Marlo Thomas Recalls Her Favorite Scenes From 'I Love Lucy' and Carol Burnett's 'Gone With the Wind'

Marlo Thomas
Hands down, the one to beat (but eternally unbeatable) is Lucille Ball in her famous candy factory scene. She and Ethel are stuck on the assembly line, with a humorless supervisor checking in on them, and Lucy’s stuffing chocolates in her blouse, in her hat, in her cheeks — anywhere — trying to hide them because the conveyor belt is moving too fast for her.

Close behind Lucy is Carol Burnett’s "Gone with the Wind" send-up from her old CBS variety show. Dripping with fake southern charm, and overacting within an inch of her life, she hilariously channels Scarlett O’Hara, dressed in Tara’s green velvet drapes (complete with the curtain rod!). I could watch these two pieces for the rest of my life, and they’d still make me scream with laughter.

I was never a Carol Burnett fan, but the only I Love Lucy episode  that can make me laugh out loud every time is the "Grape Stomping Episode" in the wine vat.  Truly hysterical and I heard Lucille Ball say that much of it was unscripted & spontaneious, which makes it even funnier.  Hope you don’t mind a man’s input.

Carol Burnetts SHOW stays in my memory.  That was a fun cast and the Gone with the Wind skit is priceless.  Oh, and who can forget (I just did) the wonderful woman with the wild hair, many face lifts and the HA HA HA laugh.  What is her name, anyone???

My brain just kicked in and the name of the funny lady is Phyllis Diller.

I love Lucille Ball´s factory scene. But the one that always cracks me up is the Vitameatavegamin commercial. Classic!

I agree.  The chocolate factory is great but Vitameatavegamin is the best.  Carol Burnett has several, but Gone with the Wind and the Mama’s Family with Tim Conway and the siamese elephants is the best bloopers and all.

The Carol Burnett No-Frills Airline bit makes me laugh out loud every time I see it.  And I think of it every time I get into an airplane seat these days!

An overlooked Lucy episode finds the four (Lucy,Ricky,Ethel & Fred) driving to CA.  Their overnight stay at a run down motel is classic Lucy.  Trying to sleep in hole in the wall with trains flying thru non stop never fails to make me laugh every time.  I can so see this happening to me!

Marlo, that candy-factory scene is legendary. I haven’t seen it since I saw a rerun in the 1970’s, but I’ve never forgotten it. It was beyond hilarious. What an amazing talent Lucille was. Oh, heck, I’ve decided to Google a link to that scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wp3m1vg06Q.

You’ve got that very rare, natural comedic talent, too, Mar. One of the greatest scenes on your That Girl series was the episode in which Donald’s mother discovered his pants in your closet. Your show tended more towards the romantic-comedy side, with great use of word-play and double-entendres. But I was so glad you mixed in some slapstick, too. Remember the episode in which you got your finger stuck in the kitchen sink faucet, and had to use your big toe to rotary-dial the phone? Or the one where you destroyed the Thanksgiving dinner, and your father (Lew Parker) had to be rescued from the fire escape?! Great stuff.

I love the candy one and the one in where she is stomping on grapes. I also love the one in where William Holden guests and she has a cig and burns the end of her fake nose.

Beth, I remember that one. She first noticed Holden’s character in a restaurant, if I recall.

I think one of the funniest tv episodes is That Girl when Don is going to show Ann how to ski, primarily how not to twist her ankles if she falls.  He injures his back and then makes it into the bedroom but can’t decide whether to fall face down or face up. The whole show is hilarious even down to his not being able to swallow his pain pills.  They were both so funny……..I dare anyone to watch it and try not to laugh.

Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett were grand dames.  But, I liked Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser’s Thanksgiving scene where the turkey goes out the window.  Classic!  Carole O’Connor on All in the Family was great too.

Mar, I think we’re streaming now at http://radiotime.com/station/s_27348/WJRW_1340.aspx . I’ve been doing a little late-afternoon news on the new channel, and a ton of newswriting.
