Liz Smith, Cartoonist?

Liz Smith

My silly habit is this one. I have a New Yorker year-long date book that is dotted with cartoons under the dates. I can’t resist redrawing these cartoons. Putting ties and stripes and colors on the characters in them. Fooling around with them while talking on the phone. Me? Trying to improve on The New Yorker!? It’s weird but I can’t help myself.

I really can’t do without this week-at-a-glance New Yorker diary. My pal Maurie Perl, who works for Condé Nast, sends me a red one, engraved with my name, every single year. I’m a sucker for this as a gift.

Liz, you are talking on the phone so that’s not wasting time! I do the same thing but I draw scales - the G cleft, the lines, I fill in random notes and I am not musical in the sense that I don’t have a clue what the notes stand for, etc. I have been doing this since grammar school!

Ooops, I see where they said *silly,* habits, too, Liz. I guess that’s what you meant. Did you know the New Yorker actually has a new thing where people write captions on line and actually design one of their cartoons with their drawings? Have you heard of it? It’s on their page. I really wish I could draw, I would love to do that, just for fun, I love writing captions, jingles, lipstick names, you name it. No! Let ME name it. : )
