Liz Smith: Was I Too 'Softball' on Bill O'Reilly?

More from Our Gossip Girl: Lindsay and Samantha — obsessively gay? Sarah Palin and her Alaskan ‘Little Foxes’ … and more.

“Cows with names produce 3.4 percent more milk than nameless cows,” writes Harper’s magazine. Hmmm, Harper’s, the publication of agriculture.

I am a big admirer of the gay Village Voice columnist Michael Musto, who never minds calling a pitchfork a pitchfork. He would be a big international byline if he had eschewed being famous with ten percent of the population instead of with all of it.

Here’s one of the funniest things I’ve read lately, direct from La Dolce Musto: “Two prized daughters, Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson, have been carrying on tempestuously lately, what with all the window breaking and screaming fights, followed by the inevitable makeup sessions … Well, a friend of mine swears that this is patented lesbian behavior. She says the obsessive-compulsive thing of getting under your partner’s skin in a way where you can’t live with or without each other is extremely Sapphic.

“Really? So Sean and Robin Wright Penn are lesbians?”

——————————

I love the Huffington Post blogger who says I should not have interviewed Bill O’Reilly in a courteous manner, should not have treated him to a “softball” Q & A. Who sez?

It’s still a free country for journalists to interview people in whatever manner seems fitting. I didn’t think on the eve of the celebration of his 100th-month triumph I needed to drag in the MSNBC feud regarding O’Reilly, nor did I need to dredge up questions about legal battles that were settled out of court.

As I wrote in the interview — I like Bill O’Reilly. I seldom agree with him and he knows that and he doesn’t give a damn. This was just two people talking. Sorry there was no mud wrestling for Arianna’s turf.

Come to think of it, if I had interviewed the blogger’s editor, Arianna, whom I have known since before Hector got a dog license, I wouldn’t have asked her a lot of embarrassing questions either. Every interview doesn’t have to be down and dirty.

Some can. Others it looks like it’s near impossible for them.

I agree. I think knowing that you actually like him makes a difference. Part of what has given gossip such a bad name is the negative tone that it assumes from the onset. That said, I think Bill could hold his own and would love to see you turn the heat up a notch if/when you interview him again - done so in the same respectful manner, of course.

Thanks P. Nahn, I agree! I believe that everyone has something to offer, we may not always agree with certain things regarding them but we at the same time can still respectfully disagree to those things not agreed upon.

I don’t think asking pertinent questions about things he says means a disrespectful interview.  I would have liked to see Liz ask him some of the questions he asks people that he interviews!!!   Liz definitely let him off easy, especially since he was out on an image fixing set of interviews, she feel right into step!!!!

I agreed with everything you wrote today.  I know.  :::THUD:::  Except…The Little Foxes. Please.  Bette Davis and Tallulah Bankhead just rolled.  Palin? Here I go again with All Above Eve quotes (my favorite source,) "You’re too short for that gesture. Besides, it went out with Mrs. Fiske."

Musto is one of those who perpetuate anti-lesbian stereotypes.  Call it self-loathing homophobia, call it trying to sell papers.  I have alot of gay friends, and none of the lesbian couples behave in the way he describes.  In my experience, it is overwhelmingly the straight couples who have drama down to an art form. Keep in mind re: Samantha and Lindsey that Lindsey is a "formerly straight" woman who is no stranger to self-created drama.

Maybe it depends on location. I remember when I lived in Miami, Florida, a lot of the lesbians I knew there loved a good dose of gossip and drama. Of course, it was Miami, and many of them were Cuban or Brazilian or Columbian… the young Latin folk there seem to enjoy fiery dramatic situations ;)

I loved the Sean and Robin Wright zinger!  Bad-dow!!

Lindsay Lohan.  Poor, poor Lindsay.  Nothing is ever her fault.  No, huh uh.  She was raised to be a good person (her quote not mine) and yet—yet everyone is so MEAN to her all the time!!!  For no reason at all, suddenly no one likes her anymore, no one wants to be her friend, she’s not getting any acting offers and she can’t seem to figure out why…..Because I’m sure all the drugs, the erratic behavior, the screaming matches, the tantrums, breaking windows, throwing furniture, the constant drama of always having to be the center of attention — that certainly would have no factor in anything…no huh, uh…

Liz,

Your interview with Liza Minnelli was actually no different than the interview with Bill O’Reilly.   You asked questions; received real answers.  Some heartfelt comments were made by the interviewees,  with Mr. O’Reilly it was about the threats made against him and his need to be concered about the protection of his family;  and with Liza it was her opinion as to entering the marriage state once again.  Both very emotional issues of which you took no advantage and did not draw blood with a zinger of a follow-up question.  Thank you.

Hey me & my kids disagree on Politics & Religion, but I still like them.  Good debating shows that your give a s##### about what is happening in the world no matter what side your on. I take pride in the fact that over the dinner table all those years taught my wonderful liberal children to care and go out and vote.  Ain’t America Grand.
