Liz Smith’s ‘New Moon’ Column … The Bare Facts on Levi Johnston – Can Sarah Forgive Him? … And ‘Twilight’ – Bad Enough to Be Good?
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves: ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. You were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some of us. It’s in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
This is from the Nelson Mandela inaugural speech made in 1994.
People like Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Tom Cruise, Sean Combs, Donald Trump, Jon Bon Jovi, Paul McCartney, et al, don’t need this kind of encouragement, but I suppose the rest of us do.

Let’s talk here about Levi Johnston and then, possibly, we can forget about him for 2010. I was amused reading the gay columnist Michael Musto’s interview with Sarah Palin’s almost-son-in-law. Here, Levi displayed uncommon good sense in refusing to discuss the details of his romance with Palin’s daughter, Bristol. He said: "I’m not gonna get into that. That’s too personal."
But Levi got in another shot across the bow of the ex-governor of Alaska, saying he actually voted for her in the last election: "At the time, she was gonna be my mother-in-law, and everything was good. I knew some things but I was gonna marry her daughter. I wouldn’t vote for her again – I’ll tell you that. She puts on a big front. She’s a big backstabber. She said things to me and things behind my back. And the truth really comes out now!"
Now we have seen almost all that Levi has to offer. The Playgirl photos of him escaped onto the Internet and there he is, nude, if not in the mood.
He doesn’t look all that confident after deciding against frontal nudity. So there’s only "backal" nudity.
Levi is an attractive young man. But he comes off with a "dumb-as-a-stump" affect. For those girls who desire an Erica Jong-type zipless you-know-what, that might be appealing. But I fear this is it for Levi.
Perhaps Sarah Palin is sincere in saying she’ll welcome him back into the fold. (It would be better to have him, in the words of LBJ, "pissing out of the tent instead of pissing into the tent!" She does need him to shut up about her. Maybe he’ll go back to Alaska, return to school or get a real job.
But ongoing celebrity? Hmmm, for some wannabes the limelight is a big lemon that can never be made into lemonade.

Well, we wOws are not giddy teenage girls. Yet, I feel it’s our duty to go see the "Twilight" movies, beloved of tween and teen girls worldwide. We have to understand what’s going on.
I confess I wasn’t impressed by the first "Twilight" entry – to the point of not commenting at all. I find the vampire genre really all too predictable and silly in spite of the fact that I was raised on Bela Lugosi’s original "Dracula" and then I actually appeared in the movie "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." (I still get residuals in the amount of a few cents.)
But the current craze is based on the wildly popular books of devout Mormon novelist Stephenie Meyer. Here the tales substitute vampirism for sex – neither is any good for good little girls, no matter how much they want to give up their … necks?

When it comes to Sara Palin and her brood I could care less, her business is hers and mine is mine.
As for Twilight, my kids are nuts for the books and my son and daughter in law need to be put in a padded room. Their license plate is "Twlite", they have posters framed and hanging all over their house, their dogs name is Edward, their in their mid 20’s for God Sakes. I pray when they have kids they grow out of this vampire crap. Because before this series was around it was Bela Lugosi, Buffy, Angel, etc. Then anything Johnny Depp, and the "Dead Dolls" sold at Hot Topics, scary things those dolls, don’t ever want to wake up to a room full of them.
Thank God my daughter likes Unicorns, Wolves, Porcelain Dolls, nothing dark and scary in her collecting, lol
I guess to each their own. I tried to read the books, just couldn’t get into them, they held no interest for me. There more for kids, teens and twenty’s.
Well that’s my view. Good Day All. :)
Liz,
I loved this article and especially the quote by Nelson Mandela, but unless the stars you listed went into their careers with the motivation to "make manifest the glory of God within us…." rather than for personal drive and ego, then I believe they could use this encouragement as much as anyone else. To me it has nothing to do with career and everything to do with understanding the nature of God.
"…nude, if not in the mood." I couldn’t stop laughing over that one. I guess he got kind of a limp reaction from the public.
"Gidget goes jugular" I loved that. I was laughing over that and when I tried to explain to my 16 year old who doesn’t know "Gidget" - it fell flat with him, but I got a kick out of it.
Taylor Lautner goes to one of the local high schools out here and is causing quite a stir among the girls. The guys are bored of it.
When my oldest was still up at FT Lewis in Washington, he said that Robert Pattinson wanted to visit the base and his crew pulled the duty to take him out in a Stryker (vehicle). Eric said he was a really nice guy that wanted to let the guys know how much he appreciated him. Pattinson was scheduled to sign autographs in the PX until 6:00pm, but stayed until 2:00am to make sure anyone who showed and wanted one got one. The guys were impressed he would do that.
Liz thank you!
Yes, we do need to start our day with inspirational words from Nelson Mandela, and inspirational they are….thank you.
Levi Johnston is the perfect barometer to use to determine your level of maturity if you are a woman in my opinion. He is physically attractive, but there is no depth. You are absolutely right Liz, he does have that dumb-as-a-stump air to who he is. And although he has a lot of negative things to say about Sarah Palin, they share in what I recognize is a lack of intellectual curiosity. There is nothing about him that even remotely comes across as a man who "thinks" about life on a grand scale. The meaning of life - why we are here - what others around the world think, feel and are experiencing.
There are women who are attracted to him physically and that is understandable. But if you are a WOW woman, you would have to carefully ask yourself what he would have to offer you? At the risk of insulting my fellow women my age and above who take pride in labeling themselves as Cougars, Levi represents all that I don’t respect about you. Levi is what you lust after and who you lust after is essentially a human sized dildo. Are you getting any conversation, true give and take or simply sex?
Belinda, I’d bet the rent that not one real WoW woman bothered to register to Playgirl.com or troll the Internet for the photos. He’s only 19, and unlike Madonna’s 22-year-old Jesus, not a tall great beauty. Just a kid, dumb and basically average in the looks department. He was supposed to have worked out for weeks to prepare for his exposure. Meh. Change trainers, Levi. And, he pulled back on ultimate exposure. (We have no dildo comparisons, alas) Though I still don’t think any woman over 18 cares. If even that.
Mr. Wow is mature, but childish by nature. Should he ever run into Levi, he will not expect a grand conversation on the meaning of life. Right now, anyway. 20 years hench Mr. Johnston might be quite the philosopher. Mr. Wow will be so sorry to miss that.
Mr. Wow
You never cease to entertain me. Nope, I didn’t troll for the photos, I could care less and ditto on the "Meh".
I am quite certain that Nelson Mandela was not speaking about grown ups that play pretend.
Levi Johnson? Are you kidding me here people…still taking about that child? Only to keep Palin in the crosshairs.
FYI: If adult women are attracted to him, they wouldn’t be expecting conversation…
I’m with you Deniseann, I am disgusted that so many women claim the word Cougar and gladly accept the term. I have a problem with MEN and WOMEN who choose to date younger men. The problem I have is that I can’t understand relationships with those who have a wipe gap in age. What can bind them other then the physical?
I don’t care what anyone says, a 20 year old male has not lived enough, experienced enough in life to truly engage a 50 year old woman. He can pretend to understand the music, history and life of a 50 year old and vice versa, but there comes a time when they have to get out of bed and enter the real world.
