Liz Smith: Sophia Loren in 'The Best Movie I've Ever Done!'
Also from Our Gossip Girl: Broadway anticipates Catherine Zeta-Jones
and her ‘Night Music,’ and Hilary Swank is flying high as ‘Amelia’ and
weeping over meat.

"I’d rather go to Fat Burger!" was Michael Jackson’s response when his onetime producer, Gary Pudney, told him that they were going to visit the palace in Monaco.
When they arrived at the main room, Michael spotted Prince Rainier’s throne. "Can I sit on that?" he begged Mr. Pudney. "No, you cannot sit on the throne of a Serene Highness," came the answer.
Well, if you take a look at the amazing Architectural Digest for November, you’ll see that Michael got his own throne to sit on. Photos inside are rare and taken some years ago at Neverland by the photographer of photographers, Harry Benson.

Speaking of kings, queens and princes, Henry VIII must be rolling in his grave. It is reported that the Queen of England and her consort, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, have grown increasingly sympathetic to the Roman Catholic Church and are eagerly awaiting the visit of Pope Benedict to Great Britain. He will stay in Buckingham Palace.
Mandrake in the Telegraph reports that the queen’s husband has opened a new wing of the famous Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, the first time any English Royal has done such a thing in over 400 years.
The Duchess of Kent shocked the royal family by converting to Catholicism in 1994, but the rest remained steadfast in the traditions of the Reformation. They say, however, that now the Windsors are "appalled" at certain developments in the Church of England.

Harvey Weinstein, quoted in the November issue of Vogue, says, "I’ve made more than 100 movies, but I’ve never ever made a movie like this!"

He’s talking about the coming movie musical of "Nine." Vogue sent Plum Sykes to be on the set along with Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Judi Dench, Fergie and Sophia Loren. Marion Cotillard was not working that day at the Shepperton Studios in Surrey.
Kidman, Cotillard, Cruz and Hudson appear on the cover of Vogue, photographed by Annie Leibovitz. (Who can say what happened to the other famous ladies – Madames Dench and Loren. Are they too mature for the cover of Vogue?)
Oh well, it’s Miss Loren, an icon-plus-deluxe, who gives the best quote. It is a money-quote, so to speak. She says of "Nine," directed by Rob Marshall: "It’s the best movie I’ve ever done!" This from a woman made a legend by the late Vittorio De Sica.

Madonna is off to London to do more international PR for her greatest hits set, "Celebration." The CD is No. 1 all over Europe, a smash. It’s selling briskly in the U.S., too. (Despite M having done little to promote the album in America – wasted appearances on "Letterman" and "SNL.")
"Celebration" includes a new song titled "Revolver" with lyrics like "My love’s a revolver/my sex is a killer/do you want to die happy?"
Madonna is capable of penning serious, lush, poignant ballads. And perhaps she will again. But with Jesus in her life right now, she ain’t feeling poignant. You go, girl. Line ‘em up and shoot ‘em down.

Tickets are now on sale for the highly anticipated revival of Stephen Sondheim’s classic "A Little Night Music." This is the lush and witty re-vamp of Ingmar Bergman’s famous movie of romantic intrigues, "Smiles of a Summer Night."
The gorgeous movie queen Catherine Zeta-Jones will play actress Desiree Armfeldt, whose stagnant emotions are rejuvenated by a chance encounter with an old lover, now married. And five-time Tony-winning Broadway legend Angela Lansbury appears as Desiree’s mother, Madame Armfeldt, who does not approve of her daughter’s career or love life. Do I see a sixth Tony for Angela?!
Previews at the Walter Kerr Theater begin November 24. "Night Music" opens on December 13, and then we can send in the clowns. Hopefully, with good reviews. Go to NightMusicOnBroadway.com for ticket info.

