Liz Smith: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Hubby – Hosts With the Most

"All great art contains humor. Insofar as Beethoven lacked humor he lacked greatness. Children and the insane lack the irony of humor. Ironically, the great are sometimes called grown-up children. They are not. They are like everyone else only more so – like everyone else, but no one is like them," writes the musician Ned Rorem.

So, who sez big stars never have any normal, upscale, stylish fun and nobody in "showbiz" ever gives a party anymore unless it’s "promotional"? Turns out not to be true.

Last week, at the posh St. Regis Roof in Manhattan, those married lovebirds Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas gave themselves (and others famously born on September 25, such as Barbara Walters and Will Smith) a birthday party to end all. Catherine was glorious in her svelte, dark-red, satin gown and Michael was as handsome as ever in his dynastic, civilized manner. (Michael is one of the rare Hollywood offspring to do his forebear, Kirk Douglas, proud.)

I didn’t know everyone at this gala but the people at my table and nearby were all longtime friends and acquaintances – Melania and Donald Trump, Broadway producer Marty Richards, the star Chita Rivera, her vivacious daughter Lisa Mordente, Wendy and Ambassador Bill Leurs (he is now teaching after his years at the UN and heading up the Metropolitan Museum), Veronica and Ray Kelly (he is my favorite Police Chief ever!), as well as those high-finance performers Marie Josee and Henry Kravis and Princess Firyal of Jordan with the handsome Gil Shiva. Not to forget those great entertainment stars, Ashford & Simpson.

Michael kicked off the dinner with a brief welcoming speech and salute to his young bride and she took the microphone to introduce a number of tables of her relatives and pals from Wales. They all stood and sang us a Welsh song.

Catherine said of the decorative seven-foot flowering trees dotting the ballroom: "Do you think we went over the top; is it too much? Oh, who gives a shit!" Big laughter.

Soon to star as Desiree in the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s "A Little Night Music," Catherine shuddered when I asked if she had ever seen this famous classic cult musical. "No, and I’m scared to death!" said she, throwing up her hands. But as she won an Oscar for the movie version of "Chicago," I’m sure she has nothing to worry about.

Michael said they are very happy having moved to New York for the near future and he has just started his sequel to 1987’s "Wall Street," where he will revive the character Gordon Gekko. "Greed, greed, greed … good, good, good!" he laughed.

I had a nice exchange with the birthday couple’s young son Dylan, age nine. I told him I had seen his beautiful family house in Bermuda and he said, "Yes, we love it there. It’s great." Dylan is very grown up!

Donald Trump said to his beautiful Melania, "Do you know how many years I have known this woman?" indicating me. Melania sighed: "Yes, Donald, I know. You tell me this same thing every time we see Liz." I had a lot of fun dishing with Donald over the fabulous St. Regis lamb chops. He loves gossip and I do too. He is a fascinating dinner companion. (And to think, back when the book The Lost Tycoon came out, Donald and I were shown as enemies in the pages.) Wise people change their minds!

My date, the portrait painter Peter Rogers, had the time of his life on the dance floor with Chita Rivera. He went home happy, saying: "Now, in my lifetime, I have ballroom danced with two of the greatest – Ginger Rogers and Chita Rivera."

Liz, I’ve read your column for year in the newspaper and I enjoy hearing about the rich and famous. Can you give me some info about what Liz Taylor’s children have done with their lives.  I always related to her pain from various illnesses and hope her children have given her comport.

I’ll admit it, I was one of those who said it would never last. I’m glad Michael has changed his ways and proved me wrong. Congrats to the couple!

CONGRATULATIONS AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Michael and Catherine, and all who celebrated their birthdays on September 25th.  My youngest daughter’s birthday is also this date, so I can immagine what their personalities are like.  They love to talk and laugh, but they have to be careful not to talk too much or at the wrong time or they will get into trouble.

It would be nice if M Douglas would have something to do with his kids from his previous marriage. He played around and did nothing really to do with them. He seemed to make no effort on his first marriage. Is it no wonder that his son (note: from his first wife) was arrested due to drugs? He does not care like others he is more involved with his 2nd family.

It’s such a shame when men turn their backs on their families when they begin new ones.  I know so many people who have lived with this situation, and it is so painful for the mothers and the children, both.   We need to teach our sons more responsibility regarding fatherhood, so the next generation of mothers and children don’t have to endure such emotional pain.

It seems to me, that while Michael Douglas and his wife may have celebrated that evening, they may have done so with heavy hearts.  I hope the entire Douglas family will have find happiness and good health, in the days ahead.
