Liz Smith: Whoopi's Iconic Persona

Also from Our Gossip Girl: Gossip is good for you, but we knew this; and Michelle Pfeiffer’s secret to looking great.

"Iran today is a revolution in search of its Yeltsin … Without leadership, demonstrators will take to the street only so many times." Charles Krauthammer says they need a Boris Yeltsin, an establishment figure with newly revolutionary credentials and legitimacy calling for the abolition of the old political order.

Kudos to our great wOw queen Whoopi Goldberg who covered herself with glory playing an addiction recovery sponsor in Benjamin Bratt’s A&E drama "The Cleaner." She was described therein as being "like a Nubian queen living in a funky old beach bungalow." Bratt adds, "Talk about an iconic persona. I think over the years people have forgotten what an amazing actor she is!"

And remember, not too many months ago, Whoopi told me that she adores making movies and yearns for good great roles in the future. This is a woman who won the Academy Award for "Ghost." And she is also the woman who righted the boat of "The View" and has put that show on a more even keel.

Gossip redux: Scientists at the University of Michigan are now saying that "social bonding" creates happier, healthier levels of progesterone.

So gossip is good for women. (It’s good for men, too, but naturally they’d go the selective route intimating that only females gossip.)

The university’s research journal says they are "the first to show gossiping and chatting" are good for you. The "first?!" Hmmm, I wrote an entire chapter about how gossip is good for people and this ran as the foreword to my memoir Natural Blonde, published in 2000.

In it I said gossip and talking among ourselves helps us to sort out what we know, what we believe and what we feel morally. Gossip is also one of the last of the egalitarian inexpensive ways to have fun. It doesn’t cost anything and anyone can do it. And also, it makes us feel slightly powerful because gossip and the exchange of news is more exciting, more interesting than just uttering platitudes and talking about the weather. So, I concluded that gossip is the tawdry jewel in the crown of free speech.

Maybe some of you have read the P.D. James novel A Taste for Death, wherein her hero, the detective Dalgliesh, says, "Gossip was like any other commodity in the marketplace. You received it only if you had something of value to give. And he liked the sense of power which gossip gave him. Perhaps it reduced the vast amorphous city to manageable proportions for him."

Reading the international press: They say 183 of the Members of Parliament have been shamed into giving back around $800,000 for the outrageous expenses they have charged to the people of Great Britain. That’s about a third of the MPs who have done the right thing …

"Mary Poppins" has beaten "Harry Potter" to the title of best family film of all time in a survey done by the biscuit company Oreo. Other runners up were "The Wizard of Oz," "Bambi," "E.T.," "Star Wars" and "Grease." (But Harry had his inning; he won for the best scene in a movie, meaning his discovery of the secret platform at King’s Cross Station.)

The Vatican is now making money from King Henry VIII’s adultery with Anne Boleyn. The priceless document that led to his divorce from Catherine of Aragon and his break with Rome has been reproduced in detail by the Vatican and is on sale 500 years after the original was shut away in the archives. The copies cost about $71,000 apiece. They will sell mainly to museums and libraries.

What can we say about Whoopi … I mean in 100 words or less, because we can’t really define her as she doesn’t fit the mold.  She knows it, we know it … and we find ourselves fascinated by - what? - her changing personas perhaps … that not definable "something" that keeps us riveted, listening to what she may say next.  For this woman is not only articulate, but she is opinionated as hell and is not afraid to tell you exactly how she feels.  . and she does it with such "feeling" that we listen to her words, often nodding — but glad we don’t have to debate her if we disagree.  Believe me, the end result wouldn’t be a draw!

Talent, stage presence - while we watch a woman not afraid to be herself.  How does she do it I wonder?  Whoopi never seems to be tired and I often think, to quote a phrase, "I’ll have whatever she’s having!"

Oops — I am over the 100 words.  In fact, if let loose, I think I could write a book on this lady (if she’d only ask!)  Suffice it to say, Whoopi, that you defy definition, you exemplify that complicated twisting of talent and intelligence all rolled into one - and lady, you are one of a kind — and aren’t we glad we know you!!!

