Liz Smith: Farrah Fawcett's Tender Loving Care

Also from Our Gossip Girl, Elvis and Sinatra – Treated better than Michael Jackson? … Bad Penny Palin: She’ll turn up again – and again! Hanging out at NYC’s hottest spot – Monkey Bar.

"She gave me a smile I could feel in my hip pocket," wrote Raymond Chandler.

The death of Farrah Fawcett, after her long and valiant battle against cancer, still has her friends and family reeling. This lovely woman was so strong minded, so determined to cure herself and live, that nobody was really sure she wasn’t going to get up and announce, "No, not yet!"

That wasn’t the case, unfortunately. And two who have been especially stricken by Farrah’s passing are her sister Angels, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith.

When Kate and Jaclyn had their own brushes with cancer, it was – along with their doctors – to Farrah they turned for support and guidance because, according to an insider, "She was always the most level-headed, and they knew she would know what to recommend immediately."

Farrah instantly dropped what she was doing, and went to Kate and Jacyln with healing diets and advice on the best treatments available. Jackson and Smith are cancer free today and they credit at least a part of their recovery to the devotion and intelligent outlook provided by Farrah Fawcett.

From the sublime and uplifting to the ludicrous and deliberately misleading.

I ask you, are all the people to whom Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson "preach" 20 years old, with no memory of the lives and deaths of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra?

Sharpton, in particular, continues to cite Presley and Sinatra as controversial celebrities whose lives were "respected" after death – at least "until after the funeral." Really? Really?

Well, sorry Al, but if I remember correctly, and I know I do, in the years leading up to Elvis Presley’s death there were many rumors of drugs, not to mention the jumpsuit-bursting results of his quite obvious gross eating habits. (I recall many a "fat Elvis" joke.)

Within hours of Presley’s death, every sordid speculation was in the newspapers and supermarket tabloids; from everywhere came members of his entourage speaking candidly about his rapacious capacity for drugs, food and young women. But along with all this was the weeping and the crying and the massive gatherings at Graceland and the great tributes to his talent. All before the funeral.

As for Frank Sinatra, he had lived a long life and had not been a carousing, reporter-punching hothead for many years. His old questionable associations with Mob figures were antique memories by the time of his death in 1998 at the age of 82. But all his wayward ways – womanizing, bad temper, shady friends – were mentioned within hours of his death, all those aspects of his life were included in his eulogies – before the funeral!

So – the often shocking and weird aspects of Michael Jackson’s life are supposed to be overlooked? Please. He’s been positively deified by the media in the week since his passing and I’ve not read one story or seen one TV tribute that didn’t cite his many artistic accomplishments. Along with all the other, less palatable stuff. (Including Quincy Jones – who was a real friend to Jackson – expressing his regret that Michael "didn’t want to be black." Let’s see Al and Jesse take on Quincy Jones.) I daresay Michael’s pharmaceutical peccadilloes and personal relationships were far quirkier than anything in Presley or Sinatra’s life. But Michael, like Frank (and Elvis), did it His Way, and didn’t seem to care too much how it looked to outsiders. Now we have this sordid circus based on the indisputable facts of Michael’s life.

But never underestimate the power of soulless publicity-seeking rabble-rousers like Sharpton and Jackson. I had to laugh as CNN reported Sharpton’s continued criticism of the media, defending itself self-consciously and more than once over several days: "We here at CNN have been very respectful of Michael Jackson!"

Sad. An entire network held hostage by two men who are just flat-out self-promoting jerks who try to insert themselves into every national story.

P.S. Despite all odds and predictions of rioting and "chaos," Michael’s elaborate memorial service yesterday went off without a hitch and there was some genuine emotion displayed, nothing more moving than the remarks of his beautiful young daughter, Paris. This child kind of wrenched one back into remembering that beneath the sometimes bizarre mask of Michael’s chosen persona, was a real person and, apparently, a loving and loved parent.

That’s the problem with the 24/7 news networks, Liz. They’ll gobble up whatever is fed to them, so long as the ratings needle is pegged to the right.

M.J., Elvis, JFK…anyone really famous seems to get raked over the coals more after death than before it. Just look at the scandalous Jackie Onassis/RFK "secret love affair" publication now out. It sells, so I guess that makes it alright, so goes the thinking. Cha-ching!

None of this is to make excuses for any of their wrongdoings. Just a simple observation of how the media will give the public spotlight to any bashing buffoon, because we all know controversy and criticism sell.

James,  You’re right - that 24 hour scrutinizing of any celebrity brings out whatever they think wiull grab attention.  our celebrity culture is really beginning to wear too.

