Liz Smith Gets 'Behind' Sports

Liz Smith
I can’t get all heated up about anything to do with sports except when a horse like Barbaro breaks a leg running. I don’t care who takes steroids. I am just not interested, though I do enjoy looking at athletes like Michael Phelps in the almost altogether. And I like watching pro football the same way I watch ballet. All those male behinds to be patted.

Last year, one of my students gave a terrific speech about new sports technologies. It was a revelation to me, since, like Liz, I tend not to pay a lot of attention to most sports (except the Yankees). Learning about specially tinted contacts that enhance a baseball or lacrosse player’s ability to track the ball against the sun glare and sky was fascinating. Seeing the new computer-designed, customized football helmets that provide MUCH more protection and field of vision was amazing. Examining one of those incredible (and - I think, currently banned) competitive swimsuits that cut down on "drag" and increase speed was like a trip into Jetson’s land! There are golf clubs with computer chips. There are amazing technologies in basketball shoes … unreal! And then there are the performance-enhancing drugs. The whole thing sort of puts me in mind of sci-fi stories about genetically-enhanced athletes, androids and so on competing in galactic Olympics. Are we headed to a future where this will be a reality? (I’ll bet Philip K. Dick is chuckling somewhere in the universe.)
