Liz Smith: Sarah Palin's Ex-Almost-Son-in-Law From Hell

Also from Our Gossip Girl: Everybody ‘Precious’ in the Hamptons … And can there be ‘Prime Suspect’ with prime Helen Mirren?

"I will not enter into a public feud with Madame Callas, since I am aware she has a far greater competence at that sort of thing than I have," said opera’s Rudolf Bing of the combative diva many years ago.

Levi Johnston – are you listening?

***

Don’t kill me here on this eve of the Labor Day weekend, but I am actually beginning to feel a bit sorry for Sarah Palin. At least in the matter of her estranged, almost-son-in-law Levi Johnston. This kid just can’t keep his mouth shut. He is now bent on his future career in public and considering taking his pants off for Playgirl.

As you probably know, Levi has given a big interview to Vanity Fair, in which he says – among other things – that the ex-governor of Alaska wanted to keep her daughter Bristol’s pregnancy a secret. And, after the baby was born, adopt it as her own.

This tale, of course, plays negatively for Sarah Palin’s public image, her immediate legend, if you will. All of which is a mix of fact and fiction, propagated by her, her champions and her enemies. She is pal-ing around with the bitch goddess, Fame.

But people will believe what they want to believe. Like a big movie star, Sarah now inhabits a world both cosseted and brutally exposed, removed from reality in many basic ways. She is a creature of her handlers and of us – we who compulsively still look in on her.

That said, Sarah wouldn’t have been the first mother in history to hope to protect a teenage daughter. This happens in lots of towns, big and little. And rumor goes that it has happened a few times in Hollywood, to famous stars and offspring. I just don’t see the wish to protect a teenage child as terribly evil or Machiavellian. Sarah Palin could play her well-worn "Good Mom" card and even I would buy it. It’s very "Peyton Place.

***

Levi keeps talking about how he loves his child and all that, but he is on the fast track to not seeing the kid at all if he continues as of now. He complains he doesn’t see enough of his baby boy. (Pose for Playgirl, you guy, and find out how much more daddy-time you get.)

Honestly, we can’t thank Sen. John McCain enough for introducing us to this snow-bound, low-rent version of "God’s Little Acre." It’s been fun.

That said, Levi Johnston looked totally out of his element out on the town with comic Kathy Griffin a few weeks ago. Then he was interviewed by Larry King and it turned into an hour of Larry’s trying to get blood from a stone.

This boy is attractive in a soon-to-be-doughy way and he has a sweet manner, but I don’t think Bristol tossed away endless nights of effervescent conversation when she broke up with him.

Now, her mother is nobody to mess with. There is a Medusa behind those Foster Grants; an atmosphere of Faye Dunaway barking in "Mommie Dearest" – "Don’t fuck with me, fellas. This ain’t my first time at the rodeo!"

After reading all these posts, I decided to post as well. I think that Beverly and Martha summed up with what I wanted to say.

For those who continue to attack, harass, exhibit jealous hissy fits or who fail to grasp the concept that women can be Independent or Republican (and that does include Latinos, Asians etc….for some reason fellow minorities will want to put you in the "Dem Party box for life category")…all I have to say is look at your own plate, look at your own life and take responsibility for yourself.

If you all were truly happy with yourself why would you conduct yourself to this level exhibited by this thread? Why would you as Beverly Raymond stated "kill off your own?"

If this thread exhibits being a "liberal" then baby I don’t need the hate or anger.

I’ll be with those who want the love, undertstanding and accept the individual. That’s a true independent. God Bless America ladies.

An ‘Independent’ is someone who votes the same most if not all the time, but doesn’t want to admit it and thinks "Independent" sounds better.

That’s "understanding". LOL and I do mean that.

personnally i am getting sick of these people that want you to believe that they are "average joe’s" and when the cameras go on they turn into raving maniacs.  are there REALLY that many stupid people out there?  the only thing worse would be for Palin to sign on for a reality show… or is she in one now?  blah blah blah

Donna this is a site where no one knows me therefore I was venting so don’t judge.  You have no idea what my son in law has done so I pray to god that my Grandchildren have our 50%.  As for education I have a masters degree therefore I know enough not to put my Grandchildren in harms way.  You insult me with your judgement without real facts.  Again it’s a true opinion of mine and since you don’t know me mind your business.

Excuse me, but Palin did a perfectly lousy job "protecting" her daughter dragging her into the convention spotlight at the onset.  We wouldn’t know Johnston at all had not Palin dragged him in front of the TV cameras, posing as the all American family.  All his tattling is divine retribution in my opinion.

