Mary Wells Looks Back at Missing Woodstock

Mary Wells
I was working my head off at the time and the idea of spending a druggy night listening to music no matter how great never occurred to me. After, when I saw the pictures, I didn’t feel I had missed a life-changing event. I guess the fact that so many people on drugs in rain and mud peacefully happy with each other was an unforgettable experience so I am a little sorry I missed it.

While I wasn’t at Woodstock either, I can’t say I regret not being there. At the time it LOOKED like some kind of whole life alternative, but the outcome speaks for itself. There is nothing to regret about not being part of a situation where people were wandering about listening to music and basically stoned out of their minds. They were "getting along" because they had no idea where they were or what they were doing. The tragic death of Michael Jackson and countless others who mistakenly make drugs a marker of function only proves that all drugs are a lie. Life is for the living, not those who always have to see it through "rose colored glasses" in order to "make it work".

Mary - I just started watching that show Mad Men this summer. the first season. I think of you on occassion in relation to the show. Wondering if the show is realistic at all and what your experience was. I really wonder… does the show exaggerate the treatment of women in the workplace at ALL? for drama’s sake? I was born in 1963 so i wasn’t working until the early 70’s. not that i haven’t experienced bias and harrassment. But on mad men… wow. I’ll bet you’ve got a book somewhere. I’ll go google.
