Marlo Thomas Can Still Smell Trader Vic's

Marlo Thomas
Ohhh, Trader Vic’s. I can still smell it. It was the best — rum drinks with gardenias, yummy spareribs, great atmosphere. I didn’t realize how much I miss it.

Trader Vic’s is still around here and there - it’s just not the same old Trader Vic’s and of course in Los Angeles it’s no longer at the Beverly HIlton which as I recall held the distinction of being the only restaurant Queen Elizabeth ever went to after she became Queen Elizabeth. Supposedly Prince Phillip’s fortune cookie read "You will marry a very wealthy woman." Which probably gave Trader Vic’s the additional distinction of being the only public place where Queen Elizabeth broke into hysterical laughter.

On the subject of fortune cookies and Los Angeles restaurants, I miss Madame Wu’s Garden. Best fortune cookies in town!

I suspect she meant THE Trader Vic’s which was the one at the Beverly Hilton which was just special for some reason.

Oh, okay. An Internet search indicates there is still a Trader Vic’s at the Beverly Hilton, although I’m assuming that may not have been the original one there, right?

The original one closed in 2007 and moved to LA Live downtown. They did open a "Trader Vic’s Lounge" poolside at the Beverly Hilton but they only serve appetizers. And the drinks. Only place I know of where you can order a drink for four. Or two if you’re lushes.

I’ve not been to the new Trader Vic’s.  I heard it is just not the same. So in a sense, Trader Vic’s is gone. Along with a lot of other "landmark" restaurants like Scandia and Jimmy’s and of course The Brown Derby.

I remember Trader Vic’s in the basement of the hotel at the corner of K & 16th Streets in Washington, D.C.  Was it the Statler Hotel?  Heavenly food.  Wonderful drinks!  As I recall, it was said to be Richard Nixon’s favorite place to eat out.  It sure was one of mine!

I loved Trader Vic’s, the one in NY - downstairs at the Plaza.  It was fabulous, so much fun.  Great food and too much wonderful alcohol.

I miss it badly.