The "credible" news media has really shown their stripes these past couple of weeks.  The overload of MJ taking over top news over anything else just makes them more tabloid than news.  It really is all about the money and it just makes me realize that you can’t trust what you watch anymore.  And….as talented and entertaining MJ was, there were equally talented entertainers that passed (and are still living).  Priorities and honor are becoming a thing of the past.  I hope that after today’s memorial things will quiet down and people will move on.  Unfortunately, I think the momentum will take on another pitch for a feeding frenzy and speculation for some time.

The few little pictures we ever saw of Michael’s children, they didn’t look half black. The oldest one is very blond. But frankly, MJ’s the legal father so it doesn’t matter and everyone knows he loved them, wanted them, and the chidren love him back now. So no matter what, he’s still their father even though he might not be their biological father. There’s no point to think about this. The children knew him to be their father. If Deborah Rowe is their mother and did some kind of deal in 2006 and now wants a new deal, in the past, it not a "motherly" deal and she should be cut out forever.

The reason why Michael Jackson’s mother is better even though she’s so much older is because she withstood Joe Jackson. Out of 9 kids, so many of those kids turned out well including MJ, despite Joe Jackson’s horrible ambitions and due to MJ’s mother. But, because of her age, if she dies, a guardian better be in place.

MJ’s mother may have withstood her husband, but she didn’t prevent him from abusing her kids.  Further, unlike Diana Ross’ children, not one of the Jacksons completed any level of higher education.

I doubt any of them felt they needed a higher education when they were making a lot of money as musicians, plus, they probably didn’t have the time.

However, Randy Jackson, the youngest, the one who was too young to be part of the Jacksons is the one suffering financially today. He should have been encouraged for higher education. By that time, the older siblings had the money to send him.

Makes you wonder why the Jacksons still revere (I know why they love her) their mother when she didn’t prevent the abuse. Maybe she calmed Joe down when it got bad and the kids respect her for that. We’ll never know. But what was her option? Leave Joe and take nine children and remain in poverty? Then there wouldn’t have been the Jacksons.

Diana’s five children have turned out better even though they’re the children of three different fathers. It doesn’t appear that the youngest, Evan Ross went to college. He’s a very busy actor. But the daughters completed college and the other son is still in college. She’s certainly younger too.

Against my better judgment, I am going to assume that Al Sharpton is bringing comfort to the Jackson family. Having said that, like Liz Smith, I too am repulsed by the "reverend’s" most ungodly need for publicity.  No one can ever diminish the amazing talents of Michael Jackson but honestly, just because he saw himself as Christ-like (check out the color photo where he is virtually in the crucifix position) doesn’t mean we should validate that egocentric comparison. I found the majority of the memorial quite tasteful and very moving and my heart breaks for his mother most of all. (By the way, what kind of husband doesn’t sit next to his wife at the memorial for their dead son?  I can only assume she requested Joe Jackson sit elsewhere.)

Father Jackson and Mother Jackson no longer reside together. They are no longer a couple.

Everyone seems to be attacking Reverend Sharpton. This was not a photo opt for Rev. Sharpton. He has been a family friend and a friend of Michael Jacksons for years. He’s not some publicity seeking hound. He was ASKED by the family to deliver the eulogy. He stood with the family as because they wanted him there. Jesse Jackson thought he was going to give the eulogy. They wanted someone who was in direct contact and had a relationship with the family.

You may feel repulsed by Reverend Sharpton, however he’s  loved, admired and respected by many. He has lent a voice to POLICE BRUTALITY  AND MURDER! … He has been a voice for the voiceless, where there was none. This includes persons of all ethnicity’s. He has shined a light on dirty deeds that would’ve been swept under the rug. He’s given people the courage to speak out against racism and injustice. People no longer feel powerless and alone.

You are entitled to feel any emotion you desire, even if it has no validity!

There’ve been two public cases in N.Y.C. where two men at different times were sodomized by cops. The cops are not heroes to all people! Persons are treated differently depending on the community.

j jackson and a sharpton are just "race baiters"….give them any incident that involves a black person…and their faces will appear….just like the Duke rape scandal….they couldn’t get there fast enough to demand all the team to have their heads cut off!  What those two guys have done has set race relations back hundreds of years!!!!  sharpton’s words of mj only made people left with more disgust….and both races are coming out and saying this….

Please share your sources. I haven’t heard or read any opposing views on Rev. Sharpton except on this website and the usual bigots like peyser of the n.y. post. I watched the memorial and Reverend Al Sharpton received a standing ovation.

I think Michael was treated better in death than when he was alive. Al Sharpton is a negative person I would not want around me all becasue he associates everything with race.
