Liz Smith on Scandal, Misfortune, Misery: Lindsay, Jennifer, Anna Nicole

"Gossip, in its popular and journalistic forms, is the subversive revenge of the resentful over the resented, resulting in the apparently endlessly satisfying proof that celebrities, the wealthy and the titled have lives replete with scandal, misfortune and misery."
So writes Britain’s John Lloyd, about the world’s second-oldest profession.

And so, here we go again! Lindsay Lohan! She was back in the news because of an alleged probation violation stemming from her two-year-old DUI. A warrant was issued for her arrest, but that was quickly quashed. Was the warrant extreme? You bet. But this is L.A., kids, and the police are bigger drama queens than the stars.

And, much as Joan Crawford would speak “confidentially” to Hedda or Louella, Lindsay, upon learning of her offense — and the wildfire Internet blogging about it — immediately text messaged Web emperor Perez Hilton. She complained plaintively that this would “ruin every deal I have now.” It didn’t, we hope. I want this very talented young woman to have her second chance — she’s been through a lot. (Have you seen her parents — Dina and Michael Lohan? Lindsay’s survival is a miracle.)

Jennifer Aniston: Broken up yet again from singer/player John Mayer. Or not. Who knows? (Don’t say, “Who cares?” because millions do — remember the above-mentioned misery factor.) The current Entertainment Weekly magazine duly notes the couple’s first-year anniversary with cautious optimism. I guess that caution was well founded.
I think Aniston is such an appealing person and actor. (And she is on the career upswing with “Marley & Me” and “He’s Just Not That Into You.”)

My one chat with her was a phoner — she was promoting one of the Weinstein Company’s first ventures, the dire and aptly titled “Derailed.” I had been so strenuously warned NOT to ask anything personal, that I was a nervous wreck when the call came through. What kind of a difficult bitch was she? Surprise! She was lovely, relaxed, witty and easy. And I might have gotten much more from her had her PR person not interrupted the call after the allotted 15 minutes!
I like this recent quote from the star, on the subject of perfect partners: “I don’t have one, and I don’t think it exists. Whoever said that every relationship lasts forever? That’s hoping too much … I think every relationship is a world unto itself.” Jennifer is only 40 (25, in 2009 years) so she has plenty of time to find a “world” that lasts.

Anna Nicole Smith: The dead pinup is back in the news with the arrest of her “manager” Howard K. Stern and several of her doctors in the matter of offering, supplying and overprescribing drugs.
I rarely condescend to pity over any celebrity, but Anna Nicole was a special case. She was truly not equipped for “stardom,” or for any normal life, in fact. She was obvious in every way, calculating in every way, clueless in every way. (The scene I witnessed at a Vanity Fair Oscar party — Anna attempting to accost Michael J. Fox, among other antics — was fantastic, grotesque and tragic in capital letters!) Had she not met and married J. Howard Marshall, the initial source of her cash and carry, and encountered the beneficence of Hugh Hefner, who extended her 15 minutes within the pages of Playboy, Anna Nicole was the kind of girl who would have ended up in prison.

I always have a twinge of regret, thinking on Anna. I knew her first PR rep pretty well, back in the day, and as she spiraled out of control I would hear from him, as he tried to spin the story. And I would say, “If she were on her own, it would be sad enough. But she has a child. How do you think that boy is going to turn out?” The rep would say, “Oh, she really loves Danny.” That is not the point, I’d counter. “She is clearly unfit.”

You are my all-time favorite columnist and the only reason I ever bought the NY Post was to read you when you arrived there. When they canned you a few weeks ago I saw no reason to read it anymore, and now I’ve got you on my screen 24/7.

