Toxic Divorces | 04/17/2009 1:50 pm

Liz Smith: Mel Gibson Says His Wife Is Going to Hell (Video)

Robyn Moore Gibson has filed for divorce from actor/producer husband Mel Gibson; Liz Smith dishes on pre-nup, alleged affairs and verbal mudslinging.

After 27 years of marriage, Robyn Gibson has (finally!) filed for divorce from her husband Mel Gibson. The actor and producer, a devout Catholic, said although he loved wife Robyn very, very much, he knew she was going to hell because she didn’t believe in the same things he did. Isn’t this a scorcher of a divorce? Watch me on Fox News talk about events leading up to the split, the $900 million at stake and more.

Eileen - see The Brothers Karamazov, Chapter 5, "the Grand Inquisitor."  It is not long - you can read it online at http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/etext05/inqus10.txt  - I think Dostoyevsky wrote that whole book just to bring that chapter to light.

I thought you would be interested since you had earlier questioned things like Papal infallibility.  I have always been struck by the Inquisitor’s position: "What do you think you’re doing, coming back here?  You’re gonna mess it all up for the Church!  We have a good thing going here!" And the authority of the Church was so absolute that the masses, even knowing who He was, did nothing as He was led to prison right in front of them.  In the end, the Inquisitor treasures Christ’s kiss, but only secretly.

I really wish people would give Mel Gibson a break. Regardless of Mel’s faith. If he was a perfect human being he would not be getting a divorce. This is the sort of things life throws at us regardles of who we are. Like mel, a lot of celebs have fallen from grace by saying and doing crazy things. I think the people who so critical of Mel are some jewish people who took offence to his remarks; and please don’t start with me about hating jews becasue that’s not ture. He may have said some crazy things, but so are other Celebs who do say the same crazy things about blacks, Asians etc. that includes jewish people who say crazy things about other people too; just because they have not been caught, does not make them sanctimonious. There are times when we all have weak moments where we lost control and do or say crazy things. Does that makes us a horrible human being? No! Also there are celebs and ordinary people out there that are fanatics about their faiths and  who are professing their faith, but they do not necessarily practice what they preach. Pastors and other religious leaders who knows better than Mel are good at that one.

Mel Gibson is not the only profess devout catholic to get a divorce and fall from God’s grace. And for those who are criticizing Mel for being a catholic and getting a divorce; let me remind you that even catholic leaders do fall from God’s grace. So at the end of the day what is it to any of us. His errors in judgment are just a reflection of who we are as human beings and how easy it is for us to self destruct. We all self destruct at some level and some point in our lives. Self destruction is in our nature regardless how well conditioned we are. So does that make Mel Gibson immune to this human weakness? I say quit judging him and let him deal with his problems with whatever dignity he has left.

He is not a devout Catholic, just pretending to be one and he’s doing a lousy job.  As far as Robyn goes she earned at least half of all his money.

Once again I’m confused by so many turning against Mel Gibson. Very little information is available about his private life … Is it really okay for everyone to make judgments about his sanity for goodness sakes based on a drunken episode and the fact that he and his wife are divorcing? Oh, and that he’s Catholic! Even Liz Smith is snarky — first time I’ve seen that. Nope, doesn’t compute. Guess I’ll leave y’all to it though; seems like everyone is having a real good time …

Hey Mr Gibson — Thank you for your extraordinary artistry in such things as Shakespeare (on TV! was great!) and Braveheart, and all the Lethal Weapon movies, gosh really loved you in the Mad Max movies too, Ransom (never will forget the way you said Give Me Back My Son!), and Apocalypto (what a movie!) … Thank you for all those hours and lasting impressions and I sure do hope you’ll just keep on doing more and more …

As a Catholic, I have to say that Mel Gibson is a MORON and not representative of many of us who *aren’t* whacked in the head.

You Go Robyn! You live in California, so you should not settle for a penny less than $450 million girl! You earned it!
