Liz Smith: Renée Zellweger – Looking for Intelligence, Passion, Light and Laughter (Good Luck!) (Video)

Also from Our Gossip Girl: Wanda Sykes – Why? … Penélope Cruz – a big deal at Cannes.

“I am always amazed by Diane Sawyer; she is so elegant and manages to pull it together at three o’clock AM every day. Hillary Clinton is great. Even in countries where women are not considered contemporaries, she walks into a room and speaks with such authority. And of course there’s Michelle Obama – nothing about her is disingenuous. I’m thrilled she’s out there as the face of American women.” That is the adorable Renée Zellweger talking about who’s got glamour to Glamour magazine. Renée is on the cover, and although it’s a pretty picture, I don’t know if I’d recognize my friend Renée, were it not for the coverline: “Renée!” (The shots inside the mag are not so overlit, and look more like the unique Miss Z.)

Renée also tells what she looks for in a man: “I’m attracted to intelligence and creativity and passion – and not necessarily the romantic kind. I want to learn from someone who is greedy for information and light and laughter and the whole world. Someone who celebrates their days and finds inspiration in what other people accomplish.”

Miss Z. was recently linked with newsman Dan Abrams. But I hear that has palled. Well, Renee wants a lot – the light and laughter thing alone must be daunting! Not to mention finding a fellow celeb who “celebrates what other people accomplish.” Most of the people Renée runs into are busy contemplating their own famous, well-toned navels. It’s hard to be real in an unreal world.

I love it that Kate Winslet now tops Glamour’s list of the “most glamorous.”

This probably tickles Kate as well. She goes around down in the Village in New York totally unrecognized, looking like any house frau lugging baby strollers. She insists she is angry even when the press dubs her “middle class,” insisting she is working class and raised up in a poor acting family. But Glamour says she’s “the most” just because she finally won the Oscar and didn’t trip over herself going up the stairs. True glamour is in short supply these days.

I caught “Monster-in-Law” the other night, and thought again what terrific, funny chemistry Wanda Sykes had with Jane Fonda, trying to dissuade Jane from tormenting Jennifer Lopez. This is a movie that definitely screams for a sequel.

Sykes played Fonda’s acerbic secretary in the great tradition of all acerbic secretaries who steal movies out from under the star – I’m thinking Thelma Ritter in “All About Eve.”

So now Wanda is in hot water because of quips about Rush Limbaugh at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Did Wanda go “too far”? It seems to me that every year at this event somebody goes too far. And, in our current nonstop cable “news” coverage, that screwup gets play. So Ms. Sykes is having her 48 hours of hot scrutiny.

Was she inappropriate? In a political world where our current president is still – seriously, no jokes – referred to as “a friend to terrorists,” as “not an American citizen” and as a “danger” to the USA, I’d put her remarks in that context. (Yet I don’t think it’s smart to ever bring 9/11 into a comedic monologue.) Not to mention the fact that at the last Correspondents’ Dinner, George W. Bush joked about not finding any WMDs in Iraq. Hilarious! More than 4,000 American soldiers died in Iraq and more than 100,000 innocent Iraqis died.

But why, even in the name of humor, invite a barrage of criticism that will land right on top of President Obama, a man whom I assume Ms. Sykes supports and voted for? Does anybody ever think before they speak? Is Wanda right now thinking, “Oh, I made trouble for the president, I wish I hadn’t.”

Watch Wanda Sykes’s at the White House Correspondents Dinner:

Considering that she’s probably had ten movie and TV offers, I doubt it. She has incited the usual fake media hysteria, and real partisan hypocrisy.

No Wanda S was not inappropriate….it was a roast and GWB was by far the most outrageous….disgusting…making jokes at the expense of those killed for his knowingly phony WMD….and making that wretched film for the roast with him running around looking for them under the Oval Office desk, rug, etc. THAT was DISGUSTING. Wanda S. is NOTHING by comparison.

"I caught “Monster-in-Law” the other night, and thought again whatterrific, funny chemistry Wanda Sykes had with Jane Fonda, trying to dissuade Jane from tormenting Jennifer Lopez. This is a movie that definitely screams for a sequel."   So TRUE. That is a really funny film…..would love to see a sequel.

