Liz Smith: Just Plain Ol' Denzel Washington?

This was a week of two kickoffs – Page Six’s Paula Froelich’s new novel, Mercury in Retrograde,
received a clash of lifted glasses and I have already told you that this is a kind of “Sex & the Witty” fiction for our times.
Then there was the delightful Pia Lindstrom’s celebration of her new Sirius XM radio show at Morton’s Steakhouse. Pia is one of New York’s treasures and she is happily supported by her famous sisters, Isabella and Ingrid Rossellini (these three women are the daughters of none other than film legend Ingrid Bergman). I worked with Pia for years when “Live at Five” was WNBC’s signature hit. Nobody knows more about entertainment or has more common sense and down-to-earth charm.

It looks as if the heir to the British throne, Prince William, and his delightful off-and-on-again girlfriend, Kate Middleton, may be very much back “on.” The BBC is so sure of it that they have already put together a program about the love affair and have it ready to air when the announcement is made. And one BBC executive told the Daily Telegraph, “We would not be spending money on this … if we had not been assured that they were definitely going to get engaged.”
The Brits could use some good upbeat news for a change, what with all those members of Parliament putting everything but the dog dish on their expense accounts!
Well, but, hey, one of them did put a stainless steel dog bowl on his expense account, to the tune of about five dollars.