Is it just me, or is Sophia Loren growing ever more beautiful with age? It is astounding to me how lovely she is - truly flawless. I have to assume that marvelous bone structure is in large measure responsible, and if she HAS had "some work done" it was done perfectly. She is a WOW of a woman.
I’m thrilled, too that A Little Night Music is being revived. It’s always been one of my favorite Sondheim works, and I think Ms. Zeta-Jones will nail it.
Thanks for another great column, Liz. (Do you think you could possibly wangle an invite to the Palace to eavesdrop on the conversation between HRH and the Pope? Now THAT will be quite an event, eh?)
I have to do some cubism…I’m using the Pope as my subject matter. Why the Windsors would trust let alone allow … ??? mind boggling to me, I thought they were much more grounded than that.
I must agree with you Ms. Crawford.
Thank you for an awesome read, Ms. Smith.

I’ve never heard a vegetarian say he/she had to eat meat for health reasons. How very odd, although I suppose she has her reasons.
Hillary Swank in Million Dollar Baby may be one of the best performances on the big screen in this century.
Somehow I doubt the Church of England is any danger of being "returned" to the Roman Catholic Church. Especially since the future king and his queen are both divorced and had an affair that resulted in the divorce. If I were the Windsors, I’d stick with the Church of England.
Sophia Loren is just divine. No other word for her. As is Angela Lansbury. The new kids on the block have a long way to go compared to them.
As for Madonna, interesting that the co-op board in her building is telling her the same thing. Go, girl. Somewhere else. Quietly. Quickly.
You make a good point about the stupid Prince of Wales - he is a self absorbed nitwit and Camilla is just ugly. I blame him mostly for the divorce with Princess Diana. He was the first one to go outside of the marriage and he had a choice earlier in his life to marry Camilla in the first place. I do not feel that either of them should have gone outside of it. He could have been more understanding and up front with Diana how he wanted the marriage to go. You can just look at the early pictures during the engagement where she looked so much in love with him and at 19 had high hopes of success of the marriage. I still hope that they will skip him and go directly to Prince William.
You are also right about Sophie Loren and Angela Lansbury, they are outstanding actresses.
Madonna has a problem with acting her age and aging gracefully. It does not surprise me that she is in trouble with the music and parties. Hopefully she will get a country home with lots of acres so she stops bothering ordinary people who have to work.
Great comments by the way!
Rumor always was that the Queen Mother opposed the marriage on the grounds that Diana had "left the aristocracy" and "become common" and would not be suitable on that basis. Perhaps she knew that Camilla would always be part of the picture. She certainly was part of it and Diana indeed was not suitable. She simply had indeed become "common" and her use of the tabloids to wreak revenge indicated just how "common" she had become.
Rumors persist. We do know Princess Margaret burned many of her mother’s diaries and letters. So we will never really know. The Queen Mother in any case was mindful of the need to present herself in a certain way.
Rumors were she loathed Wallis Simpson despite her own graciousness about it. She apparently resented having been forced into the role she assumed when Edward abdicated. She apparently had intended to live a quiet life in Scotland.
We will never really know. Again Princess Margaret burned so much. In itself a mystery. One can only imagine what went through her mind as she sat in front of a fireplace.

I would tend to agree…Baby Snooks.
I have a right to be critical of the catholic church…
for one, I grew up in it…Know it well…as per my snarky comment above.
I’m also peeing in a bag because a Right that should be taken very seriously…was not taken seriously at all…
….and for states to implement Federal Law prior to it being written as a scare tactic. Is a Human Rights issue, in my opinion.
…Just as a community or group of Doctors deliberately violate a Right to privacy is a women’s issue, and has passed the point of just being a Civil Rights violation to the Violation of Human Rights for any woman who is or was put into this situation by either and both groups.
As an artist…it’s my job to be critical of society…so when my Right to speak gets violated…
As a Human Being when my Right to Privacy is violated and it so affects my life to the point of me not being able to parent and provide for my family, it’s also my Right to get justice. Especially when I know exactly who has and how they have affected my ability to gain health care that was healing. And they are bully’s and crooks.
Because I am not alone or Mrs. Obama would not be as concerned by her own admission and recent speeches regarding her feelings.
