LIZ SMITH FLASH! Sheila Nevins to Be Presented Governors Award by Elaine Stritch

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Board of Governors will give its prestigious Governors Award to our own Sheila Nevins.
Liz Smith

In the history of the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences, the Board of Governors has given its prestigious Governors Award to only 15 individuals. The only female ever to receive it was the legendary Lucille Ball.

Now, on September 12 at the Los Angeles Nokia Theater, the award will be presented by actress Elaine Stritch to Sheila Nevins, President of HBO Documentary Films.

wOw’s own Sheila highly deserves the award after 21 years of distinguished participation in the Emmy competition by her acclaimed HBO unit. She has had a lengthy, multiple-award-winning career. This year alone, the dynamic Sheila is nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards – three for "The Alzheimer’s Project" and a nomination for "Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery." She has, through the years, personally amassed 54 nominations and 22 wins at the Emmy Awards.

HBO’s Richard Plepler says, "She is a genuine original in every sense of the word. We are so proud and honored that she is part of our family."

The Tony-winning actress Elaine Stritch considers it a high water mark in her own career to be handing the Governors Award to her friend Sheila, who produced another amazing documentary about Miss Stritch and her one-woman Broadway show, "Elaine Stritch at Liberty." Miss Stritch herself is up for an Emmy again this year for "outstanding guest actress in a comedy series" for "30 Rock."

Both these women have the full support and a big rooting section here at wowOwow.com. We don’t know how we ever got so lucky as to know these incredible dames!

kudos to sheila!!  my wife laurie & I watched the kennedy documentary last night on HBO.  Sheila is a co-producer.  Its one of the most moving documentaries I’ve eve seen.  I only hope that as a documentarian myself, i can direct as poignant a film about blacklisted actress Marsha Hunt that Sheila produced on Senator Ted Kennedy..roger c. memos

What a well-deserved honorfor Sheila Nevins. And what a great choice of presenter. The inimitable Ms. Stritch - truly one of a kind. No-one, and I mean NO ONE, can "sell" a number like Elaine Stritch. Should be a terrific evening all around. Congrats Sheila - hope you and Elaine Stritch paint the town red post-ceremony!

Oh My golly! I often think How can I possibly answer the things represented here. Sheilah is a queen, a princess and we are so proud of her. Miss stritch has been my idol since way back in the fifties since I first met her. Both women are just not to be compared with anyone else. I am so grateful to have been their accolate.Sitting by their footstools, loving them both. What can be better? Liz Smith.

Congratulations, Ms. Nevins. Being a military wife I was especially touched by "Section  60: Arlington National Cemetery." That was so beautifully done, and I think you for presenting something so poignant that most people never see, nor think about.

Congratulations to Sheila Nevins of WOWOWOW.  There’s one thing I’d like to add to a question Sheila posed about dying of a broken ‘heart’…..yes, it can happen.  My spouse’s Uncle died and a short year later, she died too, of a broken ‘heart’.  She was lost without her spouse.  It’s not uncommon to die in that manner.  The spouse who’s left behind, often doesn’t have the will or emotional strength to continue living and so, for whatever reason physically, they too end up dying.
