McCain Manager: Perez Hilton Hurt Gay-Marriage Efforts With Miss California Smear

Ex-campaign manager Steve Schmidt also says Katie Couric did nothing wrong in disastrous interview with former VP candidate Sarah Palin.

Perez Hilton should have thought twice about smearing Miss California Carrie Prejean for her stance on gay marriage. That’s what John McCain’s senior campaign strategist, Steve Schmidt, said on the Hugh Hewitt radio show this week.

Matt Lewis at PoliticsDaily points out that Schmidt, who supports gay marriage (think he’s friend with Meghan McCain?), insists the gay celebrity blogger Hilton actually hurt the cause of gay rights, instead of helping it. In fact, Prejean has now become a conservative darling for standing up for her beliefs, even though she thinks it cost her the Miss USA crown.

Schmidt said:

I think it’s counterproductive to the cause of people who are concerned about equality for gays, because many people that are sympathetic to the cause that will be turned off by a closed-minded attitude being directed, as you said, you know, in Miss California’s instance … I think that this is a debate and a subject where intolerance directed towards people who disagree with you doesn’t serve either side’s cause very well over the long term.
Prejean told a California church this week that officials from the Miss California USA pageant urged her to apologize to the gay community for saying she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. But she says she has nothing to be sorry for. "You need to apologize to the gay community. You need to not talk about your faith. This has everything to do with you representing California and saving the brand," Prejean said she was told. "I am excited to share my convictions, my faith and my story."

Schmidt also surprisingly defended Katie Couric for that now-infamous struggling interview with then-vice-presidential-hopeful Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin — yes, the one during which Palin couldn’t seem to name a newspaper that she read:

There was nothing that Katie Couric asked in that interview that was unfair to Gov. Palin,’ Schmidt said. ‘It was not a good interview from the perspective of the McCain campaign, but there were no questions that were asked that were gotcha questions or were unfair questions. It was a devastating interview for Gov. Palin when you look back on it.’

he did set his cause back with his vile comments. carrie p. has nothing to apologize for—there’s something in america called free speech—this so called "political correctness" is ruining our country and taking away our liberties. not everyone thinks the same—nor, should they—the world would be a very boring place if they did

Under stimulated… do you believe for a minute that anyone who believes in gay rights is going to change their minds because of Perez Hilton?! The Right Wing is grasping at this as a way to glue their base together with more negativity, that’s all. The people so appalled by this, were always against gay rights and gay marriage. Nobody else cares about Perez Hilton.

DeBurca…anyone that was considering supporting gay marriage may have changed their mind after his hissy fit attack on her. That is the point. He did not help his cause with anyone OUTSIDE the gay agenda.

Of COURSE he did, dahlings.  I’m calling him THIS MINUTE to tell him to not make such a fuss about the lack of his right to marry!

Some people don’t like to have that so "in their face," or they’ll actually have to TALK about it, my dears.  REALLY, Perez.  We expect so much MORE of you, as a gossip columnist/Miss America judge.

My friend Ms. Dearest, that made me laugh.  As a matter of curiosity, does anyone actually think that question was NOT reviewed by countless Miss America producers?

No one knows who was crowned, but this, my friend, was "good television," wasn’t it?

I said it before and I’ll say it again, Miss California had every right to state her opinion, she probably could have worded it a tad different. She also seemed to think that gays have the right to choose to get married, which is not correct but other than that it is just her opinion. I don’t think that this was why she lost though. I’m also glad that Mr. Schmidt defended Katie Couric, she didn’t do anything wrong from my prospective either, it was Gov. Palin who wasn’t up to the task.

let me get this straight (pun not intended)…

showing outrage at the lack of equal rights hurts the movement?

No Lemon Tea…his hissy fit raging on the web hurt the "movement". That and his vile name calling. There, you straight yet?

I doubt greatly that anyone who was for gay marriage has changed their mind about it because of Perez Hilton! Give me a break!
