Well, if we can put dead people on our list, I interviewed Paul Newman a year ago and I have to tell you, age was immaterial. He was one of the sexiest men I’ve ever talked to. He was so withholding in a way, and yet so available. I don’t know, it was a bizarre combination. He was really sexy.

CANDICE: Redford. When I was much, much younger, there was just nobody dreamier in every way than Redford. And he was always surprising in his choices and his intelligence and abilities. He was, I think, the first actor to step out of acting and direct, and he just sort of broke all the barriers. He was great.

Of the new "generation"; Hugh Jackman, Ben Affleck, Judd Apatow are certainly on a list..

the attraction is the intelligence and availabilty !!!!

Wow.  How could I leave out Laurence Fishburn?  And the late Richard Harris.  Back in the 70’s and early 80’s when my family had HBO, they used to show Broadway plays and musicals.  I was a preteen when I saw Mr. Harris in a stage production of Camelot shown on HBO and I was mesmerized by him then and there and in everything I’ve seen since.

Have we all forgotten Charlie Rose?  Or do you people know something I don’t?  I’ve never really been a drooler, but if I could pick a star from the sky to have a cup of coffee with, it would be Charlie.  Dan Abrams intrigues me, too…or the head of the Israeli News…who’s name I can never remember.

But I have to say, the last time my heart really throbbed was seeing this sweet young Irish boy named Keith Hardin in a group called Celtic Thunder on PBS.  He not only made me wish I were thirty years younger, he almost made me feel like I was.

Hi Ms. Dee…Cholly Rose, Cholly Rose, Cholly Rose !

Something about a smartypants guy with a Southern accent…He has helped me to escape the boondocks of the mind for years….long, long, long before the wonders of the web…

I particularly love his conversations about artistic process….no matter the art " form"….He has no peer on that score IMHO…

Geoh-gia!  Good to hear from you!  I thought of you, driving my little buggy around Lookout Mountain on my way to Savannah.  If I’d know where to find an Internet cafe in Chattenooga, I’d have tried to connect.  I spent a month in Georgia with my two army boys…one at Ft. Stewart, the other at Benning.  It was storming something feirce on my way home, Sunday, the 19th.  Hope you stayed warm and dry.

Personally, I like men I can talk with (none of the guys above qualify yet!).

If you are looking at straight beauty: Keannu Reeves (no making fun now!  I never said he was the sharpest tool in the shed!) has always made my little heart go a bit faster.

For wit (TRES Sexy!): I love Christopher Guest and his motley crue.

Steve Martin is cool especially on SNL.  In fact, I like most of the SNL people. Jimmy Fallon would be in serious trouble if I was a seriously younger.

But I like my men real, not in fantasy… and you know who YOU are :).

Keannu Reeves…Have you ever seen “A Walk in the Clouds”?

No, but isn’t that why God invented Netflix?  He is so yummy in the Bill and Ted movies… sorry, I did caveat it with he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed!

I liked the Bill and Ted movies too, though I do not think of any guy as “yummy”. This movie is a genuine romantic drama, which is rare for Keanu and is why I mentioned it. Enjoy

You are all fortunate in that you get to meet such dynamic men.  A man with a good brain is catnip for me.  As for looks, Jonathan Rhys Meyers is sensationally sexy as King Henry VII in "The Tudors".  Damian Lewis is dynamite, too.  He & Jeremy Irons carry themselves with such grace.  I love Michael Keaton for his talent, adorable looks & wicked sense of humor.  A SOH is also a big attraction.  Bill Maher is a staple here at our house.  My husband & I both think he’s excellent.  Probably because he says what we think!  Thanks for the discussion.

I get the Paul Newman and Robert Redford thing.  Has there ever been a better looking, sexier bad boy than Newman in " Hud"?   Throw Sam Shephard into that sexy mix also.

But of today’s actors, Gerard Butler is definitely eye candy.

There are way too many to choose…from Hugh Jackson to Brad Pitt to Sean Connery to Sam Elliott to Michael Jai White to Chow Yun-Fat…the list goes on and on and on…