Joan, I could not possibly be as eloquent as you on the subject of Whoopi Goldberg. I can write that I watch everything she’s in. And I am an avid watcher of The View mainly because of her. I want to know what Whoopi thinks and I love the way she guides the show back to center. She once gave a tour on The View of her place in Vermont (I think) and it was absolutely incredible. Thank you, Whoopi, just for being! And thank you, Joan, for being the awesome writer that you are.

Murphy, I agree!  Whoopi is one cool lady!  The View has wobbled and almost fallen from my radar with some of the people they’ve brought in to host.  What this lady has is a genuineness that is so refreshing, and an honesty that is not simply out to gain ratings!  her honesty isn’t out to hurt others where some people in the Hollywood mode enjoy the hype no matter the cost to others.

To myself, Whoppie is the "can do" persona in this world. I have loved all her movies and have copies of them. She is respected and straight forward about life. Keep going Whoopie, you inspire.

So the Vatican has found a way to make money by printing copies of a document.  If it digs deep enough, it will have enough documents people would like to have to make a fortune.  Actually, I think it is a great idea as these papers shouldnt be shut up in an exclusive library.  At $71,000 a pop I could probably afford the salutation.

WHOOPI impressed me greatly yesterday with her comments re: Michael Jackson, I admire loyalty and someone who "stands up for what she believes" when so many others just sit there.

Regarding Whoopi as an actress, can you imagine anyone else in any of her roles, color purple/long walk home/sister act/ghost, just to name a few.  Whatever role she plays, she owns, no one else is even imaginable playing the part.  It’s like Bette Davis in "All About Eve", I’ve heard other actresses (ex: Claudette Colbert) were offered the role - but would it be imaginable w/o Bette playing Margo Channing,  NEVER.  I miss Whoopi so much in the movies, of course I also miss good movies.

Whoopi, you are MY girl!!!  You make me proud…

I have always loved Whoopi for her intelligence & candor.  A better actress would be hard to find, as well.  I hope she will do more films.  She "killed" me in The Color Purple.  She knows how to break your heart with something as subtle as a facial expression.

I love Whoopi’s work. She is outspoken and real. Way to go Whoopi.

Just hearing Whoopi’s name makes me smile.  I rarely watch The View… all that screeching is not entertainment; it agitates me.   But when I do, it’s for the Whoopi factor.

I can’t imagine that if Whoopi wants to make movies that she wouldn’t be getting roles???? if she’s not… that’s nuts. I wonder if they see her as to iconic and to much of a character on her own? she should make some independent film that really shows of her skill. do something really out there.

It is nuts, Chrome, and I absolutely believe it. One of the things that happens in film casting is if a part is not written around a particular actor or a particular racial/ethnic ‘type’ then the default thinking is a well-known and probably Caucasian performer. There are plenty of roles that are NOT specific to race or even gender…but African-American, Asian, Latina/o actors are not even thought of unless that description is on paper. Some actors have turned that thinking around and been cast in ‘race neutral’ roles (Whoopi, Queen Latifah are good examples but are still pigeonholed) but think about Salma Hayek, B.D. Wong, tons of other talents who aren’t on the casting director’s list if the character name and description doesn’t put them there.

Toni T…sorry, but other than the Color Purple, all of Whoopie’s other roles were originally written for a white actress. Whoopie has been one of the few black females in Hollywood, who wasn’t limited. I suspect because she fit into no mold, they weren’t able to limit her. But I also think because Whoopie always had a huge white following, there was never a thought that she would not be able to draw a broader audience in any film in which she appeared. She is a pretty smart cookie and fairly pragmatic about the entertainment biz. If she suffers at all, she may suffer from the fact that there are a lack of good roles for women.  She is appearing in that Benjamin Bratt television series this week. It’s on one of the cable networks…

I just loved Whoopi in the "Sister Act" movies. My little girl and I would just laugh and laugh.
