Liz Smith: Dominick Dunne's Battle in Bavaria; Natasha – One Scoop I'd Like to Have Been Wrong About

“Bad manners, the infallible sign of genius,” said regal, hard-drinking Joan Crawford to surly violinist John Garfield in the 1946 movie “Humoresque.”
——————————
Speaking of manners, the intrepid social and crime reporter Dominick Dunne, e-mails from Bavaria, where he is undergoing cancer treatment with 15 others, some of them well-known — but all (except Dominick) requesting that we not use their names.
Dominick writes: “It is an extraordinary experience here and I am so glad I came. It is still winter with blizzards and we are surrounded by mountains. But it is beautiful and I love my lady doctor who is passionate about the advances being made in medicine. I am now sitting in the infusion room having magic things dripped into my arms as I do every morning for three hours. I am reading your column in Daily Variety provided by another patient to whom it is faxed daily.”
Dominick, ever the reporter and foreign-or-domestic correspondent, adds a P.S. about actress Scarlett Johansson, who I had reported would soon make an action film. Dominick says this movie is titled “Barbarian Queen.”
He adds: “This will be a remake, for the property was made before and it was the only film Lana Clarkson ever got to star in. She was the girl murdered by Phil Spector when she unfortunately went home with him one night.”

I see that the Daily Telegraph of London claims that it was the New York Post that reported first that Natasha Richardson’s life support machine had been switched off on Wednesday evening.
Hate to disagree with my favorite English newspaper, but it was the wOw website, reporting at 1:55 Wednesday afternoon that Natasha had been taken off life support — three hours before the New York Post! This nanosecond info was picked up everywhere in cyberspace, sending tens of thousands of visitors back to our site and making it the third-largest traffic day in wOw’s short but amazing history.
But getting a “scoop” about this tragic story was not fun and I even hoped I would be proven wrong. I was then amazed at the number of journalists, TV bookers, radio and TV stations and big shows that contacted my office asking me to “expand” on my brief information. I guess they all imagined I had a lot more news that I was suppressing, or more to add if only they could dig it out of me, or that I would tell them my sources. (Many of them actually asked how I knew it.)
I didn’t know more than I reported here. I would never reveal a source any more than any other sane person working in journalism. But I was touched, at the time, by an e-mail from Lee Woodruff, who had lived through her husband Bob’s wounding by an IED in Iraq. Lee wanted to help but didn’t want to intrude. Her remarks about the horrors of brain injury touched me to the heart.
This is an astounding, almost inexplicable tragedy and signals the loss of one of the most interesting, charming and loved persons in theater.

“When Lourdes asks about Jesus Luz (Madonna’s new young friend), Mama Madonna feels she has a good answer — ‘Don’t let other people dictate your life for you. Make your own choices about who you want to be with. If it’s a mistake, at least it’s your mistake.’”
That’s info from New York “friends” of Madonna, reported in a British tabloid. So we can spread a few grains of salt around that one.

Thank you for the posting on the fearless Dominick Dunne, and very very best wishes to him for a speedy recovery - what courage this man has, and how much admiration we have for his great talent. He is in a very small league of legendary, larger-than-life writers, which includes our own Liz Smith!
Words can’t express the sadness on the death of Natasha Richardson - the picture in the above posting is so beautiful, and just glows with her happiness and intelligence - wonderful evidence of her fulfilled life…
"Lourdes may be well equipped to deal with/understand her recently divorced, driven and complex mother, who is trying to feel appreciated again, after a marriage to director Guy Ritchie. That one left her feeling not-so-hot about herself"
Liz,
You seem to have a great deal of empathy for Madonna, but no girl at the age of 12, no matter how mature she appears to be, is truly equipped nor should she have to "understand" her mother’s emotional and physical needs.
Madonna wants to convey the image of being a strong, self-directed woman, who can pave her own way and does not need the approval of others. The reality is something quite different. Hooking up with a callow youth, who could be her son, simply confirms to me that she is a narcissist who is in need of constant adulation. There is no doubt, she will eventually tire of him and he’ll be discarded. Meanwhile, all Lourdes will take from this experience is that her mother is a demanding, highly strung, self-absorbed wench. I wonder what kind of adult Lourdes will become — will she end up a diva like her mother or will she end up living a quiet productive life in a completely different realm?
My heart breaks for the loss to the family of Natasha Richardson. Having lost two children, my son on his 29th birthday of a drug overdose in 1988, and my daughter at age 33 in 1995 hit by a 17-year old driver as she was walking to work, I truly understand the pain Vanessa Redgrave must be suffering. Natasha had accomplished much in her life but still had many years ahead of her. So very sad. May the family find comfort in being together and knowing there are many people throughout the world remembering them in their thoughts and prayers.
Hi Liz. Thanks for the news and updates.
I had no idea that Dominick Dunne was ill and I’m thankful to hear that he is moving forward with such a positive attitude. His work is always very interesting and I find it very enjoyable. I find myself wondering about the center where he is being treated in Bavaria. I remember that Farrah Fawcett was treated in Germany and had quite good results at the time. Can you tell us if Mr. Dunne is receiving treatment at the same clinic? If so it might be very interesting to know more about the center. Of course I understand if this information is closely held and not for public consumption.
Thanks so much Liz. I wish that you’ll have a fabulous spring and a weekend chock full of only your favorite kinds of "nuts" and loved ones. As for me I’ll be meeting my intended rescue dog tomorrow morning. I can’t wait to meet my new little pal! Take good care.
Wishing you peace, love and light,
E
Dear E … when Dominick Dunne gets back from treatment in Bavaria (he has bladder cancer) I will ask him if we can write more details about the famous clinic he has gone to. I believe it is the same one Farrah Fawcett has attended and she is still with us.) It costs a lot of $ to travel to Bavaria for treatment but sounds like it might be worth it.
So keep reading me in Wowowow.com and soon I will better be able to answer your questions. Regards, Liz Smith
Liz,
I thought it might be the same clinic where Farrah Fawcett went. She seems to have had very good results and I wish the same for Dominick Dunne. I can’t imagine it’s an easy process, yet he continues to engage with the world beyond the clinic and seems to still have a fairly cheery disposition. I really do hope that he’ll soon be on his way home with some very good news about himself.
Thanks for the response Liz. Along with many others I’ll definitely be looking for updates on and from Dominick Dunne so please let him know that we’re all waiting to hear and that we wish him all the best.
By the way I got my rescue dog yesterday - she’s a doll!
Thanks a million Tee Zee. Have a great week!
E
Liz,
Thanks for letting us know about Dominick Dunne. He is one of the best…I’m glad he’s keeping up a positive attitude. I’m also glad he said ‘to hell with them’ when his American doctors told him to give up and die. Cancer treatment in the United States is not the ‘be all and end all’…Dominick’s attitude is fearless and fabulous.
Long live Dominick Dunne!
I couldn’t agree more!!! Long live DD!!! A talented writer & a true gentleman.
Thanks Liz for letting us know he is on the mend.
