Liz Smith: Whoopi Goldberg's Super-Smart 'Head Games' (Video)

Also from Our Gossip Girl: Michael Bublé’s fans have ‘Crazy Love’ for him … Showbiz offers up its neck to vampires.

"Money talks – the only conversation worth hearing when times are bad," said Fred Allen during the Great Depression.

Nobody pushes Barbra Streisand around, but then there is Michael Bublé. (Pronounced boob-blay; for those few who might be new to his charms.)

His "Crazy Love" album just hit No. 1 on Billboard, beating out the greatest star by far, and also the legendary rock band KISS. (These latter guys are, incredibly, still making music that their fans find relevant.)

Tuesday night, Michael, his Warner Records press rep Liz Rosenberg, and a gaggle of Bublé media friends and fans gathered at the famous Italian eatery Patsy’s in Manhattan to sweat out the imminent news that Michael had hit the top spot. It was like the old days of waiting for the Broadway first night New York Times review at Sardi’s. Exciting!

Among the little throng – People magazine’s Deputy Managing Editor Peter CastroKC Baker, who writes for the mag … NBC’s Marianne Haggerty and Aretha MarshallCBS Sunday Morning’s Ramon Parkins … Clear Channel’s Zena BurnsMaxim magazine’s Joe Levy, Lite-FM NY’s program director Chris Conley. (Mr. Conley bears a strong resemblance to 007’s Daniel Craig!)

There was no assurance that Michael would prevail, so nail-biting tension accompanied the pasta, the meatballs, the mozzarella, tomatoes, the prosciutto, the chicken contadina, the shrimps wrapped in bacon, the stuffed artichokes. Even Michael, who has dieted himself down to a slender, well-toned shadow of his former huskier self, ate heartily and nervously. After all, would it be possible to usurp Miss Streisand from her place at the top of the chart?

When word came, via Ms. Rosenberg’s cell phone, Michael leapt to his feet and said, "Finally, I’m on top of Barbra!" Then he left the room to call his mother in Canada. When he came back, more than a little misty-eyed, he thanked all those present. Actually, he hugged all present, which was a hell of a maneuver in a confined space, the intimate upstairs backroom of Patsy’s. Not that anyone complained about being up close and huggy with Bublé.

I have always had a tender spot in my heart for Michael; he serenaded me at my 80th birthday, on the cusp of his great career.

Singing for octogenarians? It can’t hurt.

A nugget of gossip was picked up this night. Too bad it has to be blind. The talk of several tables was that the wealthy father of a young, now wildly successful singer, bought up about 80,000 copies of her first CD, putting it over the edge as a hit.

Daddy doesn’t have to do this anymore, but baby will always be grateful.

Oh, and what have been the big sellers for People magazine this year, so far? The death issues, alas – Michael Jackson, Patrick Swayze. And even more alas, the Gosselins. The above-mentioned Peter Castro shrugged when this info caused a massive flinch at his table: "Hey, they sell!"

Reminder! The great TV guy Don Hewitt of "60 Minutes" fame will be memorialized at 11 AM, Monday, in the space of Jazz at Lincoln Center. The speakers should be fascinating because Don was quite a character.

I disagree…He is a great comic light, and has the knowledge to pulloff hosting a show about knowledge that is based in scientific truths in a way that also brings humor and makes that knowledge something fun and attainable to many.

Whoop, I watch you every day on the View and always get a kick out of the fact that you and I think so much alike and seem to have the same "view".  You make a wonderful moderator and they are very blessed to have you.  I don’t think it’s a small coincidence that they had been "emmy" free until after your arrival.  How you manage to keep juggling all the balls that you do with only 24 hours in a day is nothing short of amazing and inspiring.  I watched the clip of Head Games and loved it.  I’m all for anything that is fun and educational.  I liked your choice of host, Greg Proust, but after watching the clip I’m left racking my brain trying to place what I’ve seen him in before.  I hope your latest endevour turns out to be a hit, I know I’ll do my part and watch.  Oh yea, thanks for introducing me to wowowow.com.  It’s a wonderful collaborative effort by such inspiring women!

I hope for people like me (no cable)  the show will be available on the Web. I went to the Science Channel website and they have >1 minute clips, but not the whole show. I’ll keep checking it, though, and Hulu, too, just in case …

Anything with Whoopie is always a delight.

Her ability with People is amazing.  I love her humorous control when she’s a little put off…………

The way she turns and sits back with the little smirk on her face….. I love it.  My disability keeps me home a lot lately, it’s so nice to have Whoopie come into my home via The View everyday. I love her humor, but I think what I like the most about Whoopie is her intelligence.

I’m looking forward to this new show.  I hope a day doesn’t go by that I don’t have the opportunity to learn something….

My Motto…….."Life is an Adventure, enjoy the Journey"

I should add…….Learn, learn, learn.  Sure makes the Journey more interesting.

Thanks Whoopie for all you give to the World.

Re Whoopi Goldberg and her new show, I jut can’t do it.  I felt so disappointed when she, angry, chimed in on the Roman Polanski thing - saying "It wasn’t rape-rape."

I’m only one person so my absence won’t be felt, but I’ve had a career in science. Whoopi hosting a science game is a joke. Science is based on truth, reproducible truth, so why put it in the hands of the opinionated.

I suspect you let a lot of people down, Whoopi. Maybe the game’s over.

Elinor, Whoopi isn’t the host of the show, she’s the producer. The guy with too much hair and bounce is the host.

I’m disappointed that the only time the hostesses show up here is to promote a new show but rarely to see how wOw is actually doing and who is actually commenting. I like ya Whoops and good luck with your new show, but I am feeling betrayed by you and the rest of the ‘hostesses’ ( marlo, lily, jane, etc ) here. It is like this is just a commercial venture for you all but your hearts, minds and energy are elsewhere.
