LIZ SMITH FLASH! Strictly an Opinion on the Ling/Lee Rescue

Liz Smith
While most of the world rejoiced that Bill Clinton and Al Gore and so many other dedicated people helped secure the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee from North Korea, I see my former newspaper the New York Post took an opposite stance. "Bill’s H-wood Blockbuster" they headline, writing that the "Homecoming Drama Is All About Bubba." (Well, I do believe the North Koreans demanded the presence of President Clinton as a prelude to letting these girls escape a dozen years of hard labor. Who should have gone instead, Rush Limbaugh?)

I enjoyed the ridiculous criticism against mogul Steve Bing, who donated his jet and paid the fuel bill, and the fact that the enterprise "had Hollywood written all over it." The plane landed at the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank for the girls to be reunited with their families. Maybe it should have gone someplace else less convenient to all concerned.

I love it that the Post dumps on Hollywood as if their owner Rupert Murdoch doesn’t own a lavish house there and he is invited and goes to most of the big La La Land galas and parties. He also owns a successful movie production company. Criticism that the return of Ling and Lee was partly orchestrated by the Rogers and Cowan PR Firm seems to fly in the face of Fox’s own dedicated PR mechanism. The company is repped by the greatest PR man in New York history (Howard Rubenstein) with all the benefits that engenders.

Talk about the mote in somebody’s eye! So you don’t like Bill Clinton and his Hollywood pals. Your own Hollywood and PR pals are preferable. And who have they saved from 12 years of hard labor lately?

I read something similar this morning and thought how sad that such a heartwarming story was overshadowed by the fact that Bing , close buddy and big Democratic contributer, supplied that plane.  The FAA went to much trouble as well to clear air traffic to bring these young women home, since US aircraft is not alllowed to land in North Korea.

It matters not what kind of spin anyone wants to put on this and the players involved, and there were many.  Former President Clinton made a successful political foray into North Korea with approval and coordination from the current administration.

This role was perfect for Bill Clinton , and he executed it well.  If the homecoming has Bubba crowing a bit, then he deserves it.

Don’t know if you watch the Daily Show with Jon Stewart — it is a riot.   ANYWAY……..last night referencing Clinton’s successful trip to bring home the two ladies who had been sentenced to 12 years of hard labor in NK……..he said, it seems for some in this country — no success is good enough……….that for them hearing babies laugh — sounds like kittens drowning.

Oh, please, Liz you’ve been around long enough to realize that beneath the "diplomatic coup" was a "pr coup" and many of us who have also been around long enough realize this is just another indication of how we are watching the "Hillary 2012" presidential campaign begin in earnest.  "Obama didn’t go to North Korea. Bill did."  And once again we will be offered the "two-fer."

And now nice to see that Bill and Al are best of friends again. At least for the cameras. Which makes everyone wonder what Al’s angle is. Only his publicist knows for sure. Or his political advisor.

Baby Snooks, just to bring you up-to-date……Al owns the broadcasting company employing Ling & Lee as reporters.  I imagine he was happy to have his employees back in the US.  We all were.

I agree with both of you. Haven’t we had enough Bill-bashing? I wonder if these naysayers would have had a different take on the issue if one of their children had been imprisoned instead of Ling and Lee.  Hmmm….

The journalists are home. This could have turned into a very nasty incident. If the North Koreans had asked for Mickey Mouse somebody had better put on a damn costume and got their butts to North Korea and picked up those young ladies. Welcome Home!

LC…Precisely!  Al Gore has a few hundred million laying around: he could have also supplied a plane. But NK didn’t want any part of Al Gore.  It was Bill Clinton they wanted, and Bill they got.  He carried no message from Obama, stuck to his script, and got the two women out as fast as possible.  A fairy tale ending that should not give anyone a raw rub, but there will always be the naysayers.

Maggie…they wanted the last American President who treated them with some semblance of diplomatic respect…Al Gore was the vice president…also the Koreans accused the women of spying and they worked for Al Gore’s company…so he was never a real choice.

Exactly right. The North Koreans think Clinton is right up there with their thousand balloon ceremonies. To watch the journalist who, climbing down the steps of the plane, open mouthed from crying, to take her child into her arms made me weep. To be home, to be welcomed by loved ones, to be safe is overwhelming, but to wrap your child in your arms after months of being imprisoned, not knowing whether you’ll ever get out has got to be like a miracle.

Clinton, by the way, is not only popular with the North Koreans, but Europeans love him.

The sickness comes by way of Limbaugh who was wondering whether Bill hit on the two women. Rush feeds the foul once again.

Ofcourse, Phyllis: The North Koreans LOVE Bill, he gave them the means to make "the bomb".

Thank you, Victoria.  The far right tried to lay some ground work that insinuated Al Gore was not interested or involved.  He kept his mouth shut because he was.  I’m guessing he is sleeping far better tonight, as are many friends and family and even total strangers of these two young women.

Oh, this is why some people are writing comments here about how Al Gore had a private agenda that we didn’t know about…..when we really DID know that he was the journalist’s employer.  I was wondering where all this was coming from.  Thanks for filling in the missing links to misinformation.

You nailed it, Victoria…"the last American President who treated them with some semblance of diplomatic respect".  As I watched the news (evening the release was announced) I felt the same way.  I do believe only Bill Clinton could have secured their release.  Funny how he is so respected and liked everywhere but here.  At least…with this ex-President and years from now when he is long gone and a dozen kiss-and-tell books hit the shelves…perhaps the only surprirse will be just how much this man was liked around the globe.  Unlike many others before him, his personal life and quirks won’t be…that much we all already know but he was and is a good ambassador.  (And no…I never voted for him!)
