Liz Smith: Perez Hilton Punched, GLAAD Denounces Hate Speak – Selectively

"They blame him who talks too much; they blame him who is silent; and they also blame him who speaks little," goes the Buddhist poem.

Our clever friend Perez Hilton was punched in the face the other night when he had a bit of a to-do with members of the Black Eyed Peas band. The openly gay Mr. Hilton then unwisely called someone in the band entourage – a "faggot." The matter is now in the hands of the law.
But GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, is demanding that Hilton apologize for using an anti-gay slur. They say this "feeds the climate of hatred and intolerance."
Well, OK – sure. But this got me thinking. Did GLAAD rear up and ask Perez Hilton to apologize to the conservative beauty queen Carrie Prejean when the former "Miss California" answered pageant judge Hilton’s question about gay marriage? At that time, Perez referred to Prejean as a "bitch" and a "dumb cunt."
Forget what may be your opinion and/or mine about Miss Prejean, who has now found her voice and a forum for speaking out against gay marriage. Did she deserve to be so outrageously and viciously insulted even if millions did not agree with her? Did GLAAD have anything to say back then? Did it bother to correct Perez Hilton?

Since climates of hatred and intolerance and plain old uncivilized public discourse were on my mind, my office called GLAAD. They were stunned at the suggestion they should have rebuked Perez Hilton for his ugly attack on Ms. Prejean. "We are the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation; we defend gays and lesbians!"
"OK," said we, "but don’t you think it might have been excellent PR to denounce all hate talk, even by gays against those who don’t approve of them? Don’t you want to make the gay community look tolerant and civilized and high-minded when it comes to others with whom it disagrees?"
GLAAD’s spokesperson said again, "We are the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation; we defend gays and lesbians!" Well, as a woman, I do get it. It’s "selective denunciation" GLAAD is interested in.
As for Perez. He is a brilliant self-created gossip, entertainer and sarcastic philosopher when it comes to celebrity. (I was impressed when I met him, though his website is way over-the-top!) But he’ll do better to tame his tongue when it comes to public insults.

Cinda Firestone, grandchild of old Harvey and family inheritor of automobile tire millions, has gone from social circles right to humanitarian protests and even jail cells. She is distinguished for directing and producing the powerful documentary "Attica," all about the outrageous riot that made history in the infamous New York state prison.
"Attica" will have a 35th anniversary showing in Brooklyn at BAM on July 4. And Cinda is now busy penning her life story, which she’ll call From Debutante to Attica.
Just for fun, she is also writing the book and lyrics for the upcoming Broadway musical "Family Fortune," to be produced by her husband, Manny Fox. Mr. Fox is the guy who brought to the Great White Way the legendary 1981 Duke Ellington musical "Sophisticated Ladies."

Honestly speaking, Perez Hilton does not get any sympathy vote from me. If he got punched on the face is because he asked for it. He can not go around calling people names and pushing his beliefs and lifestyle on people, then, turn around and expect to be respected. He basically destroyed Ms. Prejean for speaking her mind. Perez did not like what he heard from her but he did not welcome such honest response and eventually took the crown away from Ms. Prejean. Since when it is a crime to speak your mind in America. Now, will Perez bashed me because I don’t share his sorry predicament of being punched on the face as a resort of his uncivilized behavior?
I do know lots people who are gay but those people acts and behave in a civilized and professional manner at all times. Perez is obviously hungry for attention and notoriety to achieve fame in Hollywood.
I am glad I did not enter the Ms. USA contest for I would have responded the same way Ms. Prejean handled the question from Perez.
As to the incident with punching, Perez, you are a man, so when you insulted another man, the primal instinct is that the macho man will give it to you across the lips. I am glad is it not Mike Tyson you insulted or else it would have been much worse. Perez, please learn how to behave around people.
That’s the pot calling the kettle black, isn’t it? [Whoops - don’t read anything into the word "black," please.]
My Admin Asst has two daughters who are the source of all celebrity gossip. [Their mother claims she must have taken the wrong babies home from the hospital.] The way it was explained to me was:
1 - Fergie [a Black-Eyed Pea] approached Hilton about his recent criticism of the BEP’s new album.
2 - After the awards at some club Will,I.Am [another BEP] approached Hilton. Hilton called him a faggot jitsu. [Don’t ask em what it means.]
3 - The BEP’s manager, Molino, and their security guards assaulted Hilton.
4 - Hilton tweeted for help instead of calling 911.
5 - Molino has been charged with assault. He already is on probation for DUI.
6 - Somehow John Mayer got in the foray and admonished Hilton to never call a black dude a "faggot jitsu." [What it means, I don’t know.]
At least that’s how I understand the story.
And this crap makes national headlines? Give me a break. I say throw them all in the dungeon and take away their tweety-twitters.
Andrea - you gave me a good laugh.
Liz - When I can get to wow to read, I always love your pages. Have been busy reinventing my work life and helping friends in hospitals so haven’t been here as much and I have missed your columns. Thank you for being you.
Frannie Em,
Who, ME?????? Wow, I get more laughs when my brain turns to mush late at night. How do you like that.
I just think it’s great that you’re giving of yourself and making your friends a priority. When it comes right down to it, they’re priceless. So thank you for being YOU.
Andrea, I totally agree! This is actually "pure crap" that occupies the news. Who cares that a gay person calls someone a "faggot?" I really don’t think anyone cares. These lame Hollywood misfits serve absolutely no useful purpose in society.
deber B….hollywood misfits have lives too…last time I looked
Got it? boy, its hard work when folks don’t have a clue how to translate pop culture.
Victoria J,
If being able to translate pop culture was my only claim to fame I’d hang my head in shame. [And if you read my post, I got the story third or fourth-hand.]
I guess Mr. Hilton found out the hard way that not everyone appreciates his opinions. But hey, it got him in the headlines yet again; that’s what his game is all about, so he should thank TBP manager. ;-p
