Liz Smith: Dame Judi Dench – Young as Ever

"The politics of cultural resentment!" This is my favorite phrase to express what’s going on in this crazy, magnificent, misguided country at the moment.

When Michael Jackson died, Bookmaker.com put together odds for which member of his inner circle would be first to put pen to paper in a tell-all-about-Michael book! There have been some rumblings that Janet Jackson is already planning to take on this possibly big-payoff task. People who placed bets with the online website stand to cash in at $600 for every $100 placed.
Here are the original odds (www.bookmaker.com), which then favored Michael’s pal, actor Macaulay Culkin, as the most likely to reach the deadline first:
La Toya Jackson +300
Jermaine Jackson +400
Diana Ross +500
Janet Jackson +600
Paris Jackson +600
Corey Feldman +600
Joe Jackson +700
Miko Brando +800
Macaulay Culkin +100
Elizabeth Taylor +1000
Oh, what the hell! Let every single one of the bettees" write their version of having known Michael best. It would be a surfeit of riches to consider.

If you’d like to send a reassuring loving message to the writer Dominick Dunne as he struggles with his illness and you’re not the type to ring up and intrude or bother his sons, Alex and Griffin, why not send your thoughtful message to DominicksDiary.com. Dominick is at home in New York at his apartment. He reads the Diary every day.
When I visited Dominick recently in the hospital, I asked if there was anything he needed from his country house in Connecticut. He said yes, he’d like to have his Bronze Star sent to him, and friends obliged. I’ll bet you didn’t know Dominick, a private in World War II, received his medal for bravery by saving another soldier’s life. He always says, "I don’t know how I did it. I am not brave." But he is.

Dame Judi Dench, age 74, is getting ready to play a role she first performed as a schoolgirl 56 years ago. Judi will again play Titania in "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" at the Rose Theater in Kingston Upon Thames. Back in 1962 she was acclaimed for playing this queen of the fairies for Sir Peter Hall.
The RSC’s artistic director, Michael Boyd, told the British columnist, Mandrake: "Judi Dench has not aged in the same way that normal people do and her imagination remains as free as that of a small child or a fairy." Stanley Wells, chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, says he never heard of anyone playing the role in their 70s. "I am sure she will pull it off in some interesting way."

The former Mrs. Mick Jagger, that irrepressible Texan named Jerry Hall, is not only the global spokesperson for Levitra (erectile dysfunction) but she recently triumphed in a show at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival presenting "The Art of Laughter."
Jerry says, "No matter what makes you laugh, the most important thing is to laugh as much and as often as possible. Most of us don’t realize that laughter is very important to our sense of well-being."

Well, OK, but the Levitra advertisement does always make me snicker. I’m sure that’s not how it is intended. (Since they play it around the clock on TV these days, I am not so pleased with constantly having to explain it to young children who ask what it’s all about.)

Liz,
No comment…except THANKS for your wonderful articles.
Dame Judi Dench - what a dame! I recently purchased the DVD of Cranford which aired on the BBC (I believe). She was incandescent! And if you are also a fan of that wonderful series, here’s good news: I read that a sequel is in the works - and Dame Judi will be on board.
My absolute favorite moment in Shakespeare in Love was Dame Judy’s Queen Elizabeth. She could say more with a lifted eyebrow and a half-smile than anyone could believe. She’s a gem! Thanks, Liz, for another juicy column.
Liz, thank you for giving us Dominic Dunne’s website address. I’ve enjoyed his writing so much throuigh the years and his articles in VF. I hope to see him return to good health soon.
I agree about the worth of "My One and Only,’ which is a delight. I usually prefer the very serious, grim dramas which make me ‘suffer’ and think, and this, too, provoked thoughts and feelings. First, it is about George Hamilton’s childhood, and those of us who recognize the era, his mother, her antics, the clothes, mores, everything was familiar, perhaps exaggerated, but reminded me of the social limitations, especially of men and women’s relationships, and the either/or choices women made. The so-called dizzy blonde had a mind and sense of parenthood, which may have been unique, but wonderful.
Especially, I appreciated the complex and deep mother/son connection which was very well done. And Renee Zellweger always takes risks in her choices of films. Bravo to Renee.
Renee Zellweger is one of those actresses whose rise to fame I’ve never quite got. But there are several of those in my mind so nothing personal. I just always kind of think "why her?". She’s not particularly beautiful. She’s talented but not more so than some other actresses who aren’t movie stars. I can think of half a dozen actresses off the top that I saw in episodic tv (like the sopranos or deadwood) who were as good of actresses that haven’t done anything since really. that were as attractive or more so… and Renee Zellweger is a movie star? it’s just one of those things that makes you go "hmmmm". all businesses are a lot deeper than just being good at your job. She must have a great agent or people who work with her just adore her or she’s lucky… or? I can tell Liz adores her so she must be a real cool chick.
Now Kevin Bacon… him i get lol…
Judi Dench is an inspiration to all of us women entering the backstretch.
As far as Levitra, why are so many men going soft? Hmmm.
I found a dating site " kisscougar.com " .where you have the opportunity dreaming about dating a millionaire and make it true! u dont have to be a millionaire.but u can meet one. I thought everyone needed to meet some miracle after all the terrible stuff in the news and the economy .
I adore Judi Dench and have watched ATGB more times than I can count and she still dazzles me. I read a story somewhere recently that makes me laugh everytime I think about it. It seems she was crossing a street and nearly got hit by a cab. The cabbie screamed out the window "Watch where you are going you c**t" "That’s Dame c**t to you" she replied.
One of my favorite movies is Chocolat. How could it not be with Judi and the divine Johnny Depp.
I love Judi Dench in everything she does and I get to enjoy her every Saturday on my local PBS station in the BBC production "As Time Goes By".
Ms Dench is a perfect example of a woman aging gracefully and beautifully. She is still working because her face still moves, still looks human and she is a brilliant actress.
