The Liz Smith Column | 11/20/2009 5:15 am

Liz Smith: Sharon Stone, Steve Tyrell, Sarah (You Know Who), Glamour, Lesley Gore – and More!

Our Gossip Girl’s weekend dish runneth over.

"For the record, I don’t believe Sarah Palin will ever hold national office. She inspires many right-wing activists and enchants some members of the conservative news media, but the independents and moderates decisive to any presidential bid won’t send her to Washington with ‘quitter’ on her resume. Still, she’s likely to remain in the limelight for years to come.

"If that makes you scream, don’t scream at Alaskans. We only made her governor. The nation made her a celebrity."

So wrote Michael Carey of the Anchorage Daily News for the op-ed section of The New York Times.

It’s always best to get very near the horse’s mouth when you are trying to get a down-home scoop. And the following missive is from none other than Sharon Stone, AIDS activist par excellence.

"I read on Page Six in the New York Post (actually, I see it’s on Page 12) that I was sighted in the private room of Steven Knoll Salon getting my hair done, while Queen Noor of Jordan was also having a blow dry with mere mortals attending.

"Of course, at this time I was actually in L.A. with my kids, my folks and getting dinner ready for everybody.

"I knew then I’d be in New York that same week to do the David Letterman Show and to receive the Enduring Vision Award, along with President Bill Clinton and Evelyn and Leonard Lauder and Lily Safra.

"Liz, I do like to prepare in advance, but this was ridiculous."

So thanks to Sharon Stone for writing us the real story.

I raved here about the Glamour magazine awards, but I didn’t know then that I would find myself on a page in the magazine for the December issue.

If you take up this delicious magazine and go to page 86, you’ll see me giving unwanted advice to A-listers like Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Mariah Carey and Madonna.

None of these big stars will read or take my advice, of course. Never mind! I gave it.

What did the neighbors think? We may never know but I do mean VIPs like Tiger Woods, Celine Dion, Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus and former Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga. All of these biggies live or own in The Bear’s Club, a private golf compound where the mansions range from $8 to $15 and $25 million bucks.

The Bear’s Club was one big bear hug recently when the mighty of Palm Beach trekked up to Jupiter, FL, for a party being given for over 200 guests in the home of lumber king Patrick Park.

Palm Beachers hate to "go north" of their pristine environs. But this time they did because most had never seen Patrick’s new mega domain. His house, which sprawls over 25,000 square feet, boasts three Steinway Grand pianos. And there is yet another piano, a famous Bosendorfer from Austria. This one is in Patrick’s own bedroom.

The party was to salute Palm Beach doyenne Dame Celia Lipton Farris on her upcoming honoring by the Palm Beach Historical Society. (This event happens December 9 and is a sit-down dinner at Club Colette.)

2009_1120_liz_celia_lipton_farris.jpg

At the Park party, Celia was floored when her host took her upstairs in a state-of-the-art voice-activated elevator to look at two large paintings she had done many years ago. "How quickly we artists forget!" quipped Celia. She was introduced by Palm Beach mover and shaker Tom Quick and said this to the assembled: "When the Historical Society called to say they wanted to honor me, I asked: ‘How much will this cost me?’ But they were so polite and said, ‘Nothing! You have done so much for Palm Beach, its culture, its architecture, so you deserve it!’"

This is all way beyond The Great Gatsby. F. Scott Fitzgerald could not have imagined the Florida "society" of today.

I must really be out of the loop.  I had no idea Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus are A-listers.

I would love to hear Sandro Albert and his jazz guitar!  What a talent, and he brings other great talent with him.  Background talents on organ, flute, Cuban percussion!  What a treat!

Lesey Gore!  Now there’s a memory!  I believe that every teen age girl in the 60’s and early 70’s who had ever been dumped by a boyfriend could easily sing..

" It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to, Cry if I want to,
Cry if I want to. You would cry too, if it happened to you.

Nobody knows where my Johnny has gone,
But Judy left the same time.
Why was he holdin her hand,
When he’s supposed to be mine?"

