Liz Smith Recalls Intimate Details of Her Interview With Ivana Trump During the Donald Divorce
My most memorable interview moment? It was probably standing in a suite in the Plaza Hotel where I had been summoned by Ivana Trump to hear that her husband Donald wanted a divorce and was having an affair with another woman and she had even resorted to plastic surgery to be more pleasing to Donald, to no avail. She wept on my shoulder and I advised her to get into therapy and get over Donald and I also got the name of her PR man, John Scanlon, and her famous lawyer, Michael Kennedy, and we were off and running. In the end, the story of the Trumps was just a tale of rich people and money. But it was headlines while it lasted.
That was the beginning of a "beautiful friendship" in a scandalous tabloid story that ran on the front page for three months and that I put on the air over WNBC every broadcast. It made me very well-known and me and gossip ended up on the cover of Time magazine.
I have to add here, as well, that every time I encountered Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, I had a grand interview moment. I talked with them together and separately in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Rome and Leningrad. They were newsmakers extraordinary, in a class by themselves as stars and characters and randy individuals. They knew who they were!

I really never give thought to Donald Trump, except I hope he and his family are well. (I honestly cannot conceive of great wealth..it never was a part of my life.)..What I am very pleased about is that Liz is back from hiatus and I will be able to receive alerts on her postings. Stay well, Liz!
