Liz Smith Remembers the 'Good Old Days' of Department Stores

Liz Smith

In the good old days I just loved Lord & Taylor, Bonwit Teller, Saks, Best & Co, Bergdorf and Henri Bendel. And I still love the ones that are left. But I have to confess, I seldom go in a department store now, and when I do, it’s usually Saks, which is convenient. And I go to the hairdresser Vincent there. I like to glide around in Barneys surveying the outrageous clothes and prices. But I wouldn’t say I "shop" there. Most of my nicer things are selected for me by the fabulous people at Carlisle, which is appointment only. A wonderful friend of mine does most of my "shopping" there and she has better taste than I do. If I really want to get glamorous and special, I go to my old pal Jackie Rogers with her new shop on Madison Ave. at 66th street and she will make me look special almost overnight. And now and then I have to look "special" for one of my charities and fund-raising.

I loved the smell of the store and the candy counter they had at GFox in Hartford.  That is gone now.

Brock’s in Bakersfield, California. The smell of the lunch room - so good, and the scent of cosmetic counter when you went in.  Mmmmmmm.  They sold to big chain, which was like shopping in a warehouse.

Don’t forget DePina department store near Best & Co on Fifth Avenue. They had beautiful coats and lingerie, for young girls, that could be monogrammed.  There were sweet little short sleeved blouses with Peter Pan collars and a wide array of kilt skirts, as we called them. I remember that being fitted for clothes there made me feel special. Afterwards, my grandmother would take me to the lovely Women’s Exchange for a scrumptious lunch consisting of an individual cheese souffle followed by fresh deep dish peach pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

I remember both stores well, Didi! Each fall, one of the highlights was the trip my mother and I would take to Best & Co. to get a coat for me: usually always a princess-style with a velvet collar. And a nice pleated skirt, and MAYBE, if the budget permitted, a velvet holiday dress. Then we would go to Schrafft’s for lunch. Oh, those special memories! I also have wonderful memories of the Lord and Taylor store in Westchester County, where my Uncle Buddy was a manager. We’d do some shopping and then meet Uncle B. in The Birdcage restaurant for a snack, usually the Southern Ham and Cheese Biscuit plate and a vanilla coke. And I also remember Gimbels in White Plains, where my grandmother went to stock up on her favorite cotton nightgowns. It had an upper bacony where the hat department was located, and it was a never-ending source of amusement for me to sit and watch the ladies trying on the frothy, flowery hats that the store seemed to specialize in. When I became a buyer and department manager in a small, family-owned department store in Mt. Kisco, New York, I got to experience life on the other side of the counter, and it was perhaps one of the most important pieces of education I ever received. Learning how to sell in a way that was respectful of our customers was part of the training at the store, and the words "full-service" really meant something.

Yes, those grey flannel pleated skirts!  How could I have forgotten? but I always wanted the kilt with the safety pin, which is why I remember them better.

You and me both, Lindy. I am from that area(CT). I just moved to MA. I used to go to G.Fox Mall as a kid. I loved just wheeling around.
