LIZ SMITH FLASH! Vanity Fair's Big Bang

January cover of Vanity Fair/

Brigitte Lacombe

Vanity Fair magazine arrives for January with a big bang and a worthy photographic portfolio by Brigitte Lacombe of Meryl Streep as she rose to the top over the years. A penetrating article by Leslie Bennetts profiles this unusual one-and-only star who is still, at last, and forever, a big box office miracle.

"It’s incredible — I’m 60, and I’m playing the romantic lead in romantic comedies! Bette Davis is rolling over in her grave." So marvels Meryl Streep, the world’s most acclaimed actress with two Oscars, 15 Academy Award nominations and 23 Golden Globe nominations, more than any other actor in the history of these awards, to her name. What’s more, she is credited with pushing "Mamma Mia!" to half-a-billion-dollar grosses and most of her other movies have made money on her name as well.

You will enjoy seeing Meryl in all her Lacombe glory giving "celebrity" a good name for a change.

P.S. The wOw women have another special reason to love Vanity Fair this month. We are showing you the FANFAIR page of the magazine, which features "Bright Young Things" and our own bright young thing is someone we’ve all adopted — Chloe Malle, age 24 — daughter of the late film genius Louis Malle and our very own glamour-puss and excellent award-winning actress Candice Bergen. (Need I remind you that Candy won the Emmy so many times for "Murphy Brown" that she graciously took herself out of the running so someone else could win it!)

Chloe says her idea of who she’d love to have dinner with falls to her mother and father. How many parents have a kid like that? This Brown graduate wants to be a writer and is one, already toiling for the New York Observer.

Chloe is the wOw pride and joy, our bet for the future of America!

Candice Bergen’s greatest legacy obviously is Chloe.

Hooray for Meryl Streep! She’s obviously changed how Hollywood views a mature actress.

I can’t wait to see Meryl’s new movie and yes, HOORAY! for  women of age playing the romantic lead. She has always been one of my favorite actresses and I personally think she is incredibly beautiful.

Chloe is such a beautiful young woman.  Candice must be very proud.  I can hardly wait for my copy of VF to arrive.  Meryl is a wonder.  Everybody loves her & her work.

What more can be said, two woman who make us proud to be a member of the same group.  We need good role models for the youth of America’s young ladies.  Women who show and live a life that is real and prove a dream can come true.

Looking forward to reading my issue of Vanity Fair.  Congratulations to Candice - looks like you have done a great job of parenting.  I also have a 24 year old daughter (high school special education math teacher) and I consider her a"bright young thing". So many of her friends are off doing wonderful things - I see a great future for them and our world.

Mr. Wow
Ah, Miss Streep—-overrated, over-honored and over-retouched. (per the VF cover, anyway!) Still, it IS exciting for a woman of her years to be box-office viable in the biz. However, if Miss Bette Davis is turning in her grave, it is only because Miss Streep speculated on Bette’s afterlife. Miss Davis spun for no one, and wouldn’t consider Streep’s longevity and success a patich on her own career. If Mr. Wow had had his way he would have driven Streep out of town after “Mamma Mia!” But the damn thing was a big hit. All good things, Miss Streep. But…must you continue to act?

Who are you "Mr WOW"? A frustrated actor? You sound awfully bitter. What did Meryl Streep ever do to you? Must you continue to spew snarky drivel?

Meryl Streep - One hell of a woman! We should all be so beautiful, talented, brilliant, and blessed. Is there anything this lady can’t do? Meryl: You go, girl! ——- Chloe Malle certainly sounds like a “bright young thing”. What a wonderful thing for her to say about dinner with Mom and Dad. And Mom (Candice): Congrats - You obviously did a great job raising her. Such accomplishments - a no. 1 career AND a no. 1 daughter. No one will ever wipe that smile off your face, eh?
