Liz Smith: CNN Celebrates Ms. Christiane Amanpour

Also from Our Gossip Girl, an evening with Lauren Bacall … Tim Gunn, real star, real gent.

"Secession is the essence of anarchy," said Lincoln, who believed such an event would cause the U.S. to "collapse into a multitude of petty autocracies, thus fulfilling the prediction of European monarchists and aristocrats that the mad republican experiment of 1776 would never endure." I quote James McPherson from The New York Review.

And yet this is what some crazy people seem to want.

CNN pulled out all the stops for their kickoff Michael’s lunch to introduce Christiane Amanpour’s coming new show, bowing weekdays at three o’clock PM on CNN International on September 21. (Sundays at two o’clock PM CNN/U.S.)

Fourth estate luminaries from Time to CBS to ABC and The Daily News were there as well as people like Gloria Steinem, Karenna Gore Schiff, Lisa Caputo, Susan Mercandetti, Clare Gregorian, Harry Evans, "60 Minutes" honcho Vicki Gordon, Police Chief Ray Kelly, et al. And I got to hug my longtime ago "Live at Five" cohort Jack Cafferty, whose e-mails from an irate public make CNN such a hit during its "Situation Room" news hour.

CNN’s head guy, Jon Klein, had a gracious intro for Christiane and her producer, Kathy O’Hearn, and then the star herself said a few words. She remarked that she had spent her reporting years in the field and now people thought she was in the studio, out of the danger zone. "They don’t realize that being inside constitutes ‘the danger zone’ for me, so I will have to watch it." This much-respected pro is going to be a big hit, I predict.

Delighted to see that the New York Post has hired a distinguished Pulitzer Prize winner, Michael Goodwin, to write for them. It’s nice being replaced by someone who is really talented … At the CNN party I met young Jose Antonio Vargas, who told me the story of how he was being pushed around at a party by someone who mistook him for a waiter. Arianna Huffington observed this, intervened and befriended Jose and now he is writing for The Huffington Post.

On October 5, the legend herself, Lauren Bacall, will be feted at a private screening of her classic 1957 Vincent Minnelli comedy, "Designing Woman." This co-starred Gregory Peck. Rex Reed will be on hand at The Lighthouse Theater on East 59th Street to say a lot of laudatory things. Miss Bacall, who doesn’t suffer fools or foolish questions gladly, has consented to a Q & A following the film.

Being old doesn’t mean you are all washed up. How about the 92-year-old singer Dame Vera Lynn. She was the sweetheart of the British armed forces in World War II and equally embraced by every GI who landed in England to fight. I remember my fiancé writing me from the airfields of Great Britain to say he’d actually fallen for a singer named Vera Lynn. "I love this woman’s singing so much, it is interfering when I bend over the bomb sight to take aim at the Germans." (In spite of this infatuation, eventually we got married anyway.)

Vera Lynn last topped the charts in 1952. But now she could rank as the oldest artist in English musical history to have a No. 1 record. Her album "We’ll Meet Again – The Very Best of Vera Lynn" – is poised to steal The Beatles’ thunder as they return with their remastered releases.

Vera Lynn , I could nevr forget her. She sang to our fighting spirit. I must have been under a rock for some time. I did not know she was still alive and did not remember that she was now a":dame". Thank you, dear Vera, for the joy you brought us. Glad that in Liz’s writing about you "we meet again".

Though I was only a toddler during WWII I do remember family members in later years praising her to the skies. I have a few recordings of her great songs on some of my ‘nostalgia’ discs.  A wonderful singer and truly a Great Brit.  As for Mr. Gunn, I loathe and rarely watch reality shows.  I have zero tolerance for diva attitude from no-talent wannabes, especially the faux fashion type shows.  He, obviously knows what he is doing and is, in fact a master of personal style.  He exudes an air of absolute, inherent class.  He is one of the nicest, truly constructive authorities I have yet encountered in the Fashion TV world.  If I had a hat, I’d take it off to him.

Dear Liz: I certainly know nothing about the NY Post, but I know this: You are an amazing and rare spiritual/intellectual flower: No matter where you are, or what medium of journalistic communication you use,you are an exemplar of the biblical injunction: "Bloom where you are planted!"….God bless! Have a fun and peaceful weekend. Frederica Winter

What a great column, Liz! A true celebration of classy women of all ages. Ms. Amanpour’s professionalism and savvy are legendary, and rightfully so. And by God, Lauren Bacall still oozes glamour and star quality. (My favorite of her more recent films is the magnificent A Foreign Field with the late, great Alec Guinness and Leo McKern, among others in a truly stellar cast. I can highly recommend this film to all wOwers - it will rock you to the heights and depths of emotion. And as for Vera Lynn, well, I grew up listening to the records of her wartime hits, watching my parents dance to her lovely voice. Just the other day I happened to hear on a satellite station her rendition of "We’ll Meet Again", and felt a lump in my throat thinking of the meaning behind that song - thinking of a time when so many husbands and wives, sweethearts, mothers and sons, sisters and brothers were separated in a dark, dark time, and what a chord that song struck for them all.

I have the utmost admiration and respect for Christianne Amanpour, I enjoyed the nod to Vera Lynn, and I can’t wait for a Q&A with Lauren Bacall - how delicious that will be!  I love her style, her humor, and her no-nonsense approach to the inane and ridiculous.

Great news about Christiane Amanpour! She has always been one of my favorite in-the-field reporters. I always believed she was the bravest woman in news because she dared to go where others never would. If anyone is deserving of her own show it would be her.

Congrats to you Christiane!

Tim Gunn was/is after all an educator. It pleases me that such a person is so respected and liked.

I too have long admired Christiane Amanpour.  Now she has her own show, just like Campbell Brown. Just wish one of my other two favourite CNN men, Rick Sanchez and…Jack Cafferty each had THEIR own shows.  Rick gets the last hour of CNN Newsroom and I also love the Newsroom’s Kyra Phillips, she starts at l o’clock and goes until 3 o’clock.  There are some incredibly talented women at CNN as well as Burea Chiefs here and there.

Congrats! Christiane….you DESERVE it!  Oh, btw, Liz, I saw you and Candace Bergen, another fav. actor on The View this morning and you said that wowOWow was the Internet version of The View.