Lesley rocks!

Mr. Wow

Indeed, Ms.Gore rocks.  her greatest song was "You Don’t Own Me."    You don’t own me, I’m not just one of your many toys/You don’t own me, don’t say I can’t go with other boys

I’m young and I love to be young

I’m free and I love to be free

To live my life the way I want/to say and do whatever I please

Mr. Wow was wowed by this as a teen.

I’ve been running errands and humming Lesley’s songs.  Thinking about her remarkable beehive.  Mine was never so cool, even with several good rat tail combs.  Anyway, another song popped into my head with a vivid memory attached, although not by the multi talented Ms. Gore.  Back in the day, when a much younger Maggie was feeling her oats and girl power, she also thought " These Boots Are Made For Walking" was written expressly for her sassy self.

What an era for girl music, Mr. Wow!!!

Hooray to Michael! He got it right, no Palin will NEVER occupy the White House….NEVER.  I think she is and will continue to be a lightening rod for those who think as she does. Much like Ann Coulter, she will be someone that unites those who have "fringe" beliefs and attitudes.

She has the presence, personal and unique style that those people love, so I really do believe Palin will be around for years to come. Writing books, giving speeches at fundraisers and speaking engagements, appearing on talk shows, but she will NEVER occupy the White House. On this I would wager all that I own.

Reports surfaced after the 2008 election that millions of Americans voted for Barack Obama - not because they wanted him in office, but because they didn’t want Palin in office….that says something.  He’s Black….no, he’s a Muslim…no, he pals around with terrorists.….but when it came time to vote, they cast their vote for him. That is very telling.

From your lips to God’s ear, Belinda. I scare easily.  And Mrs. Palin is terrifying (to me)  It doesn’t seem possible she’d get near the White House.  But stranger things have happened.  Adam Sandler’s career, for example.

Oooh are you naughty! Poor Adam.  Something tells me he sold his soul for that success. That can be the only reason because I just don’t see the talent.

As for Mrs. Sarah, you and I know why she could never be elected president. To post it here would be a "word bomb" and I don’t want to blow up the thread that way. I can just see the responses…goodness. But because of the reason, I assure you it will NEVER happen.

Belinda….Ooooh are you naughty!  And to think Mr. Wow is headlined here as "the ultimate insider."  I think not.

I don’t think Obama’s vote was legit enough to tell. TOO MUCH acorny voter fraud. Now, I saw that happen by my own eyes—so I do not need to LINK to nada. Also, too much "questionable" donations coming in on-line from Pakistani-mideastern areas.

More on that later, after some investigations going on into counterfeiting. He is/was Muslim.. He attended Indonesian muslim schools. His registration is online. When did he convert to Christianity? I missed that documentation!! Ha ha…

About Liz Smith being mentioned in the Glamour magazine article, I took three books with me to Germany recently to read on the plane and Liz Smith was mentioned in two of them more than once (in a positive manner about what she reported): "Mrs. Astor Regrets" and "Lies my Mother Never Told Me" (by James Jones’ daugther who wrote "From Here to Enternity" and other soldier books). Both are excellent books. But the main point is that Liz is becoming quite the celebrity journalist to quote I’m noticing.

If Dubya can get elected, anyone can get elected. Vigilance!  I have not heard the interview where Bill O Reilly asked Palin why she thought she was smart enough to be president, but thats a very good question. That woman is an attention seeker and nothing more.

I had Leslie Gore albums in my day.  You Don’t Own Me certainly, captured my imagination!

Leslie Gore! Oh, how liberating "You Don’t Own Me" was. It was the first song I think I ever heard that really put the power right in a young woman’s hands, and it felt SOOOO good back in the day. (Not to mention sounding fabulous, since Leslie Gore’s powerful voice was amazing.)

Liz, I hope that at least a couple of those young women to whom you offered advice actually were listening to some words of - I’m sure - wisdom. Heaven knows, the likes of "Young Hollywood" is in desperate need of guidance before some of them implode completely. Keep the lecture going!
