Liz Smith's 'Freedom' Park

Liz Smith

My favorite park in the world is Forrest Park in Fort Worth, TX, where I spent my child hood, unsupervised, riding my bike, strolling along the zoo, riding the electric train and listening to the lion’s roar. You could hear them all the way across town.

This park gave me and my brothers a freedom to experiment, make our own mistakes and grow up unfettered. I guess it couldn’t happen to a child these days.

And I greet New York’s new park, the High Line, with great pleasure as I love parks worldwide including France’s Bois de Bologne, which is my favorite in Europe.

when I was teen and up to the day I left for the Navy my favorite place in the entire world is Niagara Falls.

I’d take a bus to get there and when I got my license that is the one place I’d go.  I painted there, drew pic of the scenery and took mega pictures.

When I had the chance to show my children this wonder it soon became one of their favorite places to visit.

What I find amazing is that so many Western New Yorkers have never been to the falls.

Yes, Liz Smith, we all have special memories from Forrest Park…and Forrest Park remains well-maintained, oft visited. The trees have become only more majestic, and the families sitting under them reflect a more diverse Fort Worth.

My friends and I ran all around Forrest Park and then attacked the Botanical Gardens in some misguided attempt to catch butterflies for biology class.  Thankfully, none of us succeeded and spent a good deal of the time chasing one another with the nets, which was all terribly funny then and a darn good memory now.

Peace and grace, Liz Smith