Right. It was a roast. You get away with a lot at a roast.

A roast is just that a roast.  If they didn’t want edgy they shouldn’t have asked her to perform.  They knew ahead of time what kind of comic she is.

Oh My God, what are people thinking?  Sykes is a comic, she’s always edgy.  Her delivery is acerbic and sarcastic.  What did they choose Sykes for if they wanted Mary Poppins.  I’m so, so tired of the hypocrisy of politicians and media.  People are dying in wars we shouldn’t be in.  But a comics remarks are getting front page space.  "Leave Wanda alone".  If you want to chastise or berate people for what they say, how about those un-american remarks made by Rush, Newt, Cheney???  Let’s leave the comics out of our outrage and deal with the real culprits. I agree with Christie S.  a roast is a roast, not a memorial.

Wanda Sykes was really enjoying being SMUG. It wasn’t very pretty, but she was getting a real boot out of it. I’m glad someone was entertained

I sometimes wonder about single movie stars like Renee. or single female stars I should say. How hard it would be. I was single 11 years before I met my husband. Part of it is that as an adult it’s just often tough to meet people period. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be someone who probably gets crazy fan male from weirdo men all the time. you’re not gonna let just any guy walk up and say hi in those circumstances. Teh more insulated you are the harder it’s got to be. Not to mention you’ve then got all of this "stuff" to overcome the minute you meet anyone. their preconceived ideas about how sexy you are or whatever. and then the big one…. men are trophy hunters. to be a Renee or a Jennifer Aniston (big big trophies)… you’d have to be so careful. Can’t even imagine how much it would suck.

There will not be sweet talk of puppies and rainbows at any roast.  They knew exactly what Wanda Sykes is about.  And so the President laughed.  Oh, the horror!  What should we read into that?  Is he going to invade Canada or Mexico?  Surely that laugh reveals a sinister motive.

The righteous hysteria over this entire event is just silly and way over blown.

Exactly.  Thanks for saying that.

I’m not exactly getting all self-righteous here but I actually do think Wanda Sykes crossed the line - a few times.  Given the typical nature of her humor, her I’ve never understood why she is so sought after to voice cartoon characters either.  Yes, I realize this was a roast and this sort of thing is not unheard of at roasts .  I’m not a big fan of that whole genre in general.  But I think, when in the presence of the President, have enough class to tone it down a notch.

I just watched the complete Sykes speech.  Nothing wrong with it.  That’s Wanda’s style, which I have always loved.  Her comments about Hannity, Limbaugh, Bush, Cheney, Texas & the Queen, etc. were so clever.  This is a most intelligent & well-informed woman.  Her remarks about Mrs. Obama patting Queen Elizabeth on the back were very funny, but we all know that the Queen made the first move in the gesture.  That said somethingto us as to her feelings toward our new administration.  It could be, "what a relief that the other guy is gone"! :))

The whole thing is so overblown.  What saddens me is that we seem to have lost our collective sense of humor.  Roasts are meant to be edgy and over the top and yes the nipples thing was hilarious.

No need to include 9/11 into the hilarity of the evening. It remains a sensitive topic, especially to those it has affected directly. There are so many other topics to poke fun of and Wanda Sykes was brilliant in  doing just that. Though people snickered at the Limbaugh remark, I think they felt that they were on the spot, as the President did when the cameras were focused on him. Even Sykes saying, "You are laughing on the inside" was in bad taste, realizing that even she went out on a limb with that one. Yes, I know this was a roast but common sense should dictate what to admit and what to omit.

I love Wanda Sykes best, of all the funny ladies on TV now. I’ve seen Monster-In-Law a few times and still laugh. I also watch her in New Adventures of Old Christine when I catch it. I’ve watched many a roasts and this one was clean compared to the rest. That’s why they are usually shown on certain channels, and still bleep out words.

This is one of those things that will be talked about until the next thing happens on TV….lol

I loved the Wanda Sykes roast. What she said about Rush Limbaugh is mild compared to what he says often about others and he was right not to comment. What was said about 9/11 was probably because we are hearing way to much of Dick Cheney’s take on our security since he has left the Vice Presidency.  Go Away Dick.

Renee is refreshing and original in a cookie cutter profession.   Kate, also is a beautiful and smart woman.
