Michelle Obama Teaches Oprah to Share (Photo)
For the first time ever, Oprah has shared the cover of O magazine with another woman.
Oprah Winfrey revealed on her eponymous show on Friday that another famous woman will grace the O magazine cover with her … Who is this woman? She must be important, for Oprah has never shared the cover image with anyone else in the publication’s nine years. Why, the gorgeous gal is none other than glamorous First Lady Michelle Obama!
In the edition, Mrs. Obama opens up to Oprah about being mom-in-chief to Sasha and Malia, decorating tips and feeling "fortunate" for where she wakes up every morning.
An excerpt of the upcoming cover interview is available on Oprah.com.
Oprah: So after the Inauguration, what was your first weekend in the White House like?
Michelle Obama: Well, we still had family here, so it was almost like a wedding. A huge, very complicated wedding. The last visitors didn’t leave until Sunday. And then the first Monday was kind of weird. You know: Now we live here, and Barack is getting up and going to work, and it’s just us. This is our home now.
Oprah: I had heart palpitations coming through the White House gate, recognizing that this really is now your home. It’s the White House, and it’s your home.
Michelle Obama: And it’s a beautiful home. When you go out and come back, especially at night, with all the white lights on — it’s just beautiful. We feel privileged, and we feel a responsibility to make it feel like the people’s house. We have the good fortune of being able to sleep here, but this house belongs to America.
The April issue hits newsstands March 17.

Gee, thanks, Lou….I was in Memphis for a summer art show a good while back…maybe near the Pink Palace? I forget…but I was staying with a friend from high school (Central High in the late fifties….my dad was at St. Mary’s Cathedral for three years…)..she had a shop in the Peabody..maybe "Crescent Moon"…don’t know how long you’ve been there….Part of pledge week for high school sororities was climbing the fence at Graceland to see if you could come back with an Elvis memento before the guard caught ya…..Can you say a hundred years ago? I love Memphis….Central was fabulous then….Beale Street was still just a very dark slum in those days…
I started in at wow after the Charlie Rose interview with the ladies…I had just been given a computer after a ten year absence from cyber anything…It has been, for me, the sun, the moon and the stars…escape from the boondocks of the mind…The recent spite and malice show got my panties in a wad and I got deleted a bunch so I just backed off..sort of a bad case of "post-partisan depression"….but I really missed the buddies.. I’m OK with the guys’ presence…mostly…just don’t have the time or inclination to engage in adult education if it doesn’t have a prayer of making a difference….Not at a cocktail party…not here….I try to grant them the fact that we are wired differently…but I am weary with the old white guys track record…
When I went to the Google page for Campbell, it was pretty overwhelming…The Masks of God is pretty daunting…multi-volume….The hero with a Thousand Faces is probably more accessible…If you can find the videos from The Power of Myth, that was terrific…a long series of hour shows with Bill Moyers….that brought Campbell a lot of attention and "converts"…from the late 80’s-90’s…Lots of study groups formed up after that…And if you are a Moyers fan, you’ll be doubly happy. There is a companion volume to the show if you can’t see the videos.(Amazon? cheap?) Underlying all of Campbell is the Jungian concept of the collective unconscious..This was by first big "Well… DUH….!" moment…
I tend a woodstove all winter…for love, money and absolute necessity….ice storm wasn’t fun with no power for two weeks….Georgia fatwood is a type of piney heartwood that is split and sold as a sort of "designer kindling". I always ask Santa Claus for a bundle or two…It makes fire starting a total joy. In the seventies I was a member of a contemporary quilting group…I think they’re called "art quilts" these days….and we did a series of small quilts "named" for imaginary women…."Georgia Fatwood" was one who captured our collective "figment"….along with Page Turner, Pearl Barleigh, Anita Springwater, Ima Nevasaynevah (we stole that one) Hannah Mia Downes, etc…..My granddaughters have a chum named Georgia and I love that "old" names are coming back into favor….
I live in an orange crate masquerading as a house built in the early 1800’s on a shelf of land down the river bluff on the Ohio between Louisville and Cincinnati…("I can see Indiana from my house!"..A T-shirt waiting to happen…….and, yes, we have a real Sarah Palin in the Palin-Woolfolk family cemetery in our little eight-block town….ooo-o-oo-hhhhh…..) I am happy to hear from you and remember Alice Roosevelt Longworth’s fancy embroidered sofa pillow with the motto…"If you can’t say anything nice about anybody, sit right here next to me…."
Clearly! Any opinions not shared or validated are also wrong and most likely, evil.
Not everybody takes directions from Oprah - I’m sure glad I don’t!
I would be so lucky to have arms like the First Lady. I don’t agree with how the economy is being handled, but I think Michelle Obama is fabulous, and I don’t have any reason to believe differently. Politics go back and forth and I am fine with that and the battles go on. Decisions will be made that I will not agree with, but when is that new in American politics - by either president, the current and former.
Since Michelle Obama became First Lady she has handled herself with grace and dignity. She is no fool and knows the world is watching and that she and her children will be judged unjustly. She certainly knows more than most of us here, just how much harder she will have to work to be understood and accepted for who she is since she is the first African American First Lady.
Didn’t like what was done to Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin on this site, nor would I relish as revenge, doing it to Michelle Obama. Waste of time and of no value. There is no golden rule unless you live it yourself.
Frannie Em,
That’s the most profound statement any of us, anywhere, can ever hear and/or believe. Would that we all heeded it.
Margaret…what names did you call Sarah or him? The LEFT side participants of this forum are FAR from innocent in the name calling. The idderence to me seems to be they think their "names" are truths rather than slams!
Bush has been called every name in the book, as well as his daughters, wife and every member of his family!… are you as judgemental about them?
PS….My family memebers are Dems…I also forgive them for their unkind words becasue they are family and because we love each other we do not take partison slams personally..that does not mean someone out side the family would be as forgiving.
What a nice conversation on this topic. I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s comments. The usual "nasty comments" aren’t here Is there a convention somewhere and they didn’t invite the rest of us? What a nice vacation we’ve had.
My remedy to comments on this website that are turning rather difficult is not to answer the person who is making these comments. I would recommend that when the "strategies for disruption" start up, we don’t respond. IF they have no one responding, what can they do? Write responses to themselves?
Miss Suzanne, the "nasty comments" were out in full force. Several pages worth have been deleted.
In answer to the last two questions, we righteous right wing Christian conservatives do enjoy conversing with ourselves. I remember one trult golden thread where the witticisms about various liberals, quasi liberals, socialists and of course the non-citizen Obama, and congratulations thereon, went on for eight solid pages. Ah, THOSE were the days!
Oh, my, why were you thinking that I was referring to you?
I didn’t use the words "right wing Christian conservatives". And how do you know if I am one or not? I was referring to the people who express themselves in a nasty way, no matter what stance they are taking on this website.
Fortunately, I missed the pages that were deleted and I congratulate the web master for keeping the level of conversation on this website at a civil level. I just can’t comprehend why people must express their views in such negative manners, when they could say the same thing in a appropriate way. I worry that they talk to everyone in lives that way. And is it really working for them?