1. Congratulations Liz Smith ! This venue is exciting and offers opportunities to explore and express your creativity in a more intimate setting with millions. The NY Posts lost is our gain! What’s another name for NY Post? LOSERS!
2. Ms. Lohan time is precious, use it wisely! Spend time with yourself away from the publc and cameras to get to truly know yourself psychologically, emotionally and spiritually. Surround yourself with people who truly love you and have your best interest at heart. Too often public figures unfortunately find themselves surrounded by hangers on-persons who love to bathe in fame by association. Persons who are yes people afraid to be honest with you for fear of being dismissed by you. TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE! LOVE DOES NOT HURT!
3. Ms. Aniston, Happy Belated Birthday! You appear to be an intelligent and lovely person. You are deserving of a wonderful life. Do not fear being alone. Wait until you have truly met that special person who loves, respects and treasures you. You do not have to prove anything to anyone! I hope you are truly in a good place and what is seen by the public are not merely photo opts.
4. Anna Nicoles life was tragic. It was sad to watch. The fame seeking greedy cash whores she surrounded herself with played a role in her tragic end.
I’m thrilled to find you here, Liz Smith. You are a classic.
Speaking of classics, I, too, think Lindsay Lohan is a very talented young woman who could become an iconic film star. And I think most of the media has been unbelievably unfair to her, targeting her, in fact. She’s no angel (part of her appeal) but she’s not the demon she’s portrayed as, either. Thanks for again standing up for her, as you did not long ago. I’m a big fan of the classic stars from the past, and she has many of the same qualities they had. Let’s hope the media hatred/hysteria toward her will turn around and she will be allowed to evolve into the actress she was meant to be.
Another great post, Liz. And I do love how you always start out with an apropos quote!
— I think Lindsay is very talented too, BUT I don’t see the media as demonizing her. She brings all the negativity upon herself with her own actions. If she wants to be taken seriously as an actor again, she needs to conquer her drug dependancies and stop acting out like a wasted teenager 24/7. She also needs to take responsibility for herself and stop blaming everyone else around her— It’s not the paparazzi hounding her that is causing these problems because the paps can be avoided. If "Brangelina" can spend weeks at a time in LA with no one knowing about it…then so can C/D Lister Lindsay Lohan. But no, LL goes out every single night looking wasted and stumbling out of club after club…really is it any surprise all of her career opportunities have dried up? Who would hire her? She’s a liability right now, and if she can’t get her stuff together, she’s gonna be the next Tara Reid, and another Hollywood cliche…too sad. She definitely has the ability to do a Britney like turnaround, but she’s gotta clean house like Britney did and have someone fighting 24/7 for her like Britney’s dad, but it ain’t gonna happen with the set of parents she has.
Lohan has been no more "targeted" than Britney Spears — less, in fact. Publicity is gold, for people like Lohan; they’re only in trouble when they spiral out of control (like Spears). If Lohan didn’t like the heat, she’d stay out of the kitchen.
You’re right, she’s neither demon nor angel…just another celebrity, grabbing as much attention as possible.
Liz: I love reading you. I’m going to buy your book. I own an acting school in Vancouver, Canada called Schoolcreative. We have also started teaching magazine writing and plan to expand to other disciplines in the future. You will be in the curriculum. I want our students to study a "class act". As much as I hate elitist ratings…when you are the cream of the crop it is worthy of note.
Thanks for being so fabulous all the time.

I loved "Natural Blonde" at full price and recommend it highly.

Hi Liz Smith-

Ms. Smith:
I, too, read THE NY POST because your column was in it!! First of all, I commend you for still wanting to work and not retiring to some gorgeous resort in FL or the Carribbean! You inspire all of us!
You are by far, the best "gossip" columnist I have ever read, as you are intelligent, interesting and only report on those worthy of our interest. I also like the fact that you are still "into" the JFK assassination and all the books that are written regarding it. I have read every book you have discussed in your column about that event.
I have forwarded this new wOw site to all my friends. I sometimes wonder if we (the readers) knew all the things you DON’T tell about if we could handle it - I’m sure you know many confidences……….thanks for all the reading time you have given me………….Sincerely, A. Crowe