Your opinion of the Palins and the Obamas depends on how much they showcase their family? The Palins and Obamas did not “drag” their daughters anywhere - if they did, they’d likely be arrested.

Note to self: don’t be imagistic  on this website. They can’t understand anything but the literal.

Susan… I learned that a long time ago, don’t try sarcasm either… goes right over the head.

For all of you who think that VF has sunk to new levels.  The public demands to "know" what’s going on in these peoples lives.  Look at the circulation numbers for People, Us, In Touch and VF.  Reader’s Digest is a better, more informative publication and they recently filed for bankruptcy restructuring.  What does that tell you about our society?  It will change when the public steers its buying power to more substantive reading material.  I for one could care less about Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Sarah Palin and Jon and Kate Gosselin.  I don’t contribute to their pockets or their misery.

It seems to me that the Palins have taken this man boy in and then rejected him by spiting him out of the "family" that includes his young son.  I have a feeling that the Palins are just as much to blame for all this drama as Levi is.

I say AMEN to Dona and Janna S.  The attempt to paint the Palin family —at the Republican Convention in 2008 — as a tad flawed, but still "wholesome" and "exemplary", was the height of hypocrisy.  I, for one, am glad that young Levi is telling it like "HE" sees it.  Why shouldn’t he?  As someone else has already said, he has been used and abused and then rejected and spit out as a "prop" in the play of the Almost-Perfect Palin Family and the GOP.

I am not at all surprised by what he is revealing.  As a mother and an attorney, my first reaction to the "story" of Sarah Palin was, "If she has 5 kids and is really working as the Governor of Alaska", then she is not doing one or both of those jobs very well.  I figured that Bristol got pregnant so that she could be responsible for only one child, and not the rest of her mother’s children.  Marisa L.

You’ve probably hit on something there Maria as far as Bristol not wanting to be responsible for the rest of her parent’s children.

Levi has NO reason to lie and…I would think that Vanity Fair would know whether they were being conned, n’est par?! It’s obvious to me that Bristol’s social/morals (religious) aren’t her mother’s, else, why would Bristol be having a sexual relationship when she and Levi were a couple. It’s called hormones. Sarah and Todd could have made their daughter wear one of those virgin-until-marriage-rings, Promise rings they’re called in the Southern states and other equally religiously moral states. Yes, Levi got her pregnant and maybe neither was using birth control. Again, I guess Mama Palin didn’t tell Bristol about sex and to wait until marriage.  She did get pregnant, end of.  :)

Had Sarah adopted Bristol’s son, that would have made Tripp/Trigg her legal brother as well as her son.  That’s an interesting family dynamic.

It could be that Sarah and Todd DON’T want their former SIL-to-be, to see his child because Sarah and/or Bristol don’t want him to be a part of their lives.

Does Levi having been interviewed for and by VANITY FAIR, mean that Levi’s agent INSISTED he go and do the interview??

As for Levi "going out on the town" with Kathy Griffin…I listened to some of that and also heard Levi’s response to some of Kathy’s questions.  He didn’t seem that disappointed to be seen with her.

Same with his interview on LKL….if he was approached and said yes, well, we know he was on.  I’m sure he could have turned it down…had he wanted to, unless of course, he answers to his agent’s advice.

Their break-up…I believe that that was an either/or situation where Bristol decided she didn’t want to be married or….it was because of Mama Palin’s Srs. influence.  I guess Sarah Palin’s "family values" (religious morals) didn’t quite convince Bristol not to get involved with her boyfriend. Plus, what about Sarah’s public persona? I’m not blaming Bristol here.  She’s a sexual human being, she had a boyfriend and…she got pregnant.  Mother Palin….deal with it, even though you’re a devout christian and a Rep. you’re oldest daughter getting pregnant…that doesn’t and wouldn’t sit well with those whose votes you were out there stumping for.  It’s inconvenient for you that your daughter got pegnant so when the family is out there for all the world to see, Bristol is holding her baby brother in such a way so to disguise your growing pregnancy.  I’m sure Bristol’s younger sister would have been equally as capable of holding her brother.  No….Sarah was embarrassed and ashamed…..of her daughter.

I do believe that what Levi said as to why Sarah SUDDENLY dropped out of sight is based on what has been going on BEHIND the scenes…..

This fool Levi wants to be in the spotlight. He’ll lie, cheat, or steal to get there. Why would any of you blame a mother for her 17 year old daughter pregnancy? That is absurd. There are 1 million unintented pregancies every year. Do we have that many bad mothers? I don’t think so.
