Liz Smith: Mel Gibson Says His Wife Is Going to Hell (Video)
Robyn Moore Gibson has filed for divorce from actor/producer husband Mel Gibson; Liz Smith dishes on pre-nup, alleged affairs and verbal mudslinging.
After 27 years of marriage, Robyn Gibson has (finally!) filed for divorce from her husband Mel Gibson. The actor and producer, a devout Catholic, said although he loved wife Robyn very, very much, he knew she was going to hell because she didn’t believe in the same things he did. Isn’t this a scorcher of a divorce? Watch me on Fox News talk about events leading up to the split, the $900 million at stake and more.

This is what he actually said. Someone’s putting words in someone’s mouth. Regardless… shouldn’t call himself "devout" if he’s getting divorced. Goes against the churches teachings, doesn’t it?
“Put it this way. My wife is a saint. She’s a much better person than I am. Honestly. She’s, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And it’s just not fair if she doesn’t make it, she’s better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.”
Thanks for the clarification, Patty.
I’m not a fan of the Catholic Church and am not a Catholic myself, so I don’t know if it goes against the teachings or not. I’m sure there are instances when it is allowed, by special order or something (my mother would say the special order generally comes with a golden handshake, but I’ll let her voice her opinions here!).
I think the thing that has people so riled up about Mel is just that he was so public about his faith. Passion of the Christ was a huge success, and not just with Catholics. My church (I’m a Lutheran) bought out a whole theater three days in a row! It was a moving experience to see the movie, complete with the original languages spoken. The movie was faithful to the Bible accounts of the Crucifixion. And let’s face it, the story about the Crucifixion of Christ does not reflect well on the Jews. It’s in the Bible: this is not an opinion, but a matter of religious record (and please don’t anybody tell me that it’s a story book, for me it is a religious record).
Then, Mr. Mel gets held up by the religious right (a group I do not put myself with, by the way. I don’t agree with many of their opinions) as a genius. BINGO! That insures him instant dislike from many people.
And to add to it, he goes off, gets drunk and starts to slam the Jews (what was that all about!). I never got that part. Mel had said for years that he had a problem with alchohol (for that matter, so has Robin Williams, Bruce Willis, and countless other celebs). For him to go off the wagon so publically, just gave the people who didn’t like him fresh material. The same people who would have said "I hope he gets back into rehab" about his drinking or "I wish his family the best" wrt his divorce, now just attack him as a hypocrit.
On another thread, I wrote that I hope his wife gets as much as she can. She has stood by him for thirty years, from shack in Australia to multi million dollar estates in Malibu. Why shouldn’t she get at least half? That’s California law: it’s a community property state.
Maybe people are thinking "Let he who is sinless throw the first stone" about Mel. Maybe he should have been more low key about his faith (I don’t see people knocking Madonna about her Kabballah or John Travolta about his Scientology). Or maybe they expected Mel would be perfect after he announced his religion. Well, folks, here’s a fact about religions. RELIGIONS ARE MADE UP AND FOR HUMAN PEOPLE. And humans are flawed.
My prayers are with his family. And Liz, please note the above quote from Patty as well. Your comment at the end of the clip was inflammatory.
Instead of attacking Liz….known for her excellence in reporting. Perhaps do a little fact checking of your own first. Just Google
Mel saying wife going to hell and will get plenty of places where he said it live on air and to reporters:
MSNBC reports:
I still don’t see where he said his wife is going to HELL. And Liz did NOT interview Mel Gibson. She took this information from other sources and did not credit them and deliberately misused the content.
I stand by my post. Inflammatory reporting by Liz.
DEAR NANCHEN GO on Mel Gibson on line and type up "wife going to hell"
and it will come up. It’s in the record. He also added after his remark that
she won’t join him in paradise, that she is "a much better person than I am." Do you really believe I just made that up? Wow. Liz Smith
The divorce papers were filed on Good Friday. I wonder if that was done coincidentally or informationally? Anyone who both cheats on his wife and goes around declaring that she is going to hell is asking for trouble.
[I don’t believe you made it up. Gibson is too nutty all on his own.]
Dear Liz: Did you provide any proof in your article? A responsible journalist would do that. (ie "When speaking with X of KXTZ news, Mel Gibson admitted he feels his wife is going to hell."
It was inflamatory and irresponsible. I stand by my post, as well as the post from Patty. You gave no proof in your article. Thank you.
Holy smoke! : ) The chair says so?!!
"In Catholic theology, the Latin phrase ex cathedra, literally meaning "from the chair", refers to a teaching by the pope that is considered to be made with the intention of invoking infallibility." Wikipedia (that other infallible source : )
The chair says so?!! I had one of the biggest fights of my life with my father when I was a child about this issue of the pope’s infallibility. I think I said something to the effect of: "What if they snuck an imposter in there?" And then…? Well! All "you-know-what" broke loose!
Seriously, I am so tired of tired dogma and what it does to people on this planet, causing them such an inordinate amount of pain and suffering, and that would include my father, Mel, and me too, whatever scraps of dogma that may have managed to adhere themselves to my own sinewy side.
Love one another. The GREAT Commandment. Jesus said so.
